this was a lot for them. dixie never ever expected to be in this situation with arty but it was obvious she’d always had some sort of feeling toward him. something that wasn’t exactly always friendly but she never wanted to accept it. she pushed the feelings away in fear of ruining their friendly or losing him, which was the last thing she wanted. and yet, after her very embarrassing moment at the bash, she almost did lose him. she hated that and she was more than thankful that her best friend had come to his senses. she rubbed her thumb against his cheek, her stomach flipping as he kissed her back. her whole body felt as if it was fire and she was more than excited that this was happening. once they broke the kiss, she leaned against him and closed her eyes, a wide smile glued to her lips. she nodded her head, “well, i’m glad it’s out in the open now.” she opened her eyes as he pulled his head back and she bit down on her bottom lip, her hand slipping to the back of his neck and playing with the ends of his hair. “if you want me to be, yes.” her eyes were glued to his for a moment and she leaned up again, leaving another kiss on his lips. she pulled back and flashed him a smile, “will you stay with me tonight?”

“I think a lot of people will be,” Arty teased her with a smile. He could only imagine the amount of shit they were going to get for finally getting together. People had only been telling them they were meant to be for as long as he could remember. And now it was finally happening. “Yes, yes I do.” Arty was grinning like a fool. He couldn’t remember the last time he had been this happy about a woman. When he was with Jenny, things were good, but there weren’t always the sparks that flew between them. They had agreed over a year ago that they were better off friends and had certainly remained that way. They had been together for quite some time and he had been with a handful of others, but no one had ever made him feel like he was about Dixie right now. “I will,” he nodded his head at her question, “Of course I will,” his heart was racing a thousand miles a minute in his chest. “Anything you want.” And it wasn’t a lie. “I’m beginnin’ to wonder just how crazy we are to not have seen any of this until now.”

“pleasure doing business with ya!” reese called out after the man who was grumbling to himself about losing a hundred bucks to the woman. he was sulking as he left, but reese was smirking to herself about beating the jerk. he’d crashed into a old woman on the sidewalk and didn’t even try to help her pick up the things he’d caused her to drop, resulting in reese helping the woman. so when he went into the bar reese saw her chance to have a little fun with him. and after betting him a hundred bucks that she could beat him at a game of pool, she found herself a hundred dollars richer and feeling generous. settling herself at the bar, she ordered her drink and turned to the person next to her. “i’ll buy you a drink if you keep me company...sound like a deal?” she grinned, one brow quirking up. @tupeloextras

Arty didn’t typically end up at the bars alone, but it wasn’t unusual for him to run into someone he knew. He was sitting at the bar, sipping on a drink, waiting to notice a friend of his. Any friend. Arty wasn’t picky who he spent his time with - well, maybe so since he had grown fond of the idea of kissing Dixie and wanted to do it again - and again. As many times as he could, but he knew she was busy and didn’t want to go and bother her. When a blonde popped into the seat next to him, a large grin spread across his lips. “Reese’s Pieces,” one of his closest friends and not to mention, she was one hell of a story teller. “Of course I don’t mind keepin’ you company. I feel like I haven’t seen you in a long time.” Arty admitted to her, “What have you been up to?”

“god, i just want my pizza.” benny ranted, dramatically. the delivery driver was running behind and he was starving. of course, he was the only one running the desk and so it wasn’t like he could leave to go get it himself. someone had to be here. he didn’t get annoyed with a lot but food wasn’t something he really messed around with. as the bell dinged and indicated someone came in, he jumped up. “aw, shit. tell me you brought something edible, man. i’m starving. the pizza man is out there running behind and i’m hungry as hell. i think my stomach might eat itself. hey, is that possible? do you think my stomach could just eat itself? i’m sure someone’s died like that…right?”

Arty’s lips were already sporting a grin as Benny was worried about his stomach eating itself. “Do I look I go anywhere without bringin’ some snacks? I mean, I don’t want to worry about my stomach goin’ and doin’ the same thing.” He shook his head. “No one wants their stomach to eat itself and even if it doesn’t, I don’t even want to take that chance.” Arty held out a plastic bag full of a variety of goodies. “Take your pick,” he held out the bag for Benny, “I got all sorts of things in here. Whatever tickles your fancy, you get first pick.”

davis smirked as he laid eyes on arty, “hey, hey! i haven’t seen you since the halloween party and you know what i saw at the halloween party? you and my sister locking lips. man, i told you that you two were bound to happen, did i not?” he liked being right and he liked shoving it in peoples faces too, which is exactly what he was doing right. “so, how’d that go, huh? you two plannin’ the wedding yet?” he teased him. he really just wanted the two of them to be happy and as long as they were happy, he was too.

