Despite the love and hard work that went into Artifice, it has become too much to manage due to real world circumstances, and I cannot afford to give Artifice precedence over those things. Artifice will be back next season, but in the meantime Artifice is on hiatus. What this means for members will be disclosed in the OOC, while non-members can contact the admin team here from this page.
I’d like to thank all current and former members—for the short while that Artifice was active it was truly wonderful to see the characters come alive through everyone’s writing. We hope to see you guys in New York City sometime soon.
This is an announcement to let everyone know that Artifice is officially on hiatus. Members have been given further insight into the specifics of this hiatus in the OOC, while non-members may contact us by going on to our main page. This is anticipated to be a temporary hiatus, as Artifice may be back around next season.
We’d like to thank all of our wonderful members, past and present, and we hope to see you all again in the not too distant future.

WALK THROUGH THE EVERLASTING FOG TO A WORLD UNLIKE YOUR OWN...
...there is no turning back.
Hidden behind a dens, impenetrable wall of fog lies Gravesend, Maine. The small town appears to be inconspicuous, but horrible, dark secrets lurk around every corner.
On the 21st of July 2015, Elaine Black, a high-ranking member of the High Council of witches, mysteriously disappeared in Gravesend. While initially, the Midnight Court opposed any kind of outside investigations, they eventually were forced to open the town's doors to the outside world for the first time in centuries. Witches from all over the country have come to investigate Black's disappearance, uncover the secrets of Asher Lake Coven, and find out what really is going on in the small, remote town.
WE DON'T FIGHT LIKE MEN. WE FIGHT LIKE GODS. WATCH US CONQUER.
2015. The use of illegal drugs is at an all time high. The rich and the famous crave the rush which false euphoria can bring — the requiem from the harsh white lights and cold stone diamonds nestled against slender throats and airbrushed fingers. Hosts give away crack cocaine in goody bags to their guests. Heroin is the ambrosia of gods and goddesses, of Hollywood heroes and American idols. Ecstasy is what smiles are made of; and Meth even has it’s own television show. Gambling is a champion’s sport: winner takes all. And so they h a v e.

Congratulations, STELLA! You have been accepted as your desired character, ISAIAH KAUFMAN! We felt your reasons for wanting to play Isaiah were very compelling, and we felt your musings were incredibly spot-on! Please be sure to follow our new member checklist once you have made your account.

Name (and/or Alias): Stella
Timezone: CST
Age: 17
Preferred Pronouns: she/her/hers
How would you describe your activity? How much time do you plan on devoting to this RP?:
It’s complicated. I have the ability to be on every day, but it’s the duration that’s in question. I work part-time on the weekends, so my availability then is a bit lower depending on how bad the restaurant needs me. As for the weekdays, it’s a toss-up. I’m in theatre at my school, so my activity during the week depends very much on whether I’m cast in a show or not. Altogether, I should be available for about four or five hours minimum each day during the school week and on the weekends.
Is there any subject matter(s) you personally wish to add to the content warning list?: No, you did an excellent job of covering anything that may trigger me.
Comments or Concerns: Just keep doing you and everything should go swimmingly.

