I cant take the nickname "mouthpiece" seriously im sorry. Its too cool to be called "dead mans mouthpiece" for one. Thats not how nicknames work. Nicknames are usually either insults or inside jokes in my expierence and 'dead mans mouth piece'? bro. human john doe that looks almost exactly like arthur, except some things are just slightly off and uncanny about his appearance. his hair flicks out at the ends and his eyes are set deeper into his skull, the pupils an even brighter tint of gold than arthur's. his fingers twitch and he stands a good few inches taller than his friend, posture unnervingly straight and his limbs fixed staunchly at his sides as he doesnt swing his arms when he walks.

john, of course, feels immeasurably guilty about this, he's practically stealing arthur's body all over again! he cant possibly take something as personal as his friend's appearance, let alone distort it in this unsettling way. so he grows his hair out and dyes it decidedly black, makes sure to have an entirely different fashion sense to arthur—long flowing scarves and wide brim hats tilted over his face. he shaves off any facial hair that could even resemble arthur's signature mustache, and leaves it to grow elsewhere, knowing arthur likes his arms and legs largely shaven. he eats the three meals daily that arthur seems to never have the appetite for, learns to cook, spends his evenings writing, maybe he takes up painting. doing the things that arthur applauds him for and laughs off as entirely out of his own area of expertise.

john avoids frequenting the same places arthur does and tries not to have the same friends as him, despite how that may impede investigations and how desperately out of the loop he finds himself feeling. despite how arthur's hand on his shoulder singes even deeper guilt into him as the man pleads him to stop being so distant. just so nobody could possibly mistake them for eachother. just so theres no way anybody could even insinuate he's trying to steal arthur's life. just hoping that one day, he might truly start to feel like his own person again.

remember during the Addison arc; where it felt like arthur and john had switched personalities? and we all just accepted that as arthur being really traumatised or something, and now he’s all better?

what a waste of character.

maybe that’s who arthur truly is. someone without thought, without kindness. and maybe john will only truly experience being human when arthur is opposing that. they’re yin and yang, never both truly human together. but they can’t achieve humanity without the other either, so they stick together.
