Going through the legal system is scary, exhausting, time consuming, triggering, and so much more. I am so proud of you for speaking out and sharing your story! You are a survivor.
“Hello! My name is Kaijah (like the American Girl doll, Kaya), I am 16 years young and I am a survivor of sexual abuse. This photo was taken by my mother as I walked into the capitol building where my school held prom this year. Friends by my side and art project in hand. I painted Van Gough’s “The Starry Night” onto a violin for the prom art gallery and ended up winning first place! This was one of the most enjoyable nights I had in literally months. I was able to forget all about my troubles and genuinely smile, laugh and dance the night away with my pals. I felt so beautiful that night in my fitted pink dress. I NEVER imagined myself going to prom, especially as a sophomore, but I decided I needed to push myself out of my comfort zone; which is something I do not regret doing. I am still dealing with the legal process of sending my rapist to prison. He will get 10-15 years for what he had done to me over the course of a year. I am seeking treatment and taking medication in an effort to recover from the emotional trauma I have endured, and I can tell you it is no walk in the park. However, I am trying my best to power through. I am a survivor, not a victim. I encourage anyone else who is suffering any sort of abuse to seek help, to tell someone as soon as possible, because you are worth it!”

but you are right. Abuse is not pretty; there is nothing redeeming about it. I’m glad you shared this photo to help others understand that while we are survivors, it was no walk in the park to get here.
“It’s not pretty. Maybe it’s triggering. But this was the moment I realized abuse is a lot more than just physical harm; there is so much that leads up to this point and I want people to know that. Follow my blog for a more extensive rant on my situation.”
“I was abused physically for 9 years, mentally/emotionally for 12 years, and sexually twice. I have an extreme form of PTSD that causes me physical pain, but I try to find at least one reason to smile every day because I know that I survived.”

A circle of support people is so important in any recovery process! I am so glad that you have this woman in your life to share the journey with! "There was no real moment I knew, but this amazing woman reminds me all the time that I am a survivor. Two suicide attempts and two clinical diagnoses’ later, I’m proof that everyone can tame their demons. The stigma of mental health and opening up about things makes it almost impossible for people to just talk about what they’ve been through and have people help them heal from those experiences. So don’t be afraid to open up, that’s the biggest thing I regret about growing up. I didn’t think it was okay to talk about things that made me not okay."

“We had a letter burning ceremony in my Therapeutic Writing class. I wrote about what happened to me this summer, expressing all the anger and hatred I held onto. I named my rapist. And I burned him. I let go. It is time to lift the weight and be okay.”
It's there other way we can contribute to this proyect, besides sending pictures?
There are a couple of different options! 1) You can submit a photo that isn't yourself. For example, a picture of your favourite quote, or an object that means a lot to you. 2) You can send us a text post about your story, or how you see yourself as a survivor, or 3) you can share and promote the project so that more people can benefit from the inspirational stories!
This is one of the best proyects i've ever seen to help people get through this huge problem! All the girls who have submited pictures are so brave and i'm so proud of all of them. Thank you so much for doing this.
Thanks so much! You are so right - it takes an immense amount of courage to stand up and tell your story! I really hope this project helps people get through an incredibly difficult situation!
