album 111: Deltarune Chapter 5 OST - Toby Fox (2026)

oh i fuck with this one too!! i think the dating-sim-style eastern asian influences on the music is very cool and epic. really interesting stuff. also who gave that flower man like 8 leitmotifs?? whose idea was that?? it fucks but like, it's a lot dude. i don't really know what else to say about this one, i really really liked it. maybe not as much as 2 or 3+4 but it still was a fun time. i listened to this one in the car with my friend (hi owen) and we got absolutely jumpscared by your dad's best friend, which is a hilarious sentence. anyways i really liked all of these, toby you evil genius. this has been a really fun time and i'm sad there's no new deltarune to listen to yet. good shit though.

album 110: Vessel - Twenty One Pilots (2013)

when i listen to this album part of me completely regresses into my 13-year-old self who hasn't developed any shame or embarrassment about his music taste. for the 48 minutes this album runs for, i allow myself to shed that self-consciousness and just have a good time. now, recommending it on the other hand, i am full of shame and embarrassment. it's like when someone asks me a question and i just have to tell them something cringey because there's no other answer. when people ask me what some of my favorite albums are i can't not mention this one. it was, and continues to be really important to me, but every time i bring it up i feel a little like a cringey 14-year-old girl who's just learned that she can be perceived.

this was one of the first albums i really got into on my own, so it'll always be important to me in that vein. i guess what i'm trying to say is that this album means a lot to me and i want to unabashedly love it for the good piece of art that it is. and it is really good in my opinion. but part of me will always be that little 13-year-old screaming the lyrics to car radio at the top of his lungs.

also to note: this is where twenty one pilots' discography really starts to sound its age, but like i said earlier, i don't mind. 2010's alternative is among my favorite genres, so i feel right at home with vessel. i like this one! please give it a shot!

album 109: Lungs - Florence and the Machine (2009)

holy shit florence. oops all bangers. bangers all the way down. not a bad song on this album, not even one that's not great. not even one i don't like. this is a really incredible listen. makes me feel like an old-school tumblrina. good good good shit. also dog days are over is one of the best songs ever written. this is one of the best, most cohesive, most important albums of the 21st century. that might sound like hyperbole but i'm being so genuine. i really really loved this one.

album 108: Whatever and Ever Amen - Ben Folds Five (1997)

favorite tracks: Kate, Song for the Dumped, One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces, Brick, Cigarette, Battle of Who Could Care Less

so if you'll notice, i did list half the tracks on this album as my favorites, as is my right. and i'd do it again. i would have done more if i had the patience or time to relisten to the tracks i don't immediately remember. speaking of which. this album is chock full of absolute jams. each of these is better than the last and they're all terminal earworms. kate especially. i cannot scrub the song kate from my mind. it just lives there now. i have a dear friend named kate and any time anybody says her name that's all i think about. and also i think it's worth mentioning that ben folds' voice is stellar. i would kill someone to sing like him. if i had his voice i would never shut the fuck up. i mean i don't really shut the fuck up to begin with but i would be even worse if i could sing like ben folds. i really love this album. i will be listening to it again and again and again and probably purchasing a vinyl and/or totally legally burning myself a cd.

album 107: Twenty One Pilots - Twenty One PIlots (2009)

favorite tracks: Aircatcher, Oh, Ms. Believer, Addict with a Pen, Trapdoor

i thought it would be fitting to listen to this while on the hour-long train ride to go meet my best friend (hi owen!) for brunch. it's a rally good album but uh. it made me so sad and weird. nothing gets you feeling sadder and weirder than listening to addict with a pen on public transportation at 10 am. i'm almost convinced that there's no better way to listen to this album actiually. it was also fascinating to listen to this for the first time as a longtime fan of tøp. the evolution of the band's sound is really palpable here. everything about it feels less polished, especially tyler's voice, but i think it works. and while every other album of theirs feels firmly of its time, which is not a bad thing necessarily, this one in stark contrast is deeply timeless to me. it sounds nothing like 2009. it's a really interesting listen, and if you have a passive enjoyance of tøp i highly recommend giving this a listen. i'm very inclined to revisit this one in the near future. maybe when i don't have a bet to narrowly lose.

favorite tracks: Raise Up Your Bat, The place where it rained, Hammer of Justice, It's TV Time!, Dark Sanctuary, Black Knife, Piano that may not be played well, BURNING EYES, Catswing, Castle Funk, NORTHERNLIGHT, Glowing Snow

hey so uh this shit rules. they just keep getting better. and it's unfair. i've said it before and i'll say it again, tricky tony i'll kill you with hammers. this is so good. this is so unbelievably good. it's very long but i hardly noticed. each track was banger after banger and i could hardly narrow down my favorites. i also had no context for this (and still have none at the time of writing) and it's still so good. i really really love the use of leitmotif. i'm a huge sucker for a leitmotif. and nobody alive does it better than this stupid fucking dog. keep em comin', boss. pump this shit directly into my veins. (also i feel a little bad being so mean to toby fox but it's entirely out of jealousy so i guess it's a little okay)

album 105: Trench - Twenty One Pilots (2018)

i feel like i have to start giving these actual number ratings again so 4.5/5 stars!

