Homecoming (Wanda & Vision) 5 August 2017
Shell of a Man |Wanda & Tony & Vision| 20 January 2016
thefuturistknows:
Stark ripped a piece of Wanda’s cloak, wrapped and knotted the strip around her injured leg to stop the bleeding, at least momentarily. He noticed that the fabric got soaked fairly quickly, just in the time it took him to access the emergency medical pack in his armor. In specific spots in the arm, leg, and chest piece of the suit, there were syringes always poised to inject him with sanctioned local anesthetics or adrenaline, all to push him through harsh battle conditions. They also came in handy in situations such as this.
Stark administered a dose of anesthetic to Wanda’s leg before he dropped the syringe and cupped one of her cheeks with the palm of his hand, to feel her temperature. She was cold, pale, noticeably disoriented, at least partially due to blood loss, he figured. He scooped her up and carried her to the Quinjet, once the JARVIS-piloted aircraft had landed close enough for that to be seamlessly managed.
After helping Wanda to a gurney, he stepped out of his suit and had the thing reassemble itself and fly off to fetch Vision – what was left of him. Wanda was still clutching the robot heart.
“Little Red Riding Hood, don’t sleep on me yet, all right?” Tony spared her a warning glance over his shoulder before focusing back on the medical supply compartment he was meaning to access. “I get bored on long flights and would really appreciate the company.”
Not a lot of truth there, of course – Stark did enjoy long flights, music could be an entertaining companion, and he’d much rather see his team mates rest immediately after battle, for his own peace of mind. He was worried about the state of Wanda’s head, though, that was why he didn’t want her to sleep. They would be flying directly to a medical center.
He was able to replace the bloody fabric from before with gauze bandages, for whatever that was worth. He helped clean the wound as best as he could. On-site stitching was actually out of the question, given how much flesh was missing. She would probably need skin grafts. Permanent nerve damage was definitely a possibility.
“What do you think about cars?” Tony asked as he retested the light he would use to check – for the third time so far, he might be exaggerating – the reactivity of Wanda’s pupils. “Because I want to give you one. Or, you know. Five.”
Stark pulled his bench closer to the gurney again, and leaned closer to Wanda. He placed a hand against the back of her head for support and stability while he flashed the light in front of her eyes again.
“One to make up for the leg. One to make up for Vision. One to make up for my poor planning.”
He swallowed.
Pupils were reactive. Stark tried to smile at Wanda as he tossed the flashlight back into the open case on top of the small rolling table set up next to him.
“One as a thank you for saving both our asses.”
Stark looked over his shoulder to watch the arrival of his armor and Vision’s shell. Then he directed his gaze downward, briefly, and finally back to Wanda.
“Last one is just because I like you. What do you think?” Another attempted smile. “Are you okay?”
Wanda’s head spun. She could hardly tell anymore why--it could have been any combination of blood loss, personal grieving, physical pain, fear, anxiety or shame. It may, perhaps, have also been the simple fact that Tony had tipped her over to carry her, and as Wanda’s head lolled from one side to the other, she caught glimpses of relevant and foreign objects from all manner of angles. Perhaps all the control Wanda could muster had gone to her clenched jaw and hands, because everything else about her person hung loosely and seemed to rebel against her.
Then, as if she had fallen backwards in slow motion and landed on solid ground, with a finality like having sailed choppy waters and come to land Wanda lay back and stared at the wall. Her eyes didn’t want to move. There seemed simply too much to process. She couldn’t think and block out the contemplation of her pain and move about and make herself useful, so she lay still and let her mind race. Vision had nearly killed her. Vision had nearly killed both of them. Vision had set up a purposeful and intentional trap to kill the both of her and Tony, and had waited there to execute the trap. He hadn’t simply been content to let them die, he had been, in fact, the one to oversee and perhaps plan the ordeal himself. He’d nearly, very nearly, put her head through a rock--he had it in him to kill her with his bare hands.
The thought made her feel ill, so she stopped down that line of thought and closed her eyes. Perhaps she could simply think of nothing at all. She could wake up and this would all be over, perhaps even miraculously fixed.
“Little Red Riding Hood, don’t sleep on me yet, all right?” Wanda opened her eyes obediently, showing that she hadn’t fallen asleep. “I get bored on long flights and would really appreciate the company.”
Wanda nodded, then felt the stripping of her makeshift bandage. She gripped the CPU tighter, and felt a dampness over her lip where her ragged breath hit. From one cracked eye she saw the scrap of red--red from dye and almost brown from gashes and clots of blood. The flesh underneath, itself, was less red than that cloth. Wanda only half listened as he pressed gauze in place and cleaned the worst of it. It was something, at least, to bring her thoughts out of her head, to let her rest for a little while.
“Last one is just because I like you. What do you think? Are you okay?”
Wanda blinked. His hands were still, her leg felt...quite a bit better. Her hands still shook, but whatever he’d shot into her leg had allowed her jaw to relax considerably. She licked her lips and turned her head to look at him. “Five cars? Do I get to pick? There’s a navy Mustang I may have my heart set on.” She closed her eyes and breathed more deeply than she’d been able in what felt like the better part of an hour. She allowed her brain to go hazy like she did before easing her way into sleep.
The Soul Reason (Wanda & Billy) 20 September 2016
deityintraining:
“Wanda,” Billy repeated, letting it register for a moment. He had been, first and foremost, a fan of superheroes, long before he’d developed his own powers. A temporal anomaly, the name Wanda… a light went on, and his soft smile turned into a grin, though he tried to keep himself from being too enthusiastic. Now really, really wasn’t the time. “Wanda Maximoff, right? As in, the Scarlet Witch?” he offered out his hand, still fairly confident as to her whereabouts. Soon, he’d have to deactivate the spell - it did no good to sap himself entirely of energy in a foreign place. “Sorry, that was rude, I didn’t even introduce myself properly-” he added a little sheepishly. “I am… Doctor Strange’s apprentice. My name is Billy Kaplan. I used to think I was just a mutant with lightning powers, but…. it turns out… you and I have some similarities,” he admitted. There was no reason to hide it from her, right? He had no reason not to trust her. It seemed the world had it in its mind for him to encounter the Maximoffs one by one, the first one having been Lorna. But he had to admit, having someone he’d looked up to once offer to help him made him feel relieved, and even a little comfortable. Even if Xavier’s didn’t have the help he needed, it was a step somewhere - in a direction, if not the right one. He could no longer stand still.
