 The Milky Way blazes a spectacular trail of color over Sand Dune Arch in Utah’s Arches National Park. The park is home to more than 2,000 of these stunning formations—the largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world.

Tonle Sap, Cambodia

A baby naps in a rowboat on the Tonle Sap in Cambodia. The lake supports a massive freshwater ecosystem, which in turn supports the people who live around it in floating villages. Many of the Cambodian villagers are ethnic Vietnamese who lost citizenship—and land ownership rights—during the Khmer Rouge takeover in the mid-1970s.

Pharaoh eagle-owl

From its preferred nesting environment—a scrape constructed within a rocky cliff or outcrop—this pharaoh eagle-owl scans the terrain. Its bright yellow eyes are characteristic of the species. The birds are generally found in arid habitats of North Africa and the Middle East and are efficient nocturnal predators—even scorpions are on its menu.

Thor’s Well, Oregon, USA

Seawater pours into the gaping maw of Thor’s Well in this photo submitted by Gary Fua. Located in Oregon near Cape Perpetua, the dangerous but beautiful hole, also known as Spouting Horn, is estimated to be about 20 feet deep.

Performers in Taiwan dance in parades to scare off evil spirits in a tradition called ‘ba jia jiang’. They paint their face as a minor deities and once in character they remain serious because they are supposed to channel that particular deity. Even a smile would be considered offensive to the gods.
