YOU GUYS LIKE YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW HOW THRILLED I AM ABOUT THIS!!! that’s my language!!!! my culture!!!! my language went from almost dead to on fucking duolingo!!!!! isn’t that incredible!!!!!!
I’ve been of two minds about it since the announcement came out, but what a better way to break my ambivalence than a reaction like this? I mean, when in doubt, ask the experts, right?
So I’m gonna start up my Duolingo again, give it a real shot, cause yes, I don’t want to be the white girl who learn a few words of another language and gets praised for how worldly and accepting she is while native speakers are oppressed.
But also, if seeing your language show up on Duolingo sparks a reaction this emphatic, don’t I have an obligation to encourage Duolingo to do it more for other languages?

anyway, it didn’t even occur to me that some people might think of this as a bad or problematic thing, but wow the comments on this post are wild. so i’m gonna add in my take on it okay?
anyone who wants to learn, just fuckin go for it. fuck this whole purist attitude some people seem to have. culture is meant to be shared! it’s not supposed to be hidden away! i’ve been told all my life to share my culture with whoever will listen, especially if it’s with someone not native.
so absolutely learn the language if that’s something you want to do!!! and why stop there? dive headfirst into the rest of the culture if you want! i promise it’s interesting! learn our traditions and our history and how we almost went extinct. and then tell everyone you know. tell everyone what really happened and how the little paragraph we get in your history books is full of lies and half-truths.
maybe that last bit is too ambitious, but the fact that our languages are available to so many people now kinda gives me a lot of hope. i don’t know if that’s silly or not but yeah, that’s my stance on it