“The Scarlet Witch, yes, that’s right,” Wanda replied. She backtracked a step to take Billy’s hand. “Although,” she added, then paused, not quite sure how to address the accident that had taken place. Everyone seemed to have it on the forefront of their mind when they met her, and wanted some sort of nod to the fact--whether it be an admission of guilt or a stance of pride in her power and willingness to help. She herself didn’t know which she preferred these days, which of the two felt more accurate.
She quieted, quelling the impulse to bring this up. Since arriving at the Xavier Institute, it had seemed like less of an issue. If people gave her the cold shoulder, Wanda could be confident it was because of her blood line--scorn for something she couldn’t help was always better than scorn for something she could, for it was undeserved. So, rather, Wanda pumped their hand, then clasped her left over Billy’s right. “Powers like mine and training from Dr. Strange. I’ll make sure to keep an eye on your career, Billy.”
When she spoke his name, then, for such a short moment she could have missed it, she felt some warmth. It wasn’t a physical warmth, but that didn’t make it any less real. There seemed to be something between them when she spoke his name. It felt, altogether like when she spoke Pietro’s name, or when he gave her a hug. Yet, it felt different, too, almost one-sided. However, such a sensation didn’t make sense. The two of them had never met before, except in passing. Such a feeling must only have been conjured from the sheer loneliness she’d been feeling since she’d taken to sleeping alone and in her brother’s absence.
“Shall we?” she asked. Wanda let go with her right hand, and took his hand with her left. “I haven’t been here long, but I think the two of us should be able to find him faster than either of us alone.”
I Come In Peace! | Open
samalexander-nova:
“I go by Nova, my name is Sam.” Part of him wanted to keep his identity a secret, but he had his registration confirmation letter stuffed in his back pocket. He was now part of a database where potentially anyone could hack in and steal his information anyway…not that it was a huge concern for him, but it was still one of his fears. Superheroes in general had a ton of enemies.
He squinted for a moment and then he realised who exactly he was speaking to. “Wait…you’re Scarlet Witch!” He excitedly said. “Oh man. I can’t believe I’m talking to a real Avenger!” If he was allowed to tell his friends at home about his secret identity, he would totally be telling them about this. They would totally flip out.
Clearing his throat, he lowered his hands and stepped forward. “I wanted to offer my help to you guys. And I just want to say…I know a lot of people blame you for what happened with the flying dude, but you were just trying to help. It’s not your fault people got hurt…” He frowned. “But I guess you don’t need to hear that from a kid like me, huh.”
Wanda let her hand swing down by her side, and sighed. So, then, he was a well-wisher. There were few enough of them these days that Wanda didn’t want to scare or chase him off. Besides, he was a child. Children always wanted to make things better with simple solutions. Hadn’t she been the same way not long ago? His well-wishing was about as optimistic as her desire to strike a winged horseman from the sky. Goodness.
Wanda nodded. “Thank you, Sam.”
Then she paused. There was something else, of course. He hadn’t come to tell her that she didn’t deserve the blame. He was a fanboy, but he had been surprised to see her. Wanda wondered if he would have been as surprised to see any of the other Avengers in the Avengers Headquarters. Perhaps he’d have been excited to meet any one, or perhaps she was simply the most controversial right now.
“Now, is there anything I can do for you? You must have come for something, not just in peace.”

deityintraining:
Billy Kaplan had come to the end of his rope. It seemed that every single avenue he explored was a dead end, and things still didn’t feel right. He was convinced, by now, that it was not a lack of acceptance of his blindness - this was something deeper. And even with the vast libraries available to him in the Sanctum Sanctorum, there was only so much he could do alone. This perpetual cloud surrounding him had become more palpable - was it the fact that his magic was growing, too, or something else? Still, he had not explored all his options, and he had found ways to make his life easier as he continued his research. For example, he was currently operating a spell that allowed him to mentally visualize shapes around him, making it infinitely easier to navigate. It was nothing like a lack of visual impair, but in blacks and grays, he could make out shapes, for a short period of time. It took a good deal of magic. Still, in an unfamiliar area such as he was, it came in handy. He had teleported to the gates of Xavier’s School, walking up the pathway. He noted a good deal of movement on the lawn, and a temporal anomaly ahead of him that disappeared as soon as it began. His nerves beat in his throat, but he steeled his resolve. Perhaps, he had reasoned, if something was going on in his mind, Professor X would be the one to help. But as he approached the building, it was not Charles Xavier that he encountered. There was a woman seated on the porch, and his own auras confirmed that she was the source of the temporal anomaly. Her shape, as odd as it was to say, was familiar to him, but he didn’t want to assume. He drew his jacket closer, stepping through the altered terrain until he was near enough to speak. “Sorry to interrupt your morning coffee,” he began, attempting to sound relatively confident. He looked at her with sightless eyes, offering a sheepish smile. He could smell her hot beverage - he had learned to focus on his other senses. Perhaps it had been… good for him, if only in that way. “I was looking for Professor Xavier… I had a few questions for him. Do you… know where I might be able to find him?”
Wanda looked up when she noticed that the young person was coming towards her. One of the students? No, his demeanor and then his question stated otherwise. Yet she was sure she knew his face. If not from the school, then where? It would come to her.
“I have not seen him today,” she replied, and jogged her mind to come up with an idea of where he might be. She was only days into her own stay and knew nobody’s routine well. “He might be teaching...but he might also be in his study,” she guessed, though the guess was little, if any, better than Billy could have done. Immediately, though, she realized her one advantage; having stayed a few days at the Xavier School, Wanda knew the building well enough to help him look. “Would you like help looking for him?”
