Fighting Games Appreciation Post - Because it's never a bad idea to do so
Fighting Games Appreciation Post - Because it's never a bad idea to do so
I can't now, but somebody add more.
Maybe the videos of deskillsage being zoned out, or moment 37?
You know what? I just wanted to post some pretty pictures, but you might be on to something.
We could use the reblogs to share our favourite FGC moments to try and lure more vict... More people in!
So, like meep suggested. This is Evo Moment 37.
Evo is this annual fighting game event where pro fighting game players gather each summer for the finals in whatever fitting game is currently hot. The games in my original post were actually this year's lineup!
Moment 37 was when Daigo Umehara (the Ken player in the above video) successfully parried every single hit of Chun-Li's super (played by Justin Wong) during the Street Fighter III: Third Strike tournament at Evo 2004 and eventually won the game. This requires very precise timing and if a single hit had landed Daigo would have lost as he had a slither of health left. As such, it is considered a very iconic moment in the FGC (the Fighting Game Community) and is forever talked about.
This is another very cool video I wanna share.
Basically the guy talks about how he wasn't very interested in fighting games but around the time Street Fighter IV came out he came across a video full of hype moments that peaked his interest and later proceeds to give suggestions on how to learn to appreciate fighting games and having fun while doing it.
Then there's Core-A-Gaming, having possibly produced the most extensive series of video essays on fighting games. His entire channel is worth a watch, I regularly watch his old videos again and again so I have a few suggestions.
This video attempts to better explain and analyse the oh-so-common reason as to why people don't play fighting games.
This is Corey's (the guy who owns the channel) personal favourite video where he analyzes the premise and the importance of the presence of the FGC.
He also interviewed a handful of female pro gamers on their experience as women in the FGC.
The FGC, because of its birth in the arcade scene and eventual move to consoles, which are considerably cheaper than building a gaming pc, has always been extremely diverse in terms of racial and social backgrounds, but is still struggling with female and LGBT representation. Things have been getting a lot better though, and one of our top players, Sonic Fox, is actually openly gay, non-binary and a furry, often competing in his furry suit, and he's one of the most respected and decorated players in the community.
Back to Core-A-Gaming, his most recent video sheds light on the Pakistani Tekken scene.
The upper echelon of Tekken pro players has been traditionally dominated by Koreans, but the Pakistani Tekken community has begun to do exceptionally well in recent years and they are constantly cheered on by the rest of their community, with Arslan Ash and KHAN spearheading Pakistan's rise to the heights of Tekken superstardom!
Then there's of course Maximilian Dood, the No. 1 YouTuber who specializes in fighting game content. He, along with Justin Wong and another YouTuber, Matt McMuscles, who is better known for his What Happened? series but still has tons of fighting game related videos, have all joined forces to create the Triple K.O. podcast.
A new episode comes out every other Tuesday!
Leon Massey is also one of my personal favourite FG YouTubers.
GekkoSquirrel mostly focuses on Guilty Gear so if you're into that you might like him
Arya is a Tekken-oriented YouTuber. Tekken is my personal favourite series so I like him for obvious reasons! He released a great analysis on every single Tekken 7 character's playstyle.
My final YouTube recommendation is Thorgi's Arcade. He makes these AMAZINGLY detailed retrospective series on fighting games. He's currently tackling Street Fighter in a multi part series but his magnum opus is the KOF one.
Tackling a series with FIFTEEN different entities is certainly no easy task. And that's not even taking into account all the spinoffs! Last year I fell head first into KOF and it's largely thanks to his series on it. He goes into detail about the inception, the characters, the development of the games and, of course, SNK itself, the company in charge of the games. This company has literally gone bankrupt a thousand times yet has consistently pulled itself back from the dead and continues to make KOF, among other fighting games and if this is not inspirational I don't know what is. In fact, the types they went bankrupt they still went ahead and made some of the best games in the series so yeah.
I'm sure there are MANY more I'm forgetting so I'm hoping others might chime in.
Misao: Don’t just stand there and talk to me like you know it all, you’re a big knucklehead! You’re telling me to forget Aoshi!? The reason I’m searching for him is because there is no way I can forget about him!
Kenshin: No! You won’t be able to make it!
MIsao: How is forgetting about the person I care for the most in the entire world suppose to ever make me happy!?