favorite tracks: The Hype, Cut My Lip, My Blood, Chlorine

when this album came out i was in my freshman year of high school and it blew my 15-year-old mind. and i've been a pretty big twenty one pilots fan ever since. which might be the second-cringiest thing i will ever admit to on the internet, (the first being that i unironically love weezer.) but at least nobody can say that tøp stopped making good music after their first two albums (sorry, weezer). and this record serves as pretty substantial evidence in the band's favor. it's also the first to be a real concept album i really love the instrumentation on this one. it has a very specific sound that firmly sets it in 2018, but like, in a good way. it's a very nostalgic listen, but that aside, it still holds up very well. i like this one a lot. really solid album.

good golly these song titles are killing me. it's very "2005 wannabe emo band that just graduated high school." true story by the way, they missed their high school graduation because of this record. they were young.

i have a deep, embarrasing affinity for this record. is it their best? hell no. not even close. scorching hot take, but i'll die on that hill. that one still belongs to pretty odd. but i understand the love this has received over the years, it's a really promising, solid debut. and 18-year-old ryan ross has the most pretentious lyrics i've ever heard i used to listen to this stupid thing over and over and over in high school, and it's a miracle i haven't made myself sick of it by now. a few years ago i was working on a project that was long ang grueling and the entire time i swear i listened to a fever you can't sweat out at least twice a day and it was awesome. there was a point i was gonna get to here but i kinda forgot what it was, uhhhh i like this album. is it good? who's to say. but i love it. and i guess that's what matters. maybe i'll come back later and write something meaningful or profound.

this is the first one of these that I listened to without context!! and it still ruled!! i'm absolutely in love with the soundscape of this chapter- the synths are so synthy, the drums are drumming it makes my ears very happy. like, genetically engineered to please me and my musical sensibilities. anyways I love this one a lot, might be my favorite of these so far.

my good friend (hi owen) made me listen to this!! all five chapters of this!! and I wouldn't have it any other way. this fucks. this absolutely fucks. also i am going to wring toby's neck with my bare hands. his compositions are incredibly complex and his use of leitmotif is completely unmatched. an absolute delight. this is also the only one of these that I had any real context for going in!! the rest, I was fully blind. and honestly I think that's for the better. i am unclouded by bias. anyways expect more of the deltarune ost down the line!! owen if you're reading this (which you most definitely are) i'm so grateful that you subjected me to this. no irony, just pure gratitude. i love you and this chapter rules. or some might say. it rouxls.

album 101: Speaking in Tongues - Talking Heads (1983)

this album fucking whips ass. grooves all the way down. unfortunate that it starts with its best track. burning down the house is unmatched sonically. its THE groove of all time.

in honor of reaching our 100th album, i'm gonna be changing things up moving forward (and backward!)

inspired by my friend (hi owen) and his rating system, which includes a heart (💖) for 5-star albums he really loves, i've decided to go back through all my reviews and add my own hearts in!! and i will be sure to also use this for future reviews. thanks again for sticking around this long, and here's to many many many more :)

album 100: Hawaii: Part II - Miracle Musical (2012)

favorite tracks: The Mind Electric, White Ball, Murders, Dream Sweet in Sea Major, Time Machine

holy shit! this is our hundredth album! omg!

this one was a wild ride, start to finish. it's an incredible project, and it's a tragedy that it's only 11 tracks long, but also i'm grateful we have any miracle musical to begin with. what a treat, a delight. this record is absolutely brilliant. the strange, experimental instrumentation lends itself really well to the themes and concepts of this piece. it's a really complex piece of songwriting. it's art. no other word for it really. just pure art. i love it. also apparently to record dream sweet in sea major joe hawley pretty much gave himself hypothermia so he would sound "cold". and that. is metal as fuck.

album 99: Hounds of Love - Kate Bush (1985)

favorite tracks: Cloudbusting, Jig of Life, Hello Earth, Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), Under Ice

what a weird album. i fucking love this one. kate bush is a genius and this record is revolutionary. that being said, cloudbusting is my favorite song ever. so. i am biased. but like, still. i don't really know what else to say about this one. it's just fantastic.

album 98: Party Rock - LMFAO (2009)

1.5/5 stars.

favorite tracks: i didn't hate when they used a vocoder.

this album sucks. and not always in a fun way. my sibling made me listen to this one, i swear to god i wouldn't have done it of my own volition. there's only so many consecutive songs about partying and getting laid i can stomach. i honestly only kept listening to it under the hope that eventually i would get to hear party rock anthem, but it's not even on this fucking record! it's on the next one! so it wasn't even fucking worth it!! this was honestly an agonizing listen. half of these tracks weren't even that offensive to my ears, they were just boring. there's only one song on this album that is more than 5 minutes, but they all feel 10 minutes long. or longer. and some argue that this record, and lmfao in general is camp. and listen, i am a sucker for camp, don't get me wrong. but this is like, borderline misogynistic and incredibly tiring camp. and also, i don't fully believe that it's camp to begin with. i believe these guys are 100% serious. i think that lmfao genuinely believe that this is who they are. there's nothing really ironic or campy about it.

also, neither of these guys can sing. at all. or rap, really, for that matter. and when they attempt either it comes across as more annoying than anything else. they also rely heavily on samples and that to me, too, is very annoying. at least no one can say that lmfao set out to make art.
