Sylvia Sleigh is best-known for her realist and figurative paintings that reject the male gaze. A key figure in the New York feminist art scene, Sleigh challenged the art historical canon by creating paintings of men that referenced the erotic portrayals of women by western masters. The museum recently acquired this portrait of the artist’s friend Ira Joel Haber, which highlights the sitter’s discomfort and vulnerability.
