I know there is a thing about Pedro sacrifice, and the fact that the rest of family madrigal tries earn the miracle and sorta live up to this sacrifice, remembers me of a Christian mistake that many do.

They tried to earn something that was freely given

They tried to sacrifice themselves ( their time, their freedom, their voices, their emotions, their wellbeing ), when the whole point of his sacrifice is that he died so the others doesn't have to die.

They are sacrificing themselves, or part of themselves, for something that it doesn't need a sacrifice (Luisa doesn't need to be do all the hard work when there is a community who could help to do this, Isabela doesn't need to pretend that she is perfect when everyone is flawed but still has valor, Dolores doesn't need to just listen to everything and everyone when she like the rest has so much to talk about herself, Camilo doesn't need to be everybody but himself when he is unique by himself and are great at helping the he is, Antonio doesn't to feel the pressure to not be "another disappointment " when he is just a kid and having a supernatural gift is something out of his control, and last but no least Mirabel doesn't need to "compensate" not having a gift when that not something that should be shameful about when God gives different gifts that maybe is not obvious supernatural but have the same importance of magical ones)

(Continuing Pepa doesn't need to be happy all the time when in life we have ups and downs, Julieta doesn't need to care about every time everyone when she and others sometimes need to care about they own wellbeing, Bruno doesn't need to take the blame for everything that goes wrong when sometimes there is somethings that can be avoided and other can't be avoided and that is fine.)

They are suffering for something that was made to free them by making this something to live up to and this imprison them, because nothing will be enough to a sacrifice of a live and that is okay because it really isn't needed to but they think it is, Abuela think that is and if wasn't Mirabel (bless her heart) they would living like this for the rest of their lives.

There is somethings about majority of encanto fans that really pick me in the wrong way (besides, of course, how much of incest and paedophilia it really has, that by the way really needs to stop).

How they view the miracle and the gifts

Now before you argue listen first: Isabela's problems never were that she can make flowers, her problems were that people always EXPECTED her te made ONLY them and NEVER be SOMETHING or SOMEONE ELSE (flowers/señorita miss perfecta Isabela), also Luisa problem was not that she is strong is that EVERYONE expects her to carry EVERYTHING all time even when it wasn't needed.

Also before you bring Dolores, Pepa or even Bruno to the argument let me explain each of them:

His gift is not seeing bad things, his gift is seeing the Future and sometimes bad things just happen ( the Priest becoming bald ) and others could be avoided if the people actually tried to act upon it ( the fish lady and her fish that lived little habitat , the "non especial's especial " guy that eats a lot of candies and received a gut, even the house breaking could be avoided if the family worked to build a new foundation before ), my point is he seeing the bad outcomes isn't a bad thing because it means people could prepare to it, but people stayed in the path of the bad outcomes because they doesn't wanted the change the behaviour that leads to it (thing about a parent warning their children to not do something or else it could hurt them, but the children do it anyway and end up hurt). So long story short: the problem wasn't Bruno, it wasn't his visions, it wasn't his gift, but the people and their reaction when confronted by that fact that there is ups and downs in live.

Pepa is a emotional person, even without a cloud you can see her stress and emotional turmoil, her gift is extension of that, people often address her gift like negative and Pepa herself hating it, but I think the people doing are making the same mistake that Alma does in the film: thinking that she is expressing herself through the weather is a bad thing, when at the end of the film when see that Pepa having permission and freedom to let it all go is a good thing, the gift are metaphor to real life problems and when the environment is clearly what her problem is that she is react strongly and is strongly emotional in a family that have to keep things together and by being like that people looked at her and saw a problem. The thing about emotions is that the more you bottles the worse it gets, Can Pepa cause a hurricane? Yes, she can, but she won't unless is highly stressful moment (Her wedding day with the "no cloud allowed in the sky" rule and the whole Bruno disappearing, magic dying, house is breaking, gifts fading situations), so is very unlikely to happen otherwise, and less so if she is allowed to express herself more often or be calmed down without it being in a scold way.

Now about Dolores, it was never showed that she doesn't like to hear or know things, the things that are showed to bothers her being overlooked and never being able to talk (like keeping a Big secret, or just being able to talk informations about others rather than talking about herself or her interests *cough*cough* Mariano* cough*) in fact the only pain she show is the proposal dinner where EVERYBODY'S gifts were out of EVERYBODY'S control, even in Antonio's gift's ceremony although she covers her ears she doesn't looks in pain or highly discomfort. Dolores's problem wasn't listening it was lack of freedom in talking and being heard.

Point: stop acting like their gift were the problem, when their gift is part of them (like a talent or a personality characteristic) and when the movie said that they are not the problem, but the generational trauma and how people expected and reacted about those gifts (or lack of gift) are the problem and they need see and accept themselves to fix things.