Wanda drained her drink and pushed herself out of the chair. The young man wasn’t tall--almost as tall as she was in high heels. She guessed his age at about half of hers, though the odd detail here or there read slightly older. The she remembered where she had seen him before. “You’re Dr. Strange’s boy, aren’t you? I’ve been to the Sanctum few times on business, though I don’t believe we’ve been properly introduced. My name is Wanda.” Here, of all places, one didn’t need an alias--everyone had one, and they were all equals.
Shell of a Man |Wanda & Tony & Vision| 20 January 2016
thefuturistknows:
Vision phased through the ground and emerged behind Wanda.
(This was exactly how Tony had almost lost Rhodey: from a distance. In a dangerous mission that probably shouldn’t have happened the way it did.)
Stark dove toward the pair, this had happened too fast for him to even cry out to warn her – and then he suddenly stopped halfway.
Sudden displays of magic were still enough to stagger and disorient him. This time, Wanda’s was especially potent. Vision’s body was ensnared in tendrils of red, Tony could hear Wanda from where he was in the air, and it was not just due to the armor enhancing his senses. Her voice was really carrying.
“Sir, Ms. Maximoff—”
Stark interrupted JARVIS with a “Hey!” to stop him from talking as his cameras zoomed into the scene. JARVIS had been instructed to keep track of the external manifestations of Wanda’s behavioral patterns, because Tony feared what emotional instability could mean if coupled with the destructive potential of her powers. This was, of course, a protocol whose existence he had never shared with anybody. JARVIS had just registered that Wanda had passed the first of the risk thresholds he’d established. There were eight of them in total, and according to JARVIS’ projections, anything above five meant significant unintentional danger to anyone around the Scarlet Witch.
“She’s got him,” Tony said, levelly. Quietly. Mostly to himself, and to the man-made voice in his head. “Any civilians in a five-mile radius?”
“No, sir.”
“We stand by and let her do it.”
This was one of those silent battle theater calls that no one would ever learn about, though it would still carry over into his dreams.
Vision’s body was suddenly limp, and JARVIS confirmed what Tony had already learned by witnessing Wanda practically rip Vision’s head apart: the android was down.
Stark landed not far from where Wanda sat, then covered the distance with heavy armored steps. His helmet retracted into the suit, though, because he figured that seeing a human face would be more grounding to Wanda than the alternative. JARVIS’ preliminary scans had already estimated her physical damage.
“I loved you,” she wept.
Tony swallowed, and his bottom lip twitched once. He reminded himself that Vision had been lethally dangerous, and he had to be brought down. All emotional damage aside, it had to happen.
“Hey, now, Red Priestess. We can drop the tragic past tense.”
He fell on one knee next to Wanda, tilting his head to get a clearer look at her tear-stained face.
“Hank will fix this. It’s all right. You did good.”
Tony’s eyes flicked briefly to the mechanical brain Wanda was clutching in her hands, and then back to her face.
“You with me, dear? You’ve been injured.” One of his gauntlets pulled back into the forearm piece of his armor so that he could lay a firm but human hand on Wanda’s shoulder. He wanted to deflect her attention from the wires and Vision’s body. “Listen to me, I want to take a look at your leg, and give you something for the pain. Then I’ll take you to the Quinjet, all right? Wanda, talk to me.”
Wanda’s tears stopped short when she remembered and fully realized she had an onlooker, but her breath continued to come only raggedly. For some reason, she couldn’t control that, or the shake in her hands, or the throbbing in her head. She didn’t even try to listen to Tony; now that imminant threats seemed to be behind them, the only thing that didn’t hurt to hear was the blood rushing around in her own head and dripping from her face. The pain was immense but came in waves through different parts of her body, as if her body was trying to spare her the worst of it by staggering the affliction.
All was quiet, Wanda realized, after a moment’s hesitation. “I’ll take you back to the Quinjet, all right? Wanda, talk to me.” She hadn’t listened to him properly--this was merely a memory of her ears had picked up and her brain had initially discarded. Anything Iron Man said before was lost on her. Wanda realized she needed to say something and tried to speak, and realized her jaw was so firmly shut against the pain that only muttering was coming forth. It took conscious effort to open her mouth and form the words, but even then she wondered if she was articulating the heavy, breathy, foreign words well enough. “I don’t know if I can walk...”
Even after she said this, it took a moment before Wanda was willing to try. She looked between the CPU to her hands that held it, unable to tell the difference. She had to reach down and push herself off the ground, but wondered how she was supposed to do that. Surely, there was some trick to it, she knew, to get her fingers to do as she needed them to, without dropping Vision’s brain--she absolutely couldn’t do that. Therefore, she was back as she started, needing an extra hand to help her up, which was odd as she had two right in front of her. Wanda squinted closer, inspecting the hands that had so recently been freed of their cargo and obligation, but now were bound to the drive in some ethereal and absolute manor she could neither name nor escape. Yet still, how could she stand?
Again, the pain came in a wave through her leg as a frigid gust of January air hit her largest wound. No blood-pounding or gushing could fend off the blustering Sokovian winter, and it was like Wanda had been offered a chance at clarity. She blinked up at her teammate, aware now of how coldly she sat, and the strange angle at which her leg was held, and how it wouldn’t respond properly when she tried to draw it in and stand upon it in a sweeping move all six year olds had mastered. He was watching her, waiting for her to do--or say?--something. An infinite kindness of a kind that usually seemed to her so clouded by sorrow now pooled in his eyes in a way she could almost see the substance of which it was made. The momentary contact made her again more keenly aware of herself. She placed both forearms, one with a sleeve and the other with scorched skin on his leg and pushed down to try and help herself up. Now, though she had the leverage she needed, her leg still didn’t work. “Will you help me?” she murmured. Her jaw had tightened again.

Wanda relaxed when the child’s demeanor changed. He had come in seeming rather manic and unpredictable, now he seemed starstruck and overwhelmed. She let her spell-casting hands drop to her sides, but moved no closer to the boy. There was something about him and his motives she didn’t quite understand yet. Still, Sam was a child and Wanda smiled when he identified her, perhaps to calm his nerves and perhaps to keep from laughing out loud at how surprised he seemed to find an Avenger...in the New Avengers Facility.
