Thank you for reading! "DEADLOCK" is the first story in an anthology of detective stories I've been planning with my friends Shiro and Fuumi for some years now. The script was written by me, Shiro and Fuumi did the storyboard and final effects together. Shiro did the sketching/panelling, and Fuumi did the lining. I did the base colours as well. The larger project -- Detection Club -- consists on creating 10 different detective comics of completely different mystery sub-genres: it's a love letter to the genre and a reflection of its tropes. DEADLOCK is our "Classic" Mystery story, with Jack being our "Great Detective", Sherlock Holmes espy. Next week, I think I will post the first chapter of the original comic my friends and I have been agonizing over and working at really slowly for a long time. It's just the first act of a three-part story, and probably not super exciting, but it's been made with a lot of love, sweat and tears and I'm very proud of what we have so far. I'm excited to finally show a bit of it...
The start of the year was rough, but I was able to meet with friends and had a wonderful time at the TWST Seasonal Memories exhibit today despite months of chaos...I'm really lucky to be surrounded by such kind and wonderful people!
Summary: Azul tries once more to get Jamil to consider transferring to Octavinelle. Jamil has a different suggestion.
For Ashenviper Week 2026, Day 1: Dorm

âI just think you should take some time to consider it.âÂ
Azul smiled across the table at Jamil, hands folded neatly in front of him. An icy glare stared back at him in response, something Azul had grown very used to and quite fond of with every passing day the two spent together.Â
Jamil tapped his pen against the papers in front of them â schoolwork for their group project. He wasnât sure how heâd let Azul convince him to work together on a project that would require seeing more of each other outside of the required class time, but, there they were. âSo youâve said several times now,â he grumbled. âYou canât honestly expect me to leave my position of Vice Housewarden just to come to Octavinelle and be a regular, run-of-the-mill student?â
Azul chuckled. âOh, you and I both know, titles aside, you're anything but run-of-the-mill, Jamil. Besides, who's to say Iâm not in the market for a new vice housewarden, myself? Jade can be oh so troubling, you know.â
Jamil crossed his arms and leaned back in his chair. âYeah? Youâd just toss out everything youâve worked together to build with the twins without a second thought?â
âIâll have you know I give all my choices several thoughts. You clearly already have a stellar resume in that regard, after all.â
ââŠNo way. Youâre bluffing, for sure.â
Azulâs smile only widened. âThink so?â
âDefinitely. You of all people wouldnât dare crossing the twins so carelessly to make an enemy of them. Either youâre bluffing, or the three of you have some slimy, over-complicated scheme going on behind the scenes.â
âWell, well, how very cautious of you,â Azul said, idly flipping through the pages of the textbook in front of him. âI suppose you are in Scarabia for a reason. Still, you canât blame me for toying with hypotheticals. Even if I couldnât risk putting you in the vice husewardenâs seat, I could guarantee youâd be in high ranks. Octavinelleâs students would look to you in the same way they look to Floydââ
âI donât want that.â
ââthe power may be unofficial, but that doesnât make it ineffective.â
Jamil rolled his eyes. ââŠnothing would stop me from challenging you to a housewardenâs duel, you know,â he said, a grin forming on his face. âMaybe Iâll come in and take it all for myself.â
Azul remained undeterred. âOh? Well, youâre certainly welcome to try. I promise I wonât hold it against you when you lose.âÂ
He winked, and Jamil pretended to be too focused on sipping from his glass of water to notice.
â...At any rate,â Jamil set his glass down and met Azulâs eyes. âIâm not transferring, and I never will. You donât need to waste your time with your incessant asking. You and I both know itâll never happen.â
âI canât help that Iâm an ambitious man,â Azul sighed. âBut I suppose, for now, I will settle for cherishing our time together as classmates.â
âUghâŠâ Jamil leaned on the table and rubbed his temples. â...Canât you just ask me to dinner or something? Like a normal person?â
Azul, for once, was silent. His eyes widened, his jaw dropped, and his cheeks flushed. He stared at Jamil, who, once again, locked his own stare back down at his glass of water.
â...I⊠Ahem, uhâŠâ Azul fidgeted with his bowtie, which suddenly felt all too tight. âIs⊠Is that something you would⊠Be interested in?â
âWhoâs to say?â Jamil asked, a tiny smirk playing on his lips as Azul squirmed. âMaybe Iâm just toying with hypotheticals.â
Azul cleared his throat again. âWell. It⊠Doesnât have to stay hypothetical, does it? I would say that, ah, dinner plans are far less of an outlandish commitment than transferring dorms, no?â
Jamil shrugged. âPerhaps. I wouldnât know, seeing as I havenât been invited.â
Azul frowned as he watched Jamilâs smirk grow wider, realizing that Jamil was in fact relishing in the moment of making Azul spell it out for him⊠But, some things were worth the temporary moments of humiliation. âHow about tonight, then? Stay a while longer, after we finish our work for the evening, and Iâll treat youâŠ?â
Jamil rested his chin in his hand and relished at Azulâs increasingly flustered face. âHow generous. I suppose it would be nice not to have to cook for myself tonight. But⊠Iâll still have toââ
âWeâll put together something extra for you to take home to feed Kalim.â
Jamil closed his eyes and sighed. His shoulders relaxed, and a more genuine smile spread across his face as looked over at Azul again. âYou really do prepare for everything, hm?â He reached across the table and gave Azulâs hand a squeeze. âAlright, fine,â he said, as if this whole setup wasnât literally his own suggestion mere moments ago. âItâs a date.â
Azul let out a sigh of relief. Maybe embarrassing himself for the sake of a genuine request here and there was worth it, sometimes.
