Edgy Melon illustration that @myriamsaviniart did for me.
Melon: Birth of EVIL
We have long speculated how Melon grew up and what his family were like since his dad is a gazelle and his mother a leopard.
At first, Melonβs childhood seemed kinda niceβ¦ possibly too nice.
Despite Melon and his mom living in a tiny apartment as well as being social outcasts due to Melonβs parents being a cross-species marriage, Melonβs mom did all she could to make their apartment seem like a tiny dream castle.
Which is part of why Melonβs childhood was super creepy.
Melon felt like he was in a play where their apartment was the stage of the idyllic story about a mother and child. They did not talk much, but Melonβs mom would always smile at him like this:
Seems familiar?
Melonβs mom would never leave the apartment, telling her son that their neighbors were not very kind. Something Melon knew was true since he overheard said neighbors talk about the crazyΒ leopard lady who married a gazelle who was now missing.
Melonβs mom never talked about his dad who he had never known, and Melon never asked where he was.
So it is not so weird if Melon was a bit twisted to begin with. He got bullied in school for his weird genes, but what really bothered him was how much he wanted to kill them.
β¦ Geez.
But he didnβt do it for the simple reason that he was unsure how his mom would react. Not even that he did not want to upset her, he had NO IDEA how she would react, so he did nothing.
Melon always felt like he had no idea what kind of animal his mom was. He was sure that she loved him, but the fairy tale world she had created in their apartment required that they never spoke their mind.
Until the day Melon was asked by his teacher to find out the origin of his name, being told that naming a child was the first act of love a parent.
Asking that question opened up Pandoraβs Box. Melonβs mom looked at him for the first time with her true face, not her sweet-and-nice-meme one:
Holy SHIT.
And it getβs worse, since her explaining the origin of Melonβs name is SUPER twisted:
βMelons are not fruits nor vegetables. But they still taste good. You are not a carnivore nor an herbivore. But I still want you to live a life thatβs as sweet as melons.β
That was the first time Melonβs mom talked about him being a hybrid. But not only did she do it with the face of a meat eater, she sugarcoated his life. she made light of his situation as a mixed-gene animal who had a though life to look forward to. She wouldnβt accept his reality that she was to blame for by simply having had a child with a gazelle.
Melon got so frustrated that he attacked his mom with her flat-iron, finally telling her about how frustrating and unfair his life was.
AND it got worse:
Not only did Melonβs mom admit that she ate the gazelle that was Melonβs dad, she even stated that the reason to why she loved Melon was because he reminded her about how delicious her husband was
So Melon snapped and murdered his mother.
But not only that, he had learned enough from his mom to know how to get out of such situations without consequences.
Melon called the police, claimed that robbers killed his mom, and then gave the police the nice face his mom always made, the one that made Melon trust his mama till the day she had dropped her mask. And it worked even better for him since he is a gazelle, and the police in this world always assumes that herbivores are innocent. That has always been Melonβs greatest strength: To look nice and appear harmless when he is anything but that.
Not long after that, he killed his classmates and got away with it by smiling and looking like a gazelle.
@lithium223Β βyes someone finally put into words my thought on this chapterβ
Itβs an honor to serve.
@yumejin :Β βhell yeah this post made me appreciate melon a lot more ive already said this before but wow paru is a very skillful writer.β
Paru is good with characters. She can make them oddly lovable as well as extremely repulsive. Melon is probably one of the more unique manga villains of modern time, no wonder I get so many asks about him.
Iβm listening by Yun Huai Huang

My short comic about Haru and Melon, occurs after chap 149 :" The philosophy of pain".