“I am the Scarlet Witch, but I’m curious what help you think we might need,” she looked him over, curiously if not a little unkindly, “or what help you think you can provide?”
The world had fallen apart in the last few months. As much was clear and undeniable. The Avengers’ team had fallen apart, other super hero factions were more-or-less barely-shy of all-out warring with one another. The public had turned anti-mutant and anti-hero. Still, Wanda puzzled. Little was going well, but except for a select few in Washington or in Washington’s pockets nobody had any sway and the arrests had already begun.

The Soul Reason (Wanda & Billy) 20 September 2016
Charles Xavier’s school for young mutants could only ever be a temporary solution to a complex problem. Wanda had the nagging feeling as she watched a few teenage mutants in the lawn dodging laser grids and jumping over exploding bombs in preparation for war. What else could it be? They were preparing the same way she had been prepared--whether they were on the same side was up for debate. Here they were, away from their families, away from the rest of civilization. They were being kept cloistered. It was for their own good, of course, but for how long? This solution to keep them in the middle could never last. Her father believed mutants could and should take over the world. Wanda herself had tried to live amongst them--happily for some years. In the end, this had failed. How long could Charles Xavier’s school stay in the middle, not part of a Mutant Triumph, and not integrated with the world at large? It couldn’t be permanent. Wanda would be interested to see what happened to it when one side ultimately prevailed over the other.
Silver spoon clinked against porcelain cup as Wanda stirred her coffee and tapped the extra drops off. The first day of fall had arrived with a chill that bit her skin and made Wanda wish she had packed something heavier when she had left the Avengers Facility. She would be back soon enough, if she returned at all. She hadn’t yet called Vision, for fear he would track her location from the phone. Perhaps when she left, then, she would make contact, then leave for her next location. Back at home, he was probably lonely without her. She was certainly lonely without him. Since he had come back from his time away, this week was the first he hadn’t been by her side. She had underestimated how used she was to having him around the house and in her bed. Then again, it may be the new house that had her up in the middle of the night and needing coffee so badly. Or maybe it was the uncertainty of what she was doing.
A young woman tripped over something in the grass--a sprinkler, perhaps--and fell towards some flagstone steps. Wanda flicked her wrist towards her, meaning to set her upright, but instead the lawn flattened itself out. The steps disappeared and the pathway extended down an even landscape. That was quite possibly the most difficult way to keep someone from falling down the steps. Wanda waited to see if anyone would notice. The girl got up, shaking and relieved.
Not all who Wander are Lost | Wanda & Charles | 14 September 2016
Something in Wanda was getting stronger. Two years ago, she had tried to keep the flow of the Hudson at bay for no other purpose than to prove her own strength and control to herself. Years ago, the task had drained her, overwhelmed her, and almost destroyed her. The great power of the river that couldn’t be controlled--Wanda had learned that by now. Some things simply couldn’t be controlled.
She felt dizzy and sick, even laying in bed in the middle of the night. In her mind’s eye, she could easily see herself laying in a little boat on that same river, laying on her back, looking up in the foggy night sky where there may have been stars. The glow and clamor of the city she loved would serenade her as she tossed and turned in the slowing river and the growing waves of the ocean. This time, she didn’t try to stop the flow. She would go wherever the little boat took her.
It was making her nauseous. Perhaps it was only her guilty conscious that had done the job. Or the hot night. Or the way Vision had visited for the night. She wished he hadn’t. He was always awake and would either ask to come with her or ask why she needed to go to the roof. Wanda didn’t want the company. Already, he probably felt her heart and breathing quicken as she rose from sleep to dream, then from dream to wakefulness. Only in her fully wakeful mindset was she tempted to shed a tear. Her breath hitched, but she kept it quelled.
Nothing of that seemed to matter now. Everyone who was gone was gone. There was no rewriting time. There was no escape. With everything she had and everything she was, why couldn’t she have been able to change something as simple as chronology? That was so straightforward. One thing happened after the next, but why? Why did they have to happen that way?
The unwellness seemed to grow stronger in her and Wanda sat up.
“Wanda, are you alright?”
“Of course, Vision.” She stood and walked to the window. In the New Avengers Facility, she was miles away from the river now. She could see the glow in the distance of the city she loved. It had been her home since she had arrived in America; first a dream and then her reality. And now it was gone.
“You are worried about something else.”
Wanda placed a hand on the window ledge and then her chin on her fist. “Yes and no. I’m not worried...in the conventional sense of the feeling. But I can’t shake what I’m feeling either.” Guilt? That was just static now. Shame? She only felt it when she thought about her victims. Or when she thought about how easily she had gotten off the whole affair. Technically, she had been doing her job. Technically, it wasn’t her fault.
But it was. It wasn’t shame, either. It was something deeper. How diasporic it felt that Vision was the one to console her when he had done something so similar. What a pair they made. Technically, it wasn’t his fault, either.
“If you should want to talk about it...”
“Thank you. Vision, I’ll keep it in mind.” She really could see the stars from here. Wanda turned and crossed the room, slipping on her tennis shoes along the way. “I’m going up to the room.” Come with me if you want.
But either he didn’t feel like it or sensed that Wanda wanted to be alone, for thee robot stayed behind. It was just as well. Up on the roof, Wanda lay down next to the pool. The heat from the day’s sun poured from the hot cement into her shoulders. It felt good, and made her aware of just how tight the muscles there had gotten.
It may have been minutes that Wanda lay like this, or much longer. She may have nodded off, but she was awake when the sky started to lighten. The sun wasn’t up yet, but the first of the early risers would be up soon. It had been months since Wanda had even touched her powers for the littlest of things from lighting candles to party tricks.
In a moment of defiance, she pointed straight above her. Slowly, she let static energy come from her fingertips, dance around her hand, then form a globule just a few feet above her reach. As she released her power, Wanda felt energy and tension leave her. She grew sleepy. Like wax, the globules of power lumped together in many spheres. Wanda didn’t try to congeal them. It was funny to watch what form it took. Finally, as she felt herself nod off and her head hit the pavement--she must have been tensing ever so slightly for a better view--she stopped.
