Intergalactic Donuts (Kate & Wanda) 1 November 2015
âHitch hike?â Â Wanda looked up from her phone and turned it off. Â She wasnât going to be able to connect to any of the local networks and didnât have the technological know-how to hack into the phone. Â If she was just a little more confident with her powers, she might have been able to change the probability of guessing the right password, but doing that would run the risk of destroying the device entirely. Â Unlike most scientific phenomena like heat, energy, and momentum, Wanda found she couldnât control technology. Â Perhaps some day if she understood what it was she was trying to do, but that was a long time off if she ever decided it was worth while. Â
She opened the box Kate was carrying. Â They were lost on a planet without phones, but that was hardly a reason to let her coffee get cold and donuts go to waste in the meantime. Â She selected one that looked like it should have a filling, hoping for either cream or jam. Â The thick pastry gave way to a more savory cream or gravy and some kind of meat, more similar to a bun than a donut in all but looks. Â It was still better than the time she was in Russia and hoped her pastry would be full of something sweet to find it was full of cabbage. Â She chewed the odd bun and washed the bite down with a sip of coffee. Â
âThereâs an idea.â Â Wanda considered that for a moment. Â They were stuck here until someone else came to retrieve them if they did nothing. Â Sooner or later, someone would notice and come backâthat was a given. Â Even tipsy as they were, even if they forgot for the moment, they would realize their mistake in a couple of hours and return. Â On the flip side, that involved waiting, and there were two significant benefits of finding someone else to bring them home. Â Firstly, it would be interesting to talk to someone from this planet who was as wayward a character as the people in the circles in which Wanda usually ran. Â To have interplanetary travel would necessitate being an other-worldly Tony Stark or Carol Danvers, or something of the sort. Â Secondly, and this is what sold her on the idea; if they were going to wait for a rescue, they would go straight home. Â If they hitch-hiked, then the two of them might get to see more of the near galaxy. Â She polished off her sweet and savory donut as she mused the possibilities. Â âI think Iâd be up for finding a ride.â Â
The hitchhiking thing was just a random thought, and she wasnât sure if Wanda would be the peron to go with it. Kate didnât even know if she, herself, was really okay with it. At this point, what other option did they have, aside from waiting? Â Kate had less doubts with catching a free, intergalactic space ride with strangers than depending on her own drunken friends and acquaintances to come back with them--which might have been weird.Â
What really counted was that Wanda thought it was a good idea. Wanda munched away at the pastry and coffee while she took a bite out of her own donut, the flavor of it like a blast in her mouth. Her nose crinkled; for some reason she wasnât very fond of the edging tartness. Regardless, she took another bite and swallowed before she spoke again.
âRideâs good. Thatâs good,â she confirmed, going then for the coffee. Wanda no doubt knew tons more people than her, had more connections. The highlight of it was that they had a chance of going home quicker than they originally anticipated. Kate bit gently on the donut to hold it as she closed the lid of the box properly. âHave anyone specific in mind? Or are we just winging it? With whoeverâs here.â
