This is one of Choo Beng Teong's bird studies. Choo is actually a good watercolourist, able to bring his subjects to life. But this is one of his early studies. His better ones include a lush background with his subject in its natural environment. This is a plain white background which doesn't do his subject justice. The price of RM1,000 is probably fair for this piece if you're one of his fans.

You know that oils are expensive. So why the hell did you draw such a common subject using such a common composition on such a large canvas that you have to sell the work at RM15k just to recoup your loss?

I really dislike still life paintings like this. It’s so artificially-arranged and tells nothing about the owner of the objects or about the painter.

This is probably from one of the painting mills in China.

The seller of this painting is a cynical asshole who doesn’t know who Salleh Dawam is but is trying to cash in on his name. The asshole even misspelled Salleh Dawam’s name as "Dawan". 

Salleh Dawam is a watercolourist who specialises in portraitsand landscapes. He’s actually pretty good. 

So this still life of flowers is just one of his practice paintings. And definitely not worth the RM4,500 the asshole is trying to scam for it.

This is a watercolour falsely attributed to Tew Nai Tong to increase its value.

The signature says Nai Tong 94 but TNT stopped working in watercolours and switched to oils by that time.

Besides which, TNT's signature has a bold crossbar on the T, unlike this signature.

This is yet another IPWIS (I Paint What I See) painting by Chong Hon Fatt.

(The world is full of IPWIS painters who focus on craft at the expense of composition and concept. Why? Because composition and concept are often beyond their comprehension.)

The artist stood on a hill to the side of Kek Lok Si temple and painted exactly what he saw. This is pretty much what any tourist with a camera can do. A real artist would add something of himself or an original style to a make a work personal. But IPWIS painters can't.

Which begs the question, why do IPWIS painters continue to have the audacity to sell their paintings? After all, you wouldn't pay money for a tourist photo, so why would you pay anything for a tourist painting?

Azman Yusof is actually quite an accomplished portrait and figure painter working in oils and acrylics. 

He shows excellent craft, but displays no originality in composition and concept. All his work seems designed for commercial sale.

He didn't invest anything of himself in this one. So I'm pretty sure I wouldn't invest RM20k in it.

Rafiee Ghani has a long history of producing paintings that look like he was high on weed when he painted them.

This is a truly sad piece. The subject is interesting and reminds me of the 19th century European traveller painters like Jean-Léon Gérôme who captured the prayers of muslims in mosques.

The artist has taken great pains to paint the ornate doorway as finely as he can. But he is clearly an amateur. His brushstrokes are bland and this is evidenced on the clothing of the men, the uniformity of the lighting and badly skewed angle of the composition.

But what kills me is that before the paint dried, it was accidentally smudged. I saw this painting with my own eyes and it has an exposed patch of white canvas over the left shoulder of the old man seated against the wall.

Saw this for sale at RM2,500. It shows Craft, but it completely misses out on two of the important Cs. Concept and Composition.

The artist has focused on his brush control but gave no thought to what he was painting or why he was painting it.

I suspect he took a photo while seated on the left passenger side and decided to paint directly from the photo. The subject of the highway was probably for convenience.

It is therefore a practice-piece by the artist.