Classic Lara’s Canon Outftis
A list of outftis worn by Lara Croft during her adventures from 1996 to 2008 (yes I consider LAU part of the Classic timeline, get over it)
Classic 1.0 - TR1, Legend (Peru Flashback) - Tourquoise sleeveless letoard, brown short shorts, brown long boots, brown backpack, black belt & holsters, black fingerless gloves, hair tied in a braid, low in TR1, high in Legend. Often wears her trademark round rose sunglasses but not in-game. Braid is not properly implemented in the TR1 in-game model.
Croft Manor Sport 1.0 - TR1 (Croft Manor) - Light gray track suit pants, darker gray sports bra & matching high-waist spandex shorts, black wristbands, bare feet, hair tied in a low braid. Braid is not properly implemented in the TR1 in-game model.
Classic 2.0 - TRII, III - Same as Classic 1.0 but with a lower-cut neckline.
Croft Manor Sport 2.0 - TRII (Croft Manor) - Brown cargo pants, olive sleeveless crop top, brown boots, black belt, black fingerless gloves, hair tied in a low braid.
Wetsuit 1.0 - TRII (Oil Rig and the Maria Doria) - Grey / blue half-length Sola wetsuit with short sleeves, black belt & holsters, black fingerless gloves, brown backpack, bare feet, hair tied in a low braid.
Bomber Jacket - TRII (Tibet, Alaska) - Same as classic but with a dark brown bomber jacket worn over it.
Dressing Gown - TRII (Croft Manor) - Blue velvet dressing gown, hands and feet bare, hair tied in a low braid, dagger of Xian tied to her waist.
Croft Manor Sport 3.0 - TRIII (Croft Manor) - Brown camo pants, black sleeveless crop top, black boots, black fingerless gloves, brown backpack, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a low braid.
South Pacific Islands - TRIII (South Pacific Islands) - Green short shorts, white sports bra, brown boots, brown backpack, black fingerless gloves, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a low braid.
Area 51 - TRIII (Nevada, Channel Tunnel) - Same as Croft Manor Sport 3.0 but the pants are blue.
Catsuit 1.0 - TRIII (London, Paris) - Black full-body catsuit with elbow-length sleeves and low-cut neck, black boots, blak fingerless gloves, black belt & holsters, brown backpack, hair tied in a low braid.
Antarctica - TRIII (Antarctica) - White camo pants, classic leotard, orange RX Tech coat, black boots, brown backpack, black fingerless gloves, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a low braid.
Teen Lara - Last Revelation (Cambodia), Chronicles (Black Isle) - Green cargo shorts, white short-sleeved crop top, green sleeveless vest, brown boots, brown backpack, brown belt, bare hands, hair tied in high braided pigtails.
Classic 3.0 - Last Revelation, Chronicles - Same as the other two Classics but with an even lower (perhaps too low…) neck-cut and what appears to be a thong outline in the back of her shorts…? Worst version of the outfit.
Winter Camo - Chronicles (Russian Base) - Full body white / gray camo body suit, black boots, black winter gloves, white belt, dark gray snow hat, hair tied in a low braid.
Catsuit 2.0 - Chronicles (New York City) - Full body black catsuit that covers her entire body this time, black boots, black, fingerless gloves, black sunglasses, hair tied in a low braid, erapiece on right ear.
Denim - Angel of Darkness (Paris) - Blue jeans, denim jean long-sleeved jacket, black crop top, black boots, bare hands, hair tied in a low braid, black sunglasses (not in-game)
Camo Pants - Angel of Darkness (Louvre) - Green camo pants, black sleeveless crop top, black boots, black backpack, black fingerless gloves, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a low braid, black sunglasses (not in-game)
Camo Vest - Angel of Darkness (Prague) - Same as Camo Pants, but with a green sleeveless vest over it.
Camo Shorts - Angel of Darkness - Same as Camo Pants but with camo short shorts instead of pants.
Wetsuit 2.0 - Angel of Darkness (The Vault of Trophies) - Blue half-length wetsuit with short sleeves, black fingerless gloves black backpack, bare feet, knife tied to right ankle, hair tied in a low braid.
Legend - Legend - Brown short shorts, the shortest ones yet I think, brown short-sleeved crop top with very low neck cut, white sports bra worn underneath, black boots, black backpack, black fingerless gloves, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a high ponytail, earpiece.
Biker, No Jacket - Legend (Croft Manor) - Black leather pants, white long-sleeved leotard, unbottoned low (again, too low) neck line, black boots, black backpack, black belt & holsters, bare hands, hair tied in a high ponytail, earpiece.