You know, after "what else can I do?" and during the confrontation between Mirabel and Alma, Mirabel expressions changes is something is really amazing: she started excited to tell Abuela that she is saving the miracle and helping the family, then shocked (and maybe a bit scared) that Abuela is angry and blaming her for everything that went wrong after her gift ceremony, then there is a moment where Mirabel let it all process, then the realization hit: even with best interests at heart, even with her warning that something wrong, even with her actively seeking for answers and for a solution when no one was, even with her finally seeing the struggles of others family members, even when her RISKED HER LIFE, all Abuela saw was a jealous and envious girl that is PURPOSELY trying to RUIN and HURT HER FAMILY for not getting a gift, and it breaks Mirabel's heart. When she said "I will never be good enough for you, will I? No matter how hard I try", you see how hurt she is about how little Abuela thinks of her, but her voice... Her voice is so resigned like...a part of her already knew about how Abuela thought of her, but with this...there is no way of denial it to herself or brush it off, so she doesn't. Going back to her voice and her expression: she goes to heartbroken and resigned about how Abuela sees her, to realization and determination about how her others family members are hurt and then angry and assertive when Abuela doubts about Bruno's love for the family, and then when is all said and done there is shock that she really did argue with her Abuela and told her that is her fault everything and everyone is falling a part...then it all fell a part.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

ENCANTO IS A MOVIE ABOUT GENERATIONAL TRAUMA AND HOW IT CAN AFFECT YOUR EMOTIONS AND YOURSELF ALONG WITH YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS.

Mirabel saving the Miracle or helping her family members, is not her being "parentified", is her doing what family members should do with each other, which is being there for them.

No one (except maybe the villagers) outcast or excluded Mirabel or Bruno, Bruno left because he though it would be best for everybody, Mirabel had trouble in feeling like doesn't belong because she saw her family members as flawless and thought she couldn't be like them without a gift.

Mirabel and Isabela rocky relationship is as fault of BOTH of them, it seems one sided because the movie is through Mirabel's perspective and we empathise more with her when we see most of the movie through her eyes, but if we focus in some of Mirabel's character flaws we see that Isabela's comments doesn't come from nowhere (Mirabel bumping into people when they were preparing for Antonio's gift's ceremony is an example that the "if you aren't trying so hard, you wouldn't be in the way", although harsh is not completely false neither), both were wrong and from what I heard even health siblings relationships have them fighting 24/7.

Mirabel and Bruno are no Saints in the situation, all of the family Madrigal was unaware of each other's pain until everything was falling apart, even Mirabel herself was more focused on the "Miracle as the magic" instead of the "Miracle as the Family" in some points of the movie (hugging Isabela, anyone?) and because of that all of them were insensitive without intending to.

All of the Family were flawed person but none of them were abusive, or at least maliciously abusive, even good parents can do wrong to their kids, put fear and unsolved grief and trauma into it and you have the madrigal family

A thing that many people misinterpreted about encanto is how the family treat Mirabel:

They think they ( or just Abuela ) abused or neglected her, when actually they only made the mistakes that even non-abusive people do, they say things that are harmful without realising that they hurt in the first place.

Saying things that hurt without intending to, is common mistake that everybody has made not just "abusers or toxic people", actually these kinda people (abusers and toxic people, not good people) tend to, sometimes, want to hurt the person which they are speaking those harmful things (I wrote sometimes, because some really don't realise it, not putting all in a box, because I know the experiences are not same for everybode).

Okay back on track, sometimes we say or ask things to someone, which we think are fine, but sometimes it may trigger some people, if we don't know that we triggered that person and if that person doesn't show or say how harmful it is, we may think it's okay when it's not.

That what's everybody been doing in the family, they say or do things that hurt each other and don't realise it and when they are hurt they hide it and acts like that is fine when is not.

They are a family, and being a family is being in a relationship, and a relationship no matter how healthy it is... it hurt.

We are flawed and so are every and any relationship with flawed people in it, because we say and do harmful things without knowing, we hurt when beloved ones are hurt, and we hurt others by being so focused on our own pain that we don't see others and their pain.

The history of the madrigal family is not a history of a abusive or neglecting family, but a normal flawed family that made the mistake of hiding their pain and it caused pain for who is hidden it ( because the suffering goes on ) and the people around ( because who is hiding it are to focused in keeping the facade to see the other and their pain ).

You remember the first time we see Mirabel's door fading away in Antonio's gift's ceremony, and when it is "showed" again in dos oruguitas? Well, there something I realise while watching it.

The changes of lights in Mirabel after her door fade away

The first time we see it, Mirabel is "all in the dark" showing that even with she being there, Abuela couldn't really see her.