Balls of crackling and hissing energy moved about like so many miniature stars. Wanda spread her arms in front of her, then spread them out to the sides--the globs followed the movement, mirroring the night sky, illuminating the world in red. Wanda snapped.
The clip was echoed by a thousand louder pops. All together, the noise was deafening. Some flew away in the shapes of birds. Some melted like snow or fell to pieces like old flowers. Nobody was near to hear it. The other Avengers were somewhere else doing their daily routines. Janet and Dr. Pym would be in New Jersey. Dr. Strange in Manhattan, Scott in Long Island. Everyone had somewhere else to be, except for her.
A large bird came to rest on the poolside deck. It watched Wanda for a moment before bursting into flame. This was usual. Her energy would always consume itself before too long. By morning, the only thing left would be ash to be blown away or melted under rain.
“Wanda, are you alright?”
Wanda realized Vision must have heard the thunderclap of magic transfiguration. “Yes,” she replied, then stopped when she heard a soft cry. There was ash, but the was wasn’t her own. It hadn’t come from the magic she had extinguished, but glowed red, still part of a magical image. A tiny red head came out of the shimmering coals, though it wasn’t hot to Wanda’s touch. She picked up the little baby bird.
“A phoenix.”
“Vision, I can’t do this alone.” She stroked the baby bird’s feathers. “I need to go to visit someone who can help people like me.” The bird flapped its wings and tried to fly, unable to lift its body with such little force.
“You will see Charles Xavier? I think this is a very good first step.”
Wanda paused, knowing Vision wouldn’t like where she was going. “Yes. And an old friend of his.”
--
Wanda hadn’t even waited out the day before finding the address and making the arrangements to leave the Avengers Facility. Many had been firm with her, but none had said she absolutely could not leave. Just to be sure, Wanda left both her Avengrs card and her mobile phone and packed for a week. She doubted she would be gone longer than that before reaching her final destination.
“I’ll call. I promise I’ll call.” But Wanda wouldn’t promise more than that. She would neither promise to tell him what she was doing or whom she was seeing. Nor would she go into details about who Professor Xavier’s friend had been. It wasn’t a lie. Not outright, at least. There had been years when he had been close with Wanda’s father. But those years had passed.
Wanda had never before been to the X Men’s school. It was surprisingly close to the Avengers’ Facility. She had assumed it would be farther. But when she arrived by cab, the grounds were sprawling, and though they were better kept and the house had more character, it wasn’t too different from her own base of operations.
Even before Wanda reached the front door, there were signs of mutant life all around the premise. Children ran and tumbled and augmented and melted and transformed around her as they played between lessons. A place like this would have been nice growing up. Wanda knew it had been around when she was a child, but there was nothing like it in Sokovia.
She rang the doorbell. A young man covered in glass barreled through the door, fell down the steps, and shattered on the foyer. Wanda gasped and wondered who to tell that a young glass man had just killed himself. Wanda clutched her bag tighter, afraid of the moment someone would answer the door, until she heard laughter. The young man had brought himself back together again. “I fooled you, didn’t I?”
Wanda smiled with relief. He looked so proud of himself for her reaction. “You absolutely did.” He seemed pleased with that and went to join the other children, who high-fived him and continued on with their game.
I Come In Peace! | Open
Sam dropped down on one of the landing pads near the New Avengers Facility. His helmet told him that was the best place to go, and it hadn’t let him down so far. The place was huge! Sorta like a military base, but more modern and far cooler.
He kept his helmet on as he walked up to what he thought was the front entrance. Maybe they had a receptionist or something that could direct him where to go. However, the closer he got, the more his helmet blipped. It alerted him he was setting off a lot of security stuff, which probably wasn’t a good sign…
Before he could even get to the door, he heard someone behind him. He turned around swiftly, throwing his hands up in the air saying, “I come in peace!”
Wanda hadn’t bothered with her Scarlet Witch uniform in months, not since the incident with the Black Knight. It hadn’t felt right to gussy up and make herself into that recognizable public figure. She had been reading over a coffee when the alarms started going off. She hadn’t even bothered to change out of her jogging clothes from that morning when the alarms started to go off. First, she seized and jumped into an action-stance, then let that reaction subside. What had happened last time she’d used her powers? She couldn’t do it again and prove that the whole world around her was right.
She went back inside, then downstairs to the front where the intruder alarms were loudest. Wanda held up a hand. It wasn’t a frightening gesture without her costume and cloak, but anyone who knew her would know to stop. The intruder was young. “I come in peace!” he said.
“Then stop,” she said. “Who are you?”
Bad Publicity (One Shot/ Open Starter) 10 June 2016*
Chaos. That was the only word Vision could use to describe the images he saw playing on the television. A building in ruins, torn to shreds by some sort of explosion, while fire ate away at what little remained. Memories of Sokovia flooded his mind, and he leaned over to place a kiss on top of Henry’s head. He’d been visiting with his creator the night before, simultaneously helping in the lab and doting on the youngest Pym. Vision hadn’t even considered watching the news until he entered the common room several hours later, catching sight of what Janet was staring at. ‘Mutant Terrorist Attack Strikes Manhattan’ was the headline scrolling along the bottom of the screen, but the android barely noticed it. He was too focused on the flash of red that struck the building at the beginning if the clip. It was famiiar, far too familiar. The footage swapped to that of a traffic camera next, confirming his worst fears. Wanda. “Vision?” “I have to go.” he said suddenly, handing off Henry to Janet before she could even react. The sudden movement startled him, caused him to start wailing, but Vision had already phased through the wall. He felt horrible, leaving the child to cry like that, but finding Wanda was his only focus. He found her in their room on the other side of the facility, watching the news footage with such intensity that she didn’t even notice him phase in. “Wanda,” he said gently, coming to a stop behind the couch and placing his hands on her shoulders. A quick mental command turned off the television, leaving the room In complete silence. “watching that won’t help.” He knew from experience; the android had watched the memory logs of his time under Hydra’s control over and over again, sought out news footage of every attack, but reliving his past mistakes couldn’t change them. If anything, it only made him feel more like a monster.
