Human Bat!

Elmo Bannister was a brave, or foolish, man. Born in Oklahoma in 1911, he served his country as a paratrooper during WWII, and when he returned to civilian life, he made a career out of performing as a batwing stunt jumper at airshows and small airports. In 1944 he attempted to break the world record of 48 parachute jumps in a single day, at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, now known as Wright-Patt Air Force Base. He completed his goal of 50 jumps, but his joy was short-lived when it was discovered that a man in Cincinnati had made 52 jumps in a day in 1940 and another skydiver completed 75 leaps in 1941.

Abe C. Hagaman and his wife Queen visiting a cemetery.  Son of Taylor Hagaman and Mary Alice Wilson Hagaman.  Husband of  Queen Victoria Rule Blake Hagaman, daughter of James Rule and Ella Brubaker, whom he married in Catlettsburg, Kentucky in 1918.  Queen was the widow of Benjamin Blake who died in 1913. Abe was a worker in a rail car repair shop for Chesapeake and Ohio Railways.

Victoria Sargent Posegate, wife of Isaac Newton Posegate, daughter of James Sargent and Margaret Colwill Sargent. She lived in SW Ohio her whole life and was buried at New Vienna, Ohio.

Hermina Voigt died just a few days after this photo was taken, from bacterial meningitis.  She was 16 years old, the daughter of Rudolph C. Voigt and Bertha May Haberer Voigt of Easthampton, Massachusetts.

Ida and Isaac (Ike) Hagaman and their children, Pearl, Ruth (in Isaac’s arms), Susan, either George or Jim, Ben and Lee.  The Hagamans, also Hagerman, lived in Lawrence County, Ohio.

Joseph Kloer and his wife Susanna were immigrants to the US, arriving as newlyweds around 1880 and settling in Mishawaka, Indiana.

In 1910, Mr. and Mrs. Kloer returned to Germany to visit the families they had left behind, and decided to stay to enjoy an extended tour around Europe. 

They had planned to return to the United States in 1914 but then World War I broke out, and the Kloers were detained in Siberia. They couldn’t travel through Europe, and ultimately back home, until the  the war was over.  Peace was signed in 1919, and the Kloers began their journey home immediately. 

Their son, Frank Kloer, 2405 Spy Run avenue, an employee at the Centlivre Beverage plant in Fort Wayne, was expecting his parents home in a few days and they were on the last leg of the trip when the Pennsylvania railroad train they were on derailed near East Palestine, in Columbiana County, Ohio, on January 20, 1920.

Joseph Kloer was killed.  Susanna Kloer was injured, but not seriously.

Interment was in Concordia Cemetery.