And in dos oruguitas, there is still a light in there, showing that, after the confrontation with Mirabel and the house falling apart, Abuela can finally see Mirabel for who she is, instead of who she fear Mirabel is ( someone who did something wrong and harmful to the Miracle and to the family ).

There a difference between hearing someone and listening to someone, so also exist a difference between looking a someone and seeing someone. And that is the difference, after her gift's ceremony Abuela sometimes looked at Mirabel, but she never really saw Mirabel, and it costed an argument and the house falling to put things in perspective to her finally seeing her mistakes and family instead of the facade or the Miracle and the gifts.

In a way even Antonio was already suffering from generational trauma:

He felt the pressure to not be like the two black sheeps of the family, which means he has to get a gift so can be valuable and useful as the rest of the family, and this gift has to be seen in a good light by the villagers so that he wouldn't be seen as "harmful to others".

Antonio was too young to have a pressure specifically for his gift, but he had pressure, because he is the Madrigal that comes after the giftless one, and and after the ostracized one left. Kids are smart and they pick things that are not obvious, and some that are, but nobody says it out loud: he grew up as the roommate with Mirabel, (that have a kid heart, big courage and is gifted [pun intended] in many talents (sewing,crafting,singing,dancing), but is seen like she doesn't have nothing to contribute) and maybe heard "storys" of Bruno when he asked why they didn't talk about Bruno, so he has an idea about what would happen if people don't like the results of his gift's ceremony.

Antonio has the pressure to not let others down or to not cause stress, disappointment or harm to the family and the miracle.

The Madrigal Miracle is a God blessing in the universe of encanto, but still people appeared to not understand it:

In-universe Abuela and the madrigals tried to earn it, when it was not reward or a payment you have to work for, but a Gift was freely given to

Outside of the movie, people see it as a curse or the reason of the family's pain, when it is already commented that the reason of such pain is unrealistic expectations, repressed grief and feelings, miscommunication, and of course generational trauma

The problem is not that the house is alive, there is a magical candle, or most of the got powers, it is the expectations, the pressure, the loneliness, the "unspoken invisible pain" that none had dared to see and say it until the movie.

You know, Isabela's realization in "what else can I do ?" about her powers is also a realization about her as person:

People always thought that she can only grown pretty flowers, so in their minds she can only be the "perfect pretty flower girl of town" (señorita miss perfecta Isabela).

They couldn't picture her doing SOMETHING else AND they also couldn't picture her being SOMEONE else.

Isabela is too afraid of disappoint and to not live up/ try to live up of people's expectations, so she never tried to be someone different or do something new. So when it happened she was surprise and in chock, but also happy and fascinated by it.

"What else can I do?" is her moment of, not only wanting to be someone else or do something else, but to actively being and doing those things without caring about others opinions. It is a moment caused by the cactus because although "is not symmetrical or perfect", it is beautiful and it is HER.

The cactus represent that even although nobody could see her doing or being more, she can, even if she didn't know that.

If she can make more than flowers, so why can't be more than a pretty face? The answer is in the movie she always had the potential, but she and others couldn't see it until that was everything wasn't fine and was far from perfect.

There is a potential in you to be greater even when the others don't see it, or you don't know it. So don't let other people limit you, your dreams or how far you'll go and what else can you do (unless it is a law, so you may want to check what your going to do ).

The idea of Mirabel having an accordion is an idea that I sad that is it was cut out of the movie:

Mirabel in the movie is someone that we can SEE her talents (embroidery, crafting, sewing, singing,dancing, "parkour", good with kids, empathy, compassion, strong will), but no one never said it out loud, instead people in the movie SAW her for something that she doesn't have (a gift).

There is so many qualities and talents in Mirabel, but because people is so focused in the "extraordinary" gifts and the " spectacular" Miracle, that they overlook and, sometimes, take for granted the "ordinary" gifts(like Mirabel's talent) and the "common" Miracle (they all get to live enough to establish a family and build a community).

Just because it isn't out of "common", it doesn't mean that is bad, or worthless, or less valuable. Everybody gets a light, and just because yours is harder to see, it doesn't mean it isn't there: your morals, your talents, YOU. All of it is important, even if people don't appreciate or if you can't see that.

She having an accordion and carrying it everywhere, for me it would show that she always carried a potential and a talent, even with people overlooking it, it doesn't mean that the accordion and her ability with it would dissapaer.

Just because people doesn't value you, it doesn't mean you are not valuable. Your worth isn't tied with people's opinions of you.

Thinking about Tim accidently adopting Maps the same way Bruce adopted him-

Like Maps showing up to save Tim's ass, because he's losing in a fight (that he should definitely be winning but "fOr sOmE rEaSoN" isn't).