Wanda blinked a couple times at the blank screen. Her eyes felt bleary after looking at it or as long as she had. How long had it been? She had sat down, only meaning to watch for so long, but here she was, probably hours later. She smacked her lips together. They felt dry and cracked. She raised a hand to her lips and ran her nail across the bottom lip, seeing if the skin needed chapstick or if it would come free. As it turned out, chapstick would be necessary. And a glass of water. Mostly the water. She huffed.
"Vizh, what did we say about doing that?” she fussed. Her eyes felt puffy. Wanda rubbed her forefingers and thumbs above and below her eyes, then shut them tightly. She felt awful. Not just because of the stories about her the anchors all told, but sheerly from looking at the screen so long. “Don’t sit so close to the TV, Wanda, you’ll hurt your eyes.” How many times had she heard that from her Mom and Dad? Foster Mom and Foster Dad. She huffed and rolled her shoulders, then breathed deeply and straightened her back in a luxurious stretch that would rival any cat’s sunny afternoon pleasure.
“I just want to do something. And there’s nothing else too do but turn back time...and trust me, I tried that.”
Shell of a Man |Wanda & Tony & Vision| 20 January 2016
Vision moved slowly through the rubble-filled crater, meticulously searching each pile of flaming debris for any possible signs of human life. The Sokovian Hydra base had been obliterated within seconds, leaving nothing but stone and ash in its wake; the probability of survival was a mere 0.01%, but that percentage, however slight, still allowed some margin for error. It was not impossible for the Avengers to survive, but rather highly improbable; a minute distinction, though one of great importance.
Wanda Maximoff, mutant: Designation; the Scarlet witch. Probability manipulation, otherwise known as chaos magic.
She could exploit variables and alter them at an unnatural rate, leaving the android’s earlier calculations completely unusable. Now, any possibility, no matter how illogical, could be warped and twisted in the Avengers’ favor. A well-placed piece of rubble could have shielded them, or several of the explosives might have failed to detonate; the process was entirely random.
The woman’s powers were wrong, illogical; entirely incomprehensible for a creature devoted to reason. The android continued to search through the crater, attempting to adjust his calculations accordingly for each failure, but he simply found himself growing more and more disoriented. In mere minutes, all previous mission assessments Vision tried to access were littered with errors. The data he was collecting from the area was far too skewed to be accurate, filled with countless outliers and fluctuations that the android simply could not identify. It was almost as if his onboard computer was malfunctioning, despite all scans alerting him of the contrary.

…Mandatory system reset engaged…
Update to mission directives; new directives: abort current operations, switch to airborne surveillance.
Vision took to the sky, activating all recently developed cloaking mechanisms. Due Iron Man’s internal attack of his systems several weeks prior, the android had managed to collect variety of sensitive information from the suit’s data archives without being noticed. Because of this valuable discovery, he could now travel freely without appearing on any military grade radar, among other things.
He spotted his targets soon enough; the Scarlet Witch was lying near the edge of the crater, obviously injured, though Iron Man was still airborne.
How unfortunate.
The Android targeted the weaker of the two, diving below the earth and positioning himself beneath the injured woman. If he killed her quickly, he could focus all of his efforts on her apparently unharmed ally.
“Understatement of the year, I think I may have led us right into a trap.”
Immediately following Tony Stark’s warning, Vision partially emerged just behind the Scarlet Witch and grabbed her by the throat.
“The survival of you and your ally was a statistical anomaly. It will not happen again.”
With that, he slammed her head against the ground.
The chance was infinitesimally small, really, that Vision would lose his grip on her, that he would lose his facilities to maintain a certain density. Vision was a well-polished machine and rarely, perhaps never, made mistakes. Yet, here he was, with his hand slipping through Wanda’s head. She stood, and for a split second the man who wore her lover’s body was off-balance. “Your statistics bore me,” she spat. “Probability means nothing while magic still exists. Or can’t your programs keep up?”
Wanda staggered closer. One of her legs wasn’t working too well and wouldn’t support her full weight. Her hands waved around one another, as if casting off a skein of yarn, fishing line, or a pulley. Scarlet magic flared and entwined itself around Vision’s body, snaring it, and making it grow heavy, until the ground around him buckled. “Do you still think you have the upper hand, robot?” Physical pain and the emptiness of betrayal were making Wanda snappy. “What’s the probability of your success, now? I’d love too know how much I need to correct for.” She held a gesture like tying a knot, and the magic in her hands disappeared, though the metal body remained shimmering.
“What’s the probability now!?!”
There was almost certainly something broken in her leg. She hobbled forward, gritting her teeth as she approached him. The weight was beginning to make a large crater in the ground under the weight of his straining body. “Don’t mistake, even for one moment, that I am not the most dangerous person you could ever fight...simply because I loved you.”
Wanda extended one shaking hand over Vision’s head, and pulled with all she had. The metal of his face peeled back, exposing the wire brain and hard drive nerve centers he possessed. One by one they popped out, curled up, flew free, and into Wanda’s hand. The body stopped struggling, and Wanda released her grip on it, and the one she had on herself. She fell to the ground, finally willing to take a look at her leg, shocked too see how much flesh was missing. She touched it with a glove. It was impossible to tell just how much blood she lost. The touch of dirty leather and dirty, torn-open skin stung and brought tears to her eyes.
Wanda buried her face in the mess of wires. She didn’t even know if it would turn on, if it was properly connected again. Was there anything left, at all, even if it worked? Who knew anything yet. It felt too soon for tears, but they came anyway. She wept from the searing pain of the flesh and the raw ragged pain of the heart. “I loved you,” she repeated.
Beware the Black Knight (Wanda & Fandral) 28 October 2015
Wanda seemed to be paralysed from her actions, and Fandral honestly couldn’t blame her. He had to keep pressing forward. If the Black Knight got away, then the same thing could only happen again later on, but with someone different.
“You don’t get to speak,” Fandral hissed, kicking the man over onto his back He reached down and jerked the Ebony Blade from the downed swordsman’s hand.
