Hi there! I haven't actually read this work, and embarrassingly don't really know anything about it, but I came across it in a Google search about Kenneth Grahame (Wind and the Willows author). I just looked it up and it seems to be the characters in The Golden Age role playing as Knights of The Round Table.

She won't play unless she's allowed to be Tristram! Be somebody else this time.” Charlotte said nothing, but breathed hard, looking straight before her. The peerless hunter and harper was her special hero of romance, and rather than see the part in less appreciative hands, she would even have returned sadly to the stuffy schoolroom. “I don't care,” I said: “I'll be anything. Cute! But not Arthurian enough for the archive, merely characters talking about the Arthurian characters. Thanks for the shout though, it's adorable!

random PSA, I know a lot of people use duckduckgo as a Google alternative search engine, but it always kind of annoyed me when I was using it because it felt like No Name Brand Google

I have switched to using Startpage.com and vastly prefer it. for one thing, instead of displaying an "AI summary" at the top of the search results (unless you turn it off, yes I know), it displays the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article, with link, whenever it finds one that's relevant.

also a waaayyyyy better sense of design than duckduckgo

also private, European based, least annoying search I've used lately (RIP old "don't be evil" Google)

Infinity Search is an alternative search engine with a special focus on privacy

DuckDuckGo is a popular search engine for those who value their privacy and are put off by the thought of their every query being tracked and logged. Uses bangs, ![site] for in-page search (sells your data to microsoft and draws from fucking bing)

WolframAlpha is a privately owned search engine that allows you to “compute expert-level answers using Wolfram’s breakthrough algorithms, knowledgebase, and AI technology.” A data search engine.

Boardreader is a search engine for forums and message boards. It allows you to search forums and then filter down results by date and language.

Based in France, Qwant is a privacy-based search engine that won’t record your searches or use your personal details for advertising. Uses “&” as a bang search.

Another privacy-based search engine is Search Encrypt, which uses local encryption to ensure that users’ identifiable information cannot be tracked. Metasearch across multiple engines. 

Offering unbiased results from several sources, SearX is a metasearch engine that aims to present a free, decentralized view of the internet. Can be self-hosted. 

Gibiru’s tagline is “Unfiltered private search” and that’s exactly what it offers. Requires AnonymoX Firefox add-on for privacy. 

Disconnect allows you to conduct anonymous searches through a search engine of your choice.

Swisscows provides fully encrypted searches to protect your privacy and security. Built-in violence/porn filter cannot be overridden. 

MetaGer offers “Privacy Protected Search & Find” through its anonymised search. A plugin will allow it to be made a default.

Gigablast is a private search engine that indexes millions of websites and servers real-time information without tracking your data, keeping you hidden from marketers and spammers. Variety of filtration and refinement options for searching. 

Oscobo is a search engine that protects your privacy while you search the web. By not using any third-party tools or scripts, your data is protected from hacking and misuse. Has a Chrome extension to allow use in toolbar. 

https://search.marginalia.nu/ an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed. Use old-school searching rather than query-based for the best results.

https://4get.ca/ it works a lot like SearX, but honestly better. It doesn’t have its own index, but pulls from many others. I think it’s the best for research, since it allows you to search for answers from different indexes, is easy to configure, add free, and avoids censorship as much as it can.

With google search officially switching to full AI model, now more than ever it's important to fact check and source everything back to the original books. Relying on wikis and other search results or poorly researched/unsubstantiated summaries was always a bad way to learn, but now it can't be trusted by any metric. Just return to the source.

I teach a first year college course oriented around Arthuriana as the means of building critical reading writing and speaking skills, and it was already so difficult breaking the habits of using the like AI summaries etc as information gathering.

This summer I'm spending some time reframing some assignments, but I've added the Arthurian Preservation Project to the list of database sources for the class, right next to the Camelot Project from the Robbins Library in Rochester.

My own personal research stopped using Google as a point of contact years ago, but I have unrivaled access to databases currently between teaching at a uni in the USA and my status as a PhD researcher through a UK uni.

It’s amazing to hear the Arthurian Preservation Project is helping you and your students!

If there’s anything that can be improved upon to make it an even better resource, don’t hesitate to say so, and changes can be made to accommodate as many learners as possible as conveniently as possible.

Accessibility is definitely the biggest hurdles for the layman, but not with Google’s nonsense, we need reliable resources more than ever.

Konrad von Stoffeln: Gauriel von Muntabel. Edited and translated by Siegfried Christoph. Cambridge: Boydell and Brewer 2007 (Arthurian Archives 15).

