Just got called fatherless, and oho, lemme tell you: I am my dad. My parents met on the internet, through a video clip of my dad's heavy metal band circa 2002. He too had to take an extra year of highschool because he failed english class despite being a literal writer. While I was watching Invader Zim on his old DVDs he was reading Johnny the homicidal maniac which is a comic by the same author. In highschool he ran a D&D club, was a soprano in choir, and had Reddish brown curls so long people though he was a girl from the back. He smoked a pack a day, survived of of dr. Pepper, and memorized American history while working on cars for fun. He now listens to lesbian Kpop and works in the beverage supply industry. His hot topic membership is older than me. We are The Same Person.
its interesting being a kid with anger issues and a sadistic streak and learning to regulate those urges and coming to understand that the part of your psyche that screams for the suffering of those who pissed you off is wrong and irrational and that causing suffering for its own sake is not okay, and then growing up and learning that actually all those normal people didnt actually learn that lesson
Ohmygod I just saw a post about how being otherwise marginalized as a white person doesn't absolve you of your need to fight against racism and I didn't wanna reblog because this is only sort of related- for context, I'm half-white, half Filipino, born in Socal and raised in various cheap 1 bed apartments across north america.
There are very few times in my life that I've gone "I'm too woke for this conversation" but let me tell you, I was on a bus with my whitest homegirl who is otherwise Pretty WokeTM, and we pull past some police and I forget what exactly I said but I made some kind of reference to running from the police and she was like "that's only cause you're hood/have done crimes" and I turn my head slowly because I wasn't even thinking about myself, "No, it's because the darker your skin is, the bigger the target you are, they don't know my childhood crimes here in Canada, I'm not scared to face my past. I'm scared that one of these days, especially when I visit my cousins down south, that they're gonna see brown and see red because god forbid I go for a jog at night and they only see my summer tan"
And we don't get into it like that because we're on a bus, what i actually manage to reply is "No I was making a racism awareness joke I thought you would catch on to" so she scrambles to say "I'm aware of systemic racism but not all cops are bad people, most of them are good" Ok cool statement, "Yeah, some of them are good, but the system is corrupt" I say plainly. "yeah, it needs reform, but the idea of police in general is something good and necessary"
And after she said that last bit I genuinely didn't know what to say, I muttered ACAB and changed the subject, but here's the sum of my thoughts:
In a society where the laws are fair and the taxes are even, where drugs are decriminalized and addiction is treated like the illness it is, where guns are just loud shiny toys and aren't made explicitly to kill, where the working class is the only class and we're all equally upper-middle, where education is both available and educational, where the prison systems are rehabilitation facilities instead of slave trades, where crimes need not be committed to survive, physically or emotionally, yes, there would still be the one in 10,000 bad people. Yes, would would still need judge, jury, executioner. But give that power to 1-3 people in every Firefighting and EMS crew instead, because those are the only people who should be responding to it anyways.
It just really did get to me that there are genuinely people who can see a cop and feel absolutely no fear at all. I had a friend who's foster brother had a close call with some racist cops in Arkansas. It's so fucking ever-present.
it bothers me when someone brings up misogyny in shounen anime and people shrug it off with "its designed for teenage boys, what can you expect." like well. idk i think its actually pretty important that shows for teenage boys are normal about women. i mean i think all media should be normal about women but teenagers are impressionable i think we could put a little bit of feminism in the teenage boy shows. it might do some good. you never know.