He knew the moment Davis found out about him kissing his sister, he was going to give him a hard time about it. It was simply what Davis had been doing for as long as he had known Dixie’s twin. “Hey yourself,” he knew that smirk on Davis’ face and was only prepared to get the worst I told you so in the books. “I know you told me,” he shook his head, “Actually,” Arty admitted foolishly, “we are takin’ it slow. I - I really didn’t think it was a good idea at first and we didn’t talk for a whole week,” he was giving Davis the short version, “long story short, everyone was right and we are actually in love with each other.”

dixie just never thought out of everyone, arty would hurt her but she also shouldn’t have expected him to feel the same way. standing here in front of him, she honestly had no idea what to expect. she figured it was just going to be an apology, which she would definitely accept because he was her best friend at the end of the day. she nodded her head along to what he was saying, her eyebrows furrowing. as he continued, she could tell where this was going and her stomach started twisting with hope and excitement. i do love you. the words echoed over and over again in her head. she probably paused way longer than she should’ve but she was trying to figure out the right thing so say and do. him admitting his feelings really wasn’t something she expected but that didn’t it mean it went by unappreciated. she dropped her arms and stepped toward him, a sigh leaving her lips. “you’re an idiot.” she breathed out and playfully punched his arm, a smile growing over her lips. “but i love you too. you know that.” she breathed out, her hand reaching up to cup his cheek. she pushed herself up on her toes and connected their lips for the second time ever, her heart racing in her chest.

He didn’t know how Dixie was going to react. Confessing his love for his best friend was not exactly on his bucket list. Arty had always known he cared for Dixie and loved Dixie, he just never imagined that he would suddenly come to the realization that he was in love with his best friend. It was straight out a movie and while Arty wasn’t the brightest crayon in the box, he tried to have some grasp on reality. As Dixie was calling him an idiot, he had half a second where he thought he had gone and ruined everything between them. Then came the playful punch on his arm and like clockwork, the corners of his lips were growing to match her own smile. She was only messing with him. And it’s not like she was wrong. He was an idiot. But he was her idiot. Arty lifted his hand to cover her own as she brought it up to his cheek, the warmth of her hand had his head tilting toward it. Arty couldn’t even get a word in before their lips met. For the second time ever. His other arm wrapped around her waist and this time, he didn’t pull back from the kiss. Not until it was too hard for him to breathe. His lungs screamed at him for a few moments longer than they would have deemed necessary, but he didn’t want to let go of her just yet. “I mean,” he breathed, resting his forehead against her own, “I knew you loved me, but I just didn’t know you loved me like that. I didn’t even know it.” And everyone else did but the two of them were hellbent on not listening to anyone else. “So,” his tongue flicked against his lips and he pulled his head back, “I mean, does this make you my girlfriend or something?”

dixie hated that she hadn’t talked to arty. she missed him but he honestly didn’t know what to do. she didn’t know what to say to him and she felt bad that she’d ignored him but then again, he didn’t seem to be making an effort to talk to her either. she felt stupid for even making the move but she wasn’t in her right mind at the time anyways. she’d had a couple of drinks and she made the move in hopes that it would work out in her favor. she didn’t even realize how much she liked him until he’d said it was a bad idea.

she’d replayed the moment a lot in her head and her heart ached. she was more than embarrassed. she was hurt. she lost her best friend and someone she really loved. she groaned at the thought as she sat on the couch. she was racking her brain on how to fix things. maybe she could blame it on the alcohol or maybe she could just apologize.

she held her coffee cup between her hands, staring off into space. that was until she heard the music outside. she furrowed her eyebrows and pushed herself up toward the window. she peeked outside and her eyes landed on her best friend. she bit down on her bottom lip and slowly walked out out her front door. she crossed her arms over her chest defensively, “what is it?” she asked.