Von Stoffeln's Gauriel dates to the late 13th c. and is described as the "last Middle High German Arthurian romance in rhyming couplets".

Hello! Thank you SO MUCH for the wonderful and important work that you do! I have some questions/tips:

For your list of modern retellings: There's a german retelling of Iwein by Hartmann von Aue as a children's book by the famous german author Felicitas Hoppe, it's called Iwein Löwenritter: Erzählt nach dem Roman von Hartmann von Aue (2008).

I noticed under "German Transcripts" of medieval texts so far there's only an edition of Wigalois. If I sent in more german editions / translations into modern german, it would qualify to be included right? :) (As a side note here: I think it would make sense for this rubric to be called not just "transcripts" but rather "editions", or something like "German editions and non-english translations", same for all the other languages of course. In theory it could also include translations into other languages, like modern german translations of french medieval texts etc? I just think that would be super cool + useful but obviously I understand you have to draw the line somewhere!)

I have access to "The Tristan Legend: Texts from Northern and Eastern Europe in modern English translation edited by Joyce Hill" and would love to scan it for the project. :) Is it correct that it's still needed?

Whoa I didn't know about that! That's really cool! For the modern retellings, I only include books which are out of print or from authors who have passed away. If an author is still earning royalties for the book then I don't archive it. But this is neat!

Yes any and all Medieval texts are welcome that would be a huge help thank you!

Hey! I saw you’re interested in the 1979 Arthurian anime and in your pinned you were looking for the Japanese version.

Well good news bc the entirety of the first series and the sequel series can be watched at @arthurianpreservationproject ! The trouble is there are no English subtitles, it’s never been subtitled, but even so it’s a start so you can check it out beyond the six dubbed episodes if you want.

Hi I just came across this and first of all thank you for creating something like this it is amazing second of all I think I have some stuff that you may not and have a couple of questions

First if we have content your looking for or media you didnt know you need to look for is there a way we should go about contacting you

Second of all concerning the media I do have one of them im not sure completely fits the bill as it is not a direct retelling of Arthurian mythology aka none of the characters are named the same but it is clear that inspiration has been taken heavily from Arthurian mythology spefically one form of modern retelling would that still count or not?

Otherwise I still have things that you might be looking for that I believe I saw on the website

These are the two that I have that I personally have not seen around a lot and what I mean by that is the first one I found at my local libraries second hand bookstore inside the library where they get donations from people or get rid of their own books I found it there and haven't seen another since or before same thing with the second I found years ago and have only seen a second hand copy of another book in series going for a lot more then I paid for the first making me think that it was priced wrong or something

Anyways the first was published in 1999

And the second was originally published in 1996 but this version came out in 2007

I've gone ahead and added the anthology Merlin by Martin H. Greenberg to the archival website as the book is out of print and the editor has passed away. Thank you for bringing it to my attention!

The other Merlin series by T. A. Barron however is still in print and the author still living, so as to not infringe on his copyright and to ensure he's still able to continue earning royalties from his books, I'll link to his website where people can browse his works and maybe buy them!

As for your questions, you're welcome to submit media here as an ask as you've just done, direct message this blog, or contact me via email at [email protected]. The archive is intended to host media that contains at least one Arthurian character. Something inspired by it isn't enough, but something with a cameo from Merlin or Morgan le Fay, for example, would count as far as I'm concerned.

I cant believe I found something out print then in my libraries second hand bookstore! Well not really all that surprising considering i live in an town with a large elderly population i have a few more that I have found on my bookshelf and please note I haven't checked if they where on the website yet or not so apologies if they are

This Arthurian trilogy I found at the same library second hand bookstore the first book came out in 2009 though there is another trilogy about Merlin she wrote which I don't own but is mentioned in the first book

Fun fact about the author she has degrees in Aruthurian myth!

This one was published in 1998 and I have only found copies of in my local library second hand bookstore

Now I will say I don't recommend the M. K. Hume trilogy. At all. Horrendous characterization choices right from the outset. Kay character assassination via gratuitous violence against women and children. Ick.

I haven't read the Rosalind Miles Guinevere trilogy, but it's on the list since I have read the Guinevere series by Sharan Newman and Persia Woolley respectively and the three of them are the subjects of an essay comparing the three trilogies.

A good rule of thumb is if the author is alive and collecting royalties from their book, the archive will not supply a digital copy. Some books are available to read on the Internet Archive like The Squire's Tales books by Gerald Morris and a link to that is provided, but otherwise I would suggest people purchase the books or check them out at the library so the author can earn from it!