Evening - Legend (Japan) - Black short satin dress with ridiculously plunging neckline and exposed back, black peep-toe sandal heels, black bangles on left hand, black necklace, fingernails painted dark red, regular backpack is modified and worn as a purse, hair is let loose, although she is technically wearing it ear-piece is not visible, possibly conealed by her hair.
Evening, Ripped - Legend (Japan) - Same as Evening exceot the dress in now ripped on both sides, exposing black lace floral-patterned boxers, heels are removed and feet are now bare, backpack is worn regularly, black belt & holsters, hair tied back in a high ponytail, earpiece is now visible. Side note: When wearing this outfit Lara’s idle standing animation is different. She now has her legs stuck to each other as opposed to her usual standing pose when wearing more conventional clothes for an adventure. She’s a Countess after all!
Winter - Legend (Kazakhstan, Nepal) - Brown pants, brown parka (top layer), blue long-sleeve wool shirt (mid layer), white long-sleeve buttoned shirt (bottom layer), black fingerless gloves, black boots, black backpack, hair tied in a high ponytail, earpiece.
Winter, No Coat - Legend (Kazakhstan) - Same as Winter but with parka removed, better showcasing the middle and bottom layers of the original outfit. Both the blue and white shirt also leave Lara’s midriff ever so slightly exposed, which seems like a weird design choice since it’s supposed to be a “Winter” outftit… The backpack also has an extra strap that goes over her upper chest, connecting the two arm straps together which is oddly not visible before removing the parka. It also raises the question how did she take the parka off after it cauhght fire without removing the backpack first but I digress :p
Biker - Same as Biker, No Jacket but with a red / black Ducati leather racing jacket worn over it.
Anniversary - Anniversary - Reimaged Classic outfit for the original game’s… well… anniversary! Same as the classic outftis but instead of a tourquoise leotard she now wears a light blue cotton sleeveless shirt. Like the original Classic, no low-cut neckline this time, shorts are however again shorter than usual, like in Legend.
Wetsuit 3.0 - Underworld (Mediterranean Sea) - Black / yellow long-sleeved wetsuit, shorter than the previous two and with a zipper that’s been left unzipped for… reasons? Bare hands and feet, black backpack, the strap from Kazakhstan is now visible on all Underworld outftis, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a high ponytail.
Jungle, Shorts - Underworld - Brown two-tone short shorts, now a bit longer than Legend’s and Anniversary’s, matching brown two-toned sleevelss crop top with a low-cut neckline and no white undershirt this time, black boots, black fingerless gloves, black backpack, black wristband on left arm, hair tied in a high ponytail.
Casual - Underworld (Croft Manor) - Brown two-tone pants, similar in design to Jungle, Shorts’ shorts, brown wool zippered shirt with black top underneath, black boots, black backack, black belt & holsters, bare hands, hair tied in a high ponytail.
Jungle, Heavy - Underworld (Southern Mexico, Andaman Sea) - Bottom half is the same as Casual, top half features a black long-sleeved leather jacket with a white top under it and black fingerless gloves, hair tied in a high ponytail. Again her midriff is exposed, more than Kazakhstan this time, once again defeating the purpose of the outfit, which this time is supposed to keep her covered from the rain…
Snow, Heavy - Underworld (Jan Mayen Island) - Black pants, dark blue puffy coat, black boots, black backpack, black winter gloves, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a high ponytail
Drysuit - Underworld (Arctic Sea) - Full body dark blue / light blue zippered (fully this time!) drysuit, black boots, black backpack, black belt & holsters, bare hands, hair tied in a high ponytail.
Casual Explorer - Underworld (Croft Manor) - Grey jeans, blue buttond shirt with sleeves rolled up to her elbows and white top underneath, brown boots, black backpack, black fingerless gloves, black wristband on right arm, black belt & holsters, hair tied in a high ponytail, earpiece returns one last time!
So, there you have it, these are the outftis Lara has chosen to wear over the years in her journeys across the globe!
P.S. In all outftis where she wears boots, she also wears white long socks along with them.

TW: Police Brutality
Α recap of what happened today in my neighbourhood by this gentleman.
Photos and videos are not mine but I'm hoping to share to international viewers what is going on in Greece, a country that prides itself as the birthplace of democracy but nowadays some don't seem to keen on retaining it.
Translation:
What happened today [in Athens, Greece] is that the police showed up and tried to fine a family with two kids and three adults sitting on a bench.
As the family was trying to explain that they had all the proper credentials to move about and weren't breaking any laws, people around started complaining.