When Dixie came out, he thought he might get a slightly warmer greeting from her, but that was the idiocy in him telling him that. Realistically, her stance was more than appropriate for his actions. He had told her the kiss was a mistake and they spent the rest of the night in an awkward silence. Lowering the speaker from his hands, he turned it down before setting it down on the law mower and hopping off of the machine to approach her. “Look,” he swallowed hard. Arty had never done a romantic gesture of this size before. By the time he realized he wanted a relationship with someone, they were already gone and well, if he was being honest, no one had ever compared to Dixie. “I was a really idiot the other night,” and he knew neither of them should be surprised by the matter, “I’ve been wrackin’ my brain tryin’ to figure out how to make this up to you. To make twenty plus years up to you.” All those years he brushed off the comments of being in love with Dixie off. He had wanted to entertain the idea, but ruining their friendship? It would never be worth the risk. Except, their entire friendship was on the line and well, Arty was here to go big or go home. “I - I thought that kiss was a mistake,” he ran his head through his hair, “but really, no I mean really, I was just too blind to see it. I haven’t been able to stop thinkin’ about it all week and Dixie,” he shook his head, his shoulders nearly reaching his knees as he let out a sigh, “Dixie all those people were right, I’ve been in love with you and I just - I’ve never seen it and I - I am so sorry and willin’ to do anythin’ to make this all up to you. Because I do - I do love you.”

It had been a whole week without talking to Dixie. A week without his best friend was more than Arty had ever been able to manage. A day? Or two? Sure, they were busy. But a week? And all because of a kiss that happened at Monster Mash. Arty brushed it off, at least he did at first. There was nothing more serious than friendship going on between them. That’s what he had been telling people his entire life. It wasn’t until he tossed and turned the entire night, imagining her soft lips brushing up against his. The look of embarrassment that flashed in her eyes as he told her it was a bad idea. His body shuddered with the awkward tension that lingered between them the rest of the night. A feeling they had never had with one another.

And as that next morning went on, Arty came to the realization all on his own. He didn’t know where it came from, but in the midst of eating his breakfast, which didn’t consist of much when he was hungover, he felt like someone slapped him with a bag of bricks.

He was in love with Dixie Smith.

Arty had never realized it before. People, left and right, told him that they were in love with each other and well, he hated to admit that he was wrong but he had never really seen it with his own two eyes. Not until he couldn’t get that damn kiss out of his mind.

And so, over the week they spent not talking to each other, Arty spent plenty of time with Billie and Sabrina, trying to come up with a way to make it up to her. To tell her that, yes, actually, he was a big dumb idiot and was helplessly in love with her.

Being the cheesy fella that he was, Arty drove on over to Dixie’s place on his lawn mower. A speaker was strategically placed on the back and it wasn’t until he was in front of her window. Standing on top of the mower, he lifted the speakers up, blasting one of their favorite songs. “Dixie Smith,” he called out, still holding the speakers above his had, “if you’re in there,” and he hoped like hell she was in there, “I have somethin’ to say.”

dixie really did love her best friend. arty was someone she coudl always rely on and he was always someone that showed her a good time. between arty and billie, there was no way dixie didn’t have someone there for her. she had the best friends a girl could ask for. this wasn’t the first time they’d been drunk together or the first time they were even going to dance together and it certainly wouldn’t be their last, she knew that and she was sure arty did too. she didn’t plan on pushing him out of her life any time soon. she swore her smile couldn’t get any bigger as he moved onto the dancefloor with him. tonight had been a blast and she knew she had him to thank. he always seemed to make her happy and that much, she was thankful for. she leaned into him as the two of them moved along to the music. she was way more affectionate when she was drunk, “i know ya would. that’s why you’re my best friend.” she smiled, feeling the need to thank him for being so great to her and so, she pushed herself up on her toes and connected her lips with her best friend’s without thinking too hard on it.