Which character are you applying for?: Isaiah Kaufman
Why do you want to play this character?:
So my reasoning for wanting him stretches back to some time ago when I was scrolling through the tags and finding a good OC RP for me to dump an idea I had into, I ran across your group. Being the (somewhat) superficial person I am, I decided to wait it out for you to post bios, especially considering the fact that you had Adrien Brody as a possible FC. Everything after that is history; I read his biography and fell madly in love with the very idea of Isaiah, and found myself filling out the application form. There’s something in my that craves the idea of exploring someone who is so fundamentally human, but rejects all nuances of humanity. Isaiah’s almost comic fixation on being tragic (and then his transition into actually being tragic, like, ow) and different and Legendary (not the capital “L”) was astounding to me. He’s certainly unlike any character I’ve ever seen or written before, and that of course makes me want to write him even more.
Describe the future for this character. What are they motivated to accomplish or do? What are some short or long term goals they might have?:
Considering Isaiah’s belief system, I think his greatest priority is finding a reason to be. While simply aging and seeing what this ridiculous and always fallible life may have in store has worked for the past handful of decades of Isaiah’s continued existence, there’s an underlying craving for more– this helps to explain the sex and the drugs and all the eccentricities that can’t really be otherwise justified. That is, while Isaiah may have found a temporary motivation to continue to succeed in the battle for the Barrett’s paintings, he will ultimately find himself struggling to exist for any reason other than to do so in spite of himself.
He seems like someone who seems to have a bit of a sense of humor about his entire life; of course the druggie punk from Brooklyn would become a lawyer. Of course he’d fall for the daughter of a dead woman, and of course he’d find himself caught up in this legal battle whose outcome, he honestly couldn’t care less about. I think this is why Isaiah is so eccentric; he knows that his entire life is built on his own good fortune.
To be entirely honest, I find myself having a bit of a difficult time giving a straightforward answer to this question; Isaiah, due to many parts of his character (including but not limited to: his drug use, his belief system, and his own personal identity), is a character with many, many facets. This is a struggle for both me as a writer, and him as a person. As much as he wants to settle into a single identity or ideal, he knows that as soon as he does, he is doomed to get bored with it. So he doesn’t. His long term goal is, ultimately, to spend his entire lifetime living.
Para-sample:
Please pick FOUR of the character’s their personality traits and describe how those traits shape the character.
self-destructive: Isaiah’s self-destructiveness comes largely from a general sense of unreality. His belief system means that there is nothing in the world for him, that he creates the things around him. Thus, it would only make sense that Isaiah would also be driven to destroy. He causes harm to himself through drugs and drinking and recklessness not entirely because he enjoys any of those things (although he does, most of the time) but somewhat because of this innate need to be reminded of his own reality, of the power over his own existence (and thus the existence of everything else) he has been given.
It’s also not that deep at all. Superficially, Isaiah does the things he does to himself because for whatever reason, they keep him going. The highs, the trips, the drunkenness, it keeps him alive by bringing him close to death.
eccentric: Eccentricism, in its purest form, exists in a sort of vacuum, in which the exhibitor of the trait doesn’t recognize it. That is, Isaiah is truly eccentric because he sees sense in the senselessness of his ways. There is more than one way to skin a cat, and likewise, there is more than one way to cope with the underlying despair that Isaiah finds to be present in every waking moment. Calling it a coping mechanism wouldn’t be proper, though, mostly because he’s not coping with anything. Nothing has hurt him, besides himself. No, his eccentricism is a response to his own existence, a dare to the rest of the world to see him for what he really is. All that’s left, now, for Isaiah to find out himself who he really is.
brilliant: Isaiah’s eccentricism is somewhat deceptive, as it can make it easy to forget his intelligence, which was arguably the first trait he ever developed. He knows his intelligence, but doesn’t know what to do with it. In a strange way, Isaiah feels a certain responsibility to his intelligence, a responsibility which he sometimes feel is in question. He’s
Also include a brief drabble of your character answering the question: “What is art?“
Isaiah shifted in his chair. “Art? Art’s, – that’s easy.” He said, as if it really was. “It’s the things we hang in museums. I think it’s more about, uh, the experience than anything else.” Isaiah hadn’t yet convinced himself he could get out a proper answer. “You know, a dialogue. Between the creator and the viewer. The art’s a proxy.” His fingers began to drum anxiously on his thighs, some desperate attempt to expel as much nervous energy as possible. Nervous? No, that wasn’t the right word. He wasn’t nervous. Conflicted, maybe. But not nervous. “The artist has their own idea of what the art’s about, yeah? They can only bring it so far, though. Especially since most artists die before they become famous. So, the art, it –” It was supposed to speak to the observer in place of the artist, but there was no way Isaiah could say that with conviction. Not when he looked at dozens of paintings a day, and felt nothing at all in response to them. He never felt some divine voice speaking to him through the canvas, or some morse code message being tapped out to him through the marble. Art was supposed to be a cry into the vacuum of the human conscience, but Isaiah knew all too well that he lacked any conscience of which to speak. “It sits on the walls of museums or galleries or private collectors and gathers dust and value. Then, after a couple decades, it’s wiped off and sold as classical art. The way we live, it– it doesn’t permit a conversation with the art, because we don’t see the presence of the artist in it.” Now that he was saying something he believed in, the words came a bit easier, the thoughts more organized. “Art is all that’s left of that promise, then.” He said, crossing his arms. “Art’s a relic of that ideal. It’s a memory of a memory. A copy of a copy.”
Changes?: Nope!
Extra: I am so glad you included this, because I’ve acquired the habit of making a playlist for every character I audition for. The playlist is on a private post, which I had a little fun with formatting: [x].
Quick update for everybody--we’ve changed our theme and our main graphics! Please let us know if there’s any legibility issues or if there’s a glaring graphical error somewhere on our page. We may tweak some pages throughout the rest of this evening but as of right now the bulk of our graphics revamp is done!
This is an announcement regarding our application page as we have edited our application form a bit! We have changed our form to have TWO OPTIONS when it comes to the IC sample for both canon and original characters.
Applicants will be allowed to either write an in-character para-sample OR they will be allowed to write about four of their character’s headcanons along with a short drabble of their character answering the question: “What is art?”. We hope this gives applicants more expression in how they interpret the characters! As always, there is no word count requirement for any section of the application.
If there’s any concerns or questions regarding this update to our application form, please feel free to message us!