Fandral stared at the black sword for a moment in complete awe. The ore used was so absent of color, it didn’t even sparkle or reflect light. More importantly, he felt so enchanted. More coughs and sputters of attempting at words came out of the Black Knight. He seemed to settle on a wheezing laugh instead of words. Fandral looked down.
“Their blood is on your hands, too.”
Without thinking, Fandral gripped tightly to the Ebony Blade in his left hand. He lifted the sword up and stabbed down, piercing straight through the other man’s armor, straight through to the pavement below. When he realised what he’d done, he stepped backwards, his hand shaking. What the in the Nine Realms did I just do?
Sirens could be heard. Their safety officers would take care of this. The fire, the bodies…he quickly pulled the sheath off the now dead knight. He stared at the sword sticking out of his chest, and with a swift motion, pulled it out and stuck it in the sheath.
“Wanda, we need to leave.”
“You killed him...” Wanda whispered. She still sat astride Firehooves as Fandral did his dirty work. Wanda had taken an oath never to take a life if it could be prevented. She took such an oath very seriously. Even in light of her misstep, she would never go and kill one more person either because one more or less didn’t matter or because of anything they’d done to deserve it. That wasn’t what Avengers did. It’s not what any sort of hero did. She shook all over, her fingers stroking the saddle in which Fandral had been sitting, rooted to the spot, unable to stay, not wanting to go.
The knight chose for her. Wanda didn’t argue.
What would happen to them now? Even if they left at this very moment and she made it back to the New Avengers Facility, even if she managed to escape this for the time being there would be consequences. They’d come for her. They’d come for her with guns and combat gear. They’d come for her with pepper spray and arisol. They’d come for her with the law and stipulations. There was no way out of this. Again, Wanda tried to deny that such a thing could have happened. After all, she hadn’t meant to do it. How easy would it have been for her to just not have cast that curse. How easy would it have been to take an extra second to aim properly?
The fire burned hotter all the time.
The jumpers started. Wanda thought once about trying to soften their fall so they might walk away free, then twice about what more damage she might cause if she did. It took long seconds for them to hit the ground. Their legs kicked and their arms tried to grab onto something that could break their fall. Wanda reckoned it was just long enough to regret their decision before they landed. When they hit the pavement, their legs snapped first, then the rest of them quickly followed. Not one got up.
The only thing extinguished were their screams.
In Her Defense | Magneto
“As mutants, we must protect ourselves in this trying time,” Magneto’s voice rose above the swarm of mutants standing below him, all of them cheering.
Mutants were the focal point of the news once more, and this time it wasn’t his face being shown. It was his daughter’s. She betrayed him when she went with the Avengers, leaving him and their cause behind. For the year following, he stayed completely out of her life, but he could no longer sit idly by.
He stared directly into the camera set up before him. Not but five minutes earlier, he hijacked every major news station across the United States and what global news networks he could acquire. The government would hear him speak whether they liked it or not.
Magneto’s hand rose and the crowd quieted down once more.
“The Brotherhood refuses outright to sign anything documenting us as superhumans, mutants, or whatever sub human category you wish to place us in. Hear us and know that if you plan to force us to join in this regime, we will not go blindly. We will fight for what’s ours, and what’s ours is the freedom to merely exist. If you try take that from us, we will take that from you as well.”
A smile crept over his lips. “This Registration Act is a sign of fear. You have a right and reason to be afraid. This message is a warning, and a threat. You know what we are capable of. If you believe this is the worst, you haven’t seen the true destruction that can be brought upon humanity.”
Another cheer boomed from the crowd below. This time he let it ring. His brothers and sisters needed to be heard across the globe. The world needed to know that he had followers and that they were not afraid.
“For any mutants who wish to join our cause, come find us. We will welcome you with open arms. Fight for your future with the Brotherhood at your side.”
He would have gone on, but the feed was cut. The cheering continued as Magneto began heading back to his living space. Even if the feed wasn’t directly from that location, he couldn’t risk the Brotherhood being caught. Soon, they would be finding a new place to camp out. Possibly somewhere closer to the action.
The T.V. was always on these days. Wanda wasn’t the only one watching, she knew, but it made her feel more settled when she could passively stay in touch with what people were saying, rather than knowing people were talking and not knowing what it was they were saying. As she stirred rice in a pot of chicken broth, she listened in to the “news” broadcast. Wanda wondered idly when they’d stop calling this story news and start calling it grounds for her arrest. “..thank you for joining us, it’s always a pleasure to have a mutant specialist on the show...” Wanda glanced at the screen and was fairly confident that the woman in the cream suit wasn’t, in fact, a mutant, but rather a human who studied them academically. Still, she didn’t turn off the screening, even when Scott came down and picked up the remote.
“I was watching that,” she said, and reached for the remote. Wanda had been excruciatingly careful about using her powers lately, but with simple things, but this one slipped from her hand and caused the remote to slip from his. She sighed and let him pick it up. “I’m sorry.”
“Jeez. I just wanted to know what else was on.” Wanda didn’t reply, and went back to stirring and listening to the news. “How can you stand to listen to that, anyway?”
“They’ve said nothing I don’t already know. I’m waiting to hear something I don’t.”
“...As mutants, we must protect ourselves in this trying time.”
“Oh, no,” Wanda groaned. Not this again.
“What, do you know him? Magneto, right?”
“He’s my father,” she explained, then held her hand out to keep him quiet so she could hear. This was the something she didn’t already know. He spoke about revenge, about righteous anger, about fear, and about revenge. Her father said nothing Wanda hadn’t already heard a million times, except this time it was all because of her. How embarrassing. It took only a couple minutes (Wanda could remember the days when he’d go on for hours) before the screen was turned back over to NBC News.
“So, I’m guessing you take after your mom?”
“I wouldn’t know,” she replied quietly, as she pulled out her phone and dialed her father’s number. Jackass. She held it to her ear and let it ring. “Excuse me for a minute, will you. And feel free to change the channel.”