Various people tried to explain to the police that they had no reason to fine these people. The police retaliated with violence. They started beating up a young man with a baton. [Video I posted earlier]
The policemen proceeded to call for backup and about 50 policemen showed up on Nea Smirni's central square; 25 motorcycles with two policemen riding on each.
People got scared. Some tried to seek refuge to a nearby park and the policemen proceeded to maniacally run around in circles on their bikes while in the park, beat more people up and eventually arrested a total of nine the are being held at Greek police HQ.
[Note: the headline falsely reads that 30 people attacked a single officer, that's a lie]
The police in question spread out trying to terrorise people for no reason, and as a result dozens of people gathered at Nea Smirni's central square to complain against police brutality.
[The Sign Reads: Keep Cops out of our Neighbourhoods - Nea Smirni's Residents Open Assembly]
All major news networks in Greece FALSELY reported that thirty people assaulted one police officer. This never happened. NEVER. That's all lies.
---------------
What followed after is police breaking up the peaceful protest with tear gas and flash bang grenades.
As you can see, people unrelated to the protest were still around, including little kids!
This is a photo of a 15-year-old who was hit by piece of one of the flash bang grenades. Fifteen!
I was around the area at the time. I was only mildly affected by the tear gas but it was still very real. Greek news networks were meanwhile reporting that "anarchist protesters" attacked the policemen with bottles which, you guessed it, is also a lie!
I'm still puzzled, extremely irritated and also very concerned about what is to follow.
Also, let me point out that my neighbourhood is as stereotypically bourgeois as it gets so while stuff like that are not news for people in other areas of Athens / Greece it's not a usual event for Nea Smìrni.
The police in Greece have been out of control for a while now but now they're getting increasingly more and more dangerous with more and more power allocated to them from the ones in charge. This is honestly not gonna end well I'm afraid.
Please share.

Favourite Fighting Video Games of All Time
Ever since I was a kid and started playing video games I was immediately drawn to the fighting genre. The colourful characters, the fun co-op gameplay up against friends and the ridiculous stories kept me coming back for more.
Now, I want to honour some of the most influential and beloved games in the genre’s history in this little tribute post.
Tekken 2 - PlayStation, 1996
Tekken 2 offered bright colours, a large roster of characters with fluid and varied movements, beautiful stages, a complex type of gameplay that was, however, very beginner-friendly as well as the very innovative, for the time, practice mode.
Score: 8.9 / 10
Soul Edge - PlayStation, 1996
Soul Edge offered fluid character movement and gorgeous graphics, including lighting effects as characters swung their weapons around. Gameplay is really fun and the charactrs are pretty cool and all have unique stories and backgrounds. The intro remains to this day as one of the most iconic in fighting video game history.
Score: 8.9 / 10
Tekken 3 - PlayStation, 1998
One of the most succcesful fighting video games ever, as well as the fourth most succesful PlayStation game in general, Tekken 3 offered some great music and sick-looking graphics. Gameplay became more detailed and fast-paced and many veterans (nowadays) of the series mae their debut in 3.
Score: 9.6 / 10
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - PlayStation, 1998
Featuring some of the most innovative gameplay in the series up to this point, Alpha 3 is the second re-release of Street ighter Alpha, featuring even more characters than ever before and even including different gampleay variations from previous games in the series.
Score: 9.3 / 10
SoulCalibur - Dreamcast, 1999
SoulCalibur is considered one of the very few arcade games that were even more impressive when release for hoem consoles. featuring beautiful graphics and refining the now iconic gameplay introduced in Soul Edge, SoulCalibur is considered one of the best Dreamcast games ever made, and one of the best fighting video games in general.
Score: 9.8 / 10
Tekken Tag Tournament - PlayStation 2, 2000
Tekken Tag Torunament brought even prettier graphics to the table as well as bringing back almost every single Tekken character that existed up to that point, for a little 2 Vs. 2 action!
Score: 8.5 / 10
DOA2: Hardcore - Playtation 2, 2000
Expanding the original’s gameplay and game modes like never before, Hardcore is one of the many re-releases of the original Dead or Alive 2 game. Stages and character model all look amazing and the series’ trademark gameplay was probably at it’s peak in this installment. Bad English translation and breast physics aside, Dead or Alive 2 proved that the series was able to compete with the best.
