Would you like to publicly show your thanks to Robert Downey Jr. for his portrayal of Tony Stark? Would you like to be included in an ad that will be seen by industry professionals in one of their most prestigious magazines? Then this is the project for you!

Robert Downey Jr has done something spectacular with Tony Stark for the past eleven years. He has created a character that has felt like a real person to many of us, has maintained a powerhouse performance in every film he’s appeared in, whether he’s helming a PTSD-filled drama in Iron Man 3, or providing a backbone of support in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Robert has carried these films, has been an important presence even in those he doesn’t appear in physically, and now is the time to tell him how much we appreciate him.

Oscar season is right around the corner, and the murmurs about Robert deserving an Oscar for Avengers: Endgame are getting louder and louder. @whimsicalethnographies and I came up with the idea of placing an ad in the Hollywood Reporter, which would double as a ‘thank you’ from all of the fans and a pseudo ‘for your consideration’ ad for his Oscar-worthy performance.

Obviously, we will attempt to go for the full page, color ad, so Robert and others can see our devotion in as big a creation as we can manage. So the $6k goal is the maximum we are going for. But this all depends on how far we can get the word out. So tell your friends, tell everyone that replied to that original post—the journey has begun! Our goal is to get this done by the beginning of November, so we can get the ad into the last issue of the Hollywood Reporter on December 11th. The images in the ad will be curated by @spidey-art but we still may reach out to others to help with design in terms of placement and outline. If we do happen to go over the 6k goal, in the best case scenario, we will give the extra money to a charity close to Robert’s heart.

I feel like this is WHY he took Peter’s suit away. Tony got so dependent on them that he had started driving everyone away, he didn’t cope with his trauma, and he’d pretty much stopped existing for anything except Iron Man. He reached that point, and he was terrified that Peter would too. And Peter started out with so much more than Tony did; Aunt May, Ned, MJ, Liz, etc. But when Tony came back from Afghanistan, he really only had Pepper and Obadiah. Rhodey was pissed bc he had stopped selling weapons and wasn’t really there and Obadiah later betrayed him. And then when he only had Pepper and Rhodey, he nearly lost both of them (both emotionally and literally bc they both almost died). So Tony doesn’t want Peter to isolate himself to become Spider Man like Tony had because Peter has so much more to lose. He can’t see him make the same mistake Tony did.

But Peter didn’t see that. He didn’t know how much Tony lost himself and he didn’t know how much Tony is trying to change. So with the line “And I wanted you to be better” they’re on different wavelengths. Peter is comparing the friendly neighborhood Spider Man to feats like New York. Tony is comparing his coping skills to Peter’s. Tony wasn’t saying that Peter had to be a better superhero than him or that he had to save the world a couple times to be good enough for Tony; Tony just wants Peter to be able to exist without being a superhero. He wants to know that Peter won’t lose himself like Tony did and won’t lose peace like Steve did. Tony just wants Peter to be able to go home and not suffer for it.