Beware the Black Knight (Wanda & Fandral) 28 October 2015
Wanda let go of her death grip on Fandral’s torso, and looked up at the knight overhead. He was a few stories up; within earshot but far enough he didn’t think he had to be concerned about a ground-bound knight and his lady. “I don’t think he’s listening either.” Wanda scowled in frustration. She would have preferred to parlay first, if at all possible. “Alright, let me try…” She trailed off and began to focus on her magic. She knew some Asgardians had magic. She’d have to ask later what kind he possessed.
It took only a second for the bolt of red magic to reach the Black Knight, as Wanda pointed out his wings and sent bolts of pure energy their way. It was more than a hex; this magic was controlled with the express purpose of dislocating the wings from the horse. There was at least a fair to middling chance the horse would survive the fall. And without the horse, the Black Knight was just a guy.
But the magic missed the horse, as the knight urged on the Pegasus, and evaded her. “Ah~” she enunciated in frustration, and aimed again, this time with a more forceful bolt, trying to strike the horse down in any way she could. Fandral couldn’t reach from here; it was on Wanda to bring it down into sword’s reach without either of them getting toasted by his laser lance. “Hold still,” she muttered, and threw a third, most forceful bolt the knight’s way.
The scarlet light shone brightly, and Wanda could only make out the dark blur at the center of the collision. She’d hit the knight, surely, as was confirmed by the shrill, ear-piercing horse’s screams, then the scraping of concrete, the shattering of glass, the heat of a roaring fire, and screams Wanda wouldn’t place at first. As the flash of her magic disappeared, she could see the horseman on the ground, and the building beyond as it started to fall. It bowed and buckled under its own weight, and flames licked the sides and interiors. Wanda’s hand went to her mouth, and she watched in horror as the scene unfolded in slow motion.
Fandral had his head down-ish and forward while she did her magic. He didn’t want his head to get singed by any of the spells. There were some frustrated noises coming from Wanda, and since he didn’t hear anything else, he figured that meant she wasn’t hitting him.
Then he heard the horse scream. He looked up, hoping to see the horseman falling to the ground, where he could be apprehended, but…there was an immense boom, and sprays of glass filled the air. The Black Knight fell to the ground, but the bolt kept going.
He wanted to look behind him, but instead he pulled the horse to a halt. People in the roads were either still screaming or standing with small devices watching. While the building slowly tumbled to the ground. There was a lump in his throat, he didn’t know what to say. His eyes went to their foe, who laying still on the ground about a hundred feet away. Fandral leapt off the horse and he staggered for a moment. The sound shook him a bit. He should be used to this by now.
He approached the knight, who was then trying to stand up. He must’ve been a hardy fellow to fall from that height. The Ebony Blade was still in his hand, the fabled weapon of old. Fandral put his boot over the sword, firmly clamping it to the ground as he drew his own. With his rapier sitting at the man’s throat, he decreed, “By the order of Odin, Allfather, I place you under arrest for your crimes.”
Very hoarsely, he heard coughing and sputtering vaguely resembling a laugh. “My crimes?” He heard, softly. “What about hers?”
Fandral looked back to Wanda.
Even before the dust and magic had cleared, it was entirely obvious what had happened. Then things happened in a slow motion chronology that would forever remain chronicled in Wanda’s memory. The building instantly burst into flame. There was no catching fire, just a magical inferno that hadn’t been caused, only born. It burned hot. Even from half a block away, Wanda could feel the heat on her own skin. It felt like it had been ablaze for hours. Then there were the screams. Unlike the rest of the scene, the people who were still trapped inside hadn’t been prepared. As they found themselves in an inescapable inferno, their screams raised to a fever pitch and one by one were snuffed out as the fire roared on.
Wanda found herself incredibly out of place where she was. There she sat, literally astride her high horse, and unable to do anything to help them. Anything. As the fire crackled out of control, Fandral seemed, somehow, not to notice the dire need to help, to change what had happened as Wanda sat on the wrong side of just barely too late. She clutched to his armor as he walked Firehooves to the Black Knight who had, until a moment ago, been Wanda’s first and only priority. Now he looked pathetic as he lay, small and broken, on the ground. Wanda wanted to help him up, not put him under arrest.
And then he begged the question, “My crimes? What about hers?”
Wanda looked about herself, hand over her mouth, fighting back tears or screams or apologies or whatever might come out if she let herself speak. She wanted to turn back the clock, just by a few minutes. Instead of screaming, Wanda tried to reach inside of herself for something, anything that would change what had happened. Her training incomplete, she found nothing there on which she could draw. Or perhaps even the most accomplished sorcerers and witches wouldn’t be able to turn back the clock. Perhaps that was one thing that could never be changed. While Wanda gasped at straws, the fire burned on.

Wanda blinked a long blink when the screen went dark. The repetitive voices of the reporters had long since made their way into her mind, and Wanda could almost hear the rest of the broadcast play even without the screen playing it in front of her. The images she’d seen, already trapped in her mind, had been burned for a few glowing seconds on her eyes. As she squeezed her eyes shut, the strain of staring at the screen (goodness only knew how long it had been since she turned it on) filtering out of her tired facial muscles.
“I know, Vizh.” Wanda pinched the bridge of her nose, then moved her hand to hug her folded leg. “I know...I should be doing something...” But there was nothing to be done. Things had gotten so out of hand so fast. One moment, Wanda had been doing her job and doing everything she possibly could to help the citizens of her adoptive city stay safe against insane sorcerers like the Black Knight. That sort off thing was exciting, and she’d routinely felt like she’d done a good thing, but things had gone wrong so fast. In retrospect, the combination of fighting long-range in close quarters between the buildings was just begging for trouble. The next moment, she’d thrown a spell too far and missed, and the building had instantly caught ablaze. Nobody affected by this wanted her help, and everyone on her team had suggested to Wanda that she stay out of the limelight for a little bit.
The way the media hype was growing, Wanda had a feeling this wasn’t going to blow over as she’d hoped beyond hope it might in the beginning.
“I want to do something, but there’s nothing to be done,” she replied, turning to the door, and finding him much closer to the bed where she sat. Wanda had been immersed, but she would have heard Vision’s footsteps on the floor. Wanda raised an authoritative eyebrow and cocked her head in a plea. “Vizh, we talked about doing that.”