Score: 9.1 / 10
Dead or Alive 3 - Xbox, 2001
Boasting a unique attention to detail, Dead or Alive 3 arrived straight after 2 to solidify Dead or Alive’s position in the industry. Dead or Alive 3 was the first in a line of Xbox-exclusive titltes in the franchise and it went on to become one of the most succesful Xbox fighting games ever and one of the most succesful in it’s own franchise.
Score: 8.7 / 10
Virtua Fighter 4 - PlayStation 2, 2002
By 2002 Virtua Fighter was already known for always looking pretty, but 4 knocked it out of the park! Gameplay became more refined and complex than ever before, offering a really handy tutorial in order to get players prepared for some of the most intricate battles in fighting game history!
Score: 9.4 / 10
SoulCalibur II - PlayStation 2 / GameCube / Xbox, 2003
The most succesful entry in the franchise, SoulCalibur II refined it’s core mechanics and graphics and also introduced new characters along with a new trend in the genre; guest charaters. SoulCalibur II is one of the most accessible games in the genre, making it pretty easy for newcomers to pick up the game and start mastering its mechanics right away.
Score: 9.3 / 10
Tekken 5 - PlayStation 2, 2005
Nerfing many of the new mechanics and changes introduced in Tekken 4, Tekken 5 was sort of a “back-to-basics” kind of game, which was perfect as it came right around the series 10th anniversary! Fast-paced gameplay, customizable characters, lots and lots of characters and a ton of modes to enjoy. Tekken 5 was a hit!
Score: 8.8 / 10
SoulCalibur III - PlayStation 2, 2005
Gorgeous stages set across Europe, Africa and Asia in 1590 A.D., a colourful cast of charaters and fun, fast-paced gameplay. SoulCalibur III continued the streak of very solid games that had been going steady ever since the original in 1996, a feat not many franchises can boast to have accomplished.
Score: 8.6 / 10
Dead or Alive 4 - Xbox 360, 2005
Dead or Alive 4 kickstarted the (then) new generation of consoles in the best way possible. Gameplay was further refined, the roster was balanced and online battles were included, a novelty feature at the time.
Score: 8.5 / 10
Virtua Fighter 5 - PlayStation 3, 2007
The series’ core mechanics reached their pinnacle in this installemnt. The logic behind the core gameplay remains the same and, in theory, it’s not too complicated, but it is in fact much deeper, and requires much more precision and focus to excel at it; Virtua Fighter 5 is a game for hardcore fighters.
Score: 8.5 / 10
SoulCalibur IV - Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3, 2008
Boasting superb visuals, a very extensive character creation mode, SoulCalibur came back with a bang in the form of SoulCalibur IV. Players had been expecting online play ever since SoulCalibur III and with IV, their wishes were finally granted. Gameplay is, as usual, pretty accessible but can still challenge even the most seasoned veterans with an array of offline challenge modes. The soundtrack is also worth noting as it is amazing.
Score: 8.5 / 10
Street Fighter IV - Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3, 2009
Making a glorious return after a decade of absence, Street Fighter IV returned to bring back it’s roster of colourful world warriors on the scene. Creating a splendid mix of old and new mechanics, Street Fighter was officially back in bussiness!
Score: 9.4 / 10
Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition - Xbox 360 / PlayStation 3, 2012
Mortal Kombat is at the same time a continuation and a reboot to the series, combining nostalgia and a return to form with new gameplay mechanics and even more brutal aesthetics than ever before, and Komplete Ediiton includes all previously-released DLC along with the base game. Mortal Kombat achieved a unique triumph in the department of story, a game aspect that is usually overlooked or staright up ignored when it comes to fighting games, and set a golden standard for the industry ever since, with more and more deelopers attempting to flesh out their universe with a cohesive story mode, all thanks to Mortal Kombat.
Score: 8.8 / 10
Mortal Kombat X - PlayStation 4 / Xbox One, 2015
Coming in with a more cmplex and varied gameplay than ever before Mortal Kombat X became one of the most succesful games in the franchise. Story was once again great with a very good plot, script and performances by the voice actors.
Score: 8.6 / 10
Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition - PlayStation 4, 2018
After response for the base Street Fighter V was lukewarm, the Arcade Edition rerelease came as a breath of fresh air by fleshing out the gameplay and reinstating the long-awaited Arcade mode!
Score: 8.7 / 10
Mortal Kombat 11 - PlayStation 4 / Xbox One, 2019
Mortal Kombat 11 came with a more slow-paced type of combat than what players were used to up to then as well as having a very handy tutorial mode and the superb story mode players have to expect from Mortal Kombat by now.
Score: 8.6 / 10
