lawyeir :
he wasn’t the type to flee from his responsibilities so easily . he wasn’t one to flee at all , really , but there were certain circumstances that could push him to the brink and sending him teetering far too close to the edge for his liking . this was one of them : celestine incessant chattering about what she wanted from him and how she wanted to go about doing it had him tearing at his hair . he sat now at his desk , head rested in his palm and nails dug into his scalp , voice right with frustration , however much he attempt to conceal it . ❝ i hope you don’t mind my saying this , but it must be said . you are aware that what you’re asking of me is very difficult , aren’t you ? ❞

it wasn’t possible to hold back an amused chuckle because truly, he ought to know better by now. she wasn’t one to be content with just what she could be given, she wanted everything and then some more, just because she could do such thing. the world wouldn’t be enough and why should it? why settle when one could simply take it all? though perhaps she ought to have some mercy on her poor lawyer, he did do his best every time. which is what she payed him for but still. “ my dear matthew, of course i do. but i wouldn’t ask if i didn’t have complete and utter faith in your excellent capabilities to give me what i request. and i do so need it to be just like this, you know i am very particular about my contracts and you are the only one i trust to get it right. ” who knew, perhaps some flattery would make him more inclined to do what she requested without more protest. if not, celestine had plenty of other things up her sleeve.

“We are allies, my dear, which can be a good deal more effective.”
“I hope he proves to be perfect, but I rather doubt it.”
“He was too like his mother, and a nastier woman never drew breath.”
“Nothing makes you hungrier or more tired than grief.”
“You do seem very well informed on this family’s private affairs.”
“Did it make you feel better?”
“Please, don’t speak that man’s name; we are about to eat.”
“Oh, good, let’s talk about money.”
“Every mountain is unclimbable until someone climbs it; so every ship is unsinkable until it sinks.”
“I will never be happy with anyone else as long as you walked the earth.”
“So what? I have plenty of friends I don’t like.”
“Oh, don’t worry, there are plenty of hours in the day. And of course I’ll have the weekend.”
“Sometimes you have to be hard on yourself.”
“Well I hope we’re in control of something, if only ourselves.”
“I must strive to be worthy of the task I have been set.”
“You are quite wonderful, the way you see room for improvement wherever you look.”
“We can’t have him assassinated. I suppose.”
“Oh my Lord, listen to that! It’s like the cry of the banshee!”
“What in God’s name are you doing down here at this hour?”
“I wouldn’t touch that thing with a ten foot pole!”
“I don’t know. I did everything that you said. I promise.”
“Now, this may come as a surprise but I feel I must say it all the same.”
“They’re all so excited, they won’t care where I am.”
“For now, God knows it’s enough that I can kiss you.”
“Are you quite sure you won’t regret it?”
“You’ve lived your life and I’ve lived mine. And now it’s time we lived them together.”

moodboard: celestine-séraphine desrosiers (not for reblogging purposes)
She is kind and very beautiful. But she can be so cruel and it comes so suddenly and such birds that fly, dipping and hunting, with their small sad voices are made too delicately for the sea.
— Ernest Hemingway
barroe:
‘ i question his intentions, milady. ’
the invitation does tempt a smile: barrow of old would surely have taken it as permission to gossip until his throat ran dry. his hands remain at his sides, thumbs parallel with the seams of his trousers, and his fingers twitching a shade with the repressed urge to speculate.
‘ i wouldn’t reward him with a lick of your time. ’
“ whose intentions aren’t questionable when they knock on my door? ”
no one came here just for a cup of tea and a nice chat. except every now and then some of her friends that shared her profession, but otherwise it was just used for her business. no use mixing personal and private, it always ended in tears at some point. but some intentions were more questionable then others and if her butler already found them questionable, something was bound to be off about the man at the door.
“ but i trust your judgement. go and turn him away, and tell him to not bother coming by again without a name. i doubt he can offer me anything if he cannot even give me something as simple as a name. ”
barroe:
‘ there is a man to see you, your ladyship. he’s declined to give his name. ’
at the start of his tenure with lady desrosiers, thomas might’ve delivered such an announcement with an undertone of judgment, of moral superiority. he is, after all, an old dog learning new tricks — it isn’t so easy as turning up with a promise to trust readily.
with time, his prudence turns to a feeling unsorted (protectiveness, personal care), friendlier, and he puts it to generous use under her employ.
he wants to say i don’t like the look of him, but offers, instead, ‘ shall i tell him to call again later? ’

“ how terribly rude. sounds like trouble and if i think it’s trouble, it must be. ”
it wasn’t unusual for her male visitors to give out fake names - though really, they fooled no one. certainly not thomas, her butler knew more about her affairs than most. even more than her sister. perhaps a bit dangerous to have him know so much but she was very fond of him and liked to think she was a good and generous employer deserving of loyalty. he certainly had her trust by now, after a bit of a rough start when he became butler.
no doubt both of them knew no name rarely meant a nice mystery, though there were a few exceptions. shame exceptions were such a rare thing. and she refused to see the man and judge for herself, not if he was so rude not to give a name.
“ what do you make of this rude man, thomas? worth the trouble or more trouble than it’s worth? do speak freely. ”