With Dixie as his best friend, he knew anything was possible in his life. Truly, anything. She had always been there for him and he had always been there for her. As Dixie leaned in close to him, there was a smile that couldn’t be wiped from his lips. “That I -” he began to agree with her, but her lips were meeting with his. Lips. Dixie was kissing him. And he was kissing her back, if only for a moment before he pulled back. “Dixie,” he breathed her name, his eyes shutting the moment. It’s not that he thought it was a bad idea, but he wasn’t sure that it was a good one either. “goin’ to give people the wrong idea,” he laughed softly, not wanting to hurt her feelings about the kiss. “When your brother comes over here, I’m blamin’ you.”

there wasn’t anything dixie loved more than spending time with her friends. it felt nice to really take a night off and really go out and do something. it’d been a while since she’d done anything but go straight home right after closing up the boutique and she felt as if she deserved to have some kind of fun. normally, she’d be pretty embarrassed to be acting this way around anyone but arty wasn’t just anyone. he’d seen her at her strongest and weakest moments and so she pretty much had no shame when it came to doing anything in front of her best friend. she shook him a little, her arms still clutched around his waist. “please, please, please.” she pouted, trying her hardest to convince him. when he agree though, a huge smile appeared over her face and she hugged him tightly, letting out an excited squeal as she did so. “you’re the best.” she spoke before pulling back and taking his hand to pull him on the dancefloor.

He knew just how hard Dixie worked, how hard the both of them worked. Dixie’s work ethic was something he would always admire about her but it didn’t stop him from cherishing every moment they got to spend together when she wasn’t working. Halloween night was an exception to the rule for the both of them - for most of Tupelo and he wasn’t going to let any moments pass him by. He couldn’t help but give way to a smile as laughter fell from his lips as Dixie shook him with her gentle hands. Arty wouldn’t be himself if he didn’t give her somewhat of a hard time before agreeing. He was dragged out to the dance floor, happy to see the smile that light up her face. “You know I’d do anythin’ for you.” He told her with a smile as he began to vibrate with the music playing around them. With Dixie, he could be his completely unfiltered self. He never had to worry about Dixie not liking the person that he was.

Billie didn’t waste time lying back in the blanket of wildflowers to get a better view of cerulean expanse. “Oh you’re right! In fact, doesn’t it look a bit like that grumpy orange tabby outside Morris’s hardware? Though certainly less temperamental”. What could be better, amid the heated breeze that blew her hair into artistic swirls, than the brilliant rays of sunlight the clouds conspire to let through? “What a perfect cloudy day” she sighed, gently tugging on Art’s sleeve until he joined her. Those passing white blossoms of the sky brought the transitory shade she loved. Upon the patch of land where their abandoned playground rested she felt as content as a butterfly beneath a tree canopy as the earth shifted from bright sun to mellow hues. Billie wondered what it would be like to soar among the puffs of white magic in acres of blue. Ironically, she was deathly afraid of heights – and horses but that was an entirely different subject – but she could at least imagine the freedom a bird might find; the ease. Much like the ease of her friendship with Arturo. There were two untroubled, lighthearted, peas in a pod and Billie wouldn’t dare have it any other way. There was nothing like the comfortability of having someone in your life who understood every single kooky quirk and the two of them together was quite a bit of outlandish behavior. But that was the essence of them.

“It’s a bit sad isn’t it?” Billie suddenly said, referencing the forlorn playground. The silence hung between them for a moment before Billie jerked up. “Oh I’ve just had a wonderful idea! We ought to clean it up don’t you think? It’s a piece of Tupelo, it shouldn’t be forgotten and this grass could really use some cutting” she teased, grinning over at him. “Maybe if we give it a fresh look the neighborhood children will come to play again! Come on, what do you say? You must admit its an offer you plant refuse” her smile began to tilt the wider it spread. “If you agree you’d be a real grass act, unless you have a shrubjection of course. Then I’d be suffering a huge moss” if left uninterrupted she could have thought of a million more lawn related puns, as many as it took to convince him even if giggling to profusely to get the words out. “I beleaf in us”

“Yes!” He exclaimed, laughing loudly as Billie knew exactly what cat he had been thinking of, even when he didn’t know he had been thinking of it himself. “I hadn’t even noticed that at first, but damn, it looks just like that cat. You know, he went and chased me down the street the other day? I was walkin’ on by with my breakfast and that bacon must have smelled so good. I ended up losing the whole bagel to an orange tabby cat.” He grimaced at the recollection of thought from the other week, “I mean, better that than losin’ an eye or somethin’ like that.” He laughed once more, though he knew better than to think the cat would do something like that. It just knew how to scare the living crap out of Arty when he was walking down the street with his breakfast. He was happy to join Billie for the moments that remained as they looked up at the clouds. “It really is,” he couldn’t help but smile softly at the sentiment. A perfect cloudy day. It wasn’t something he imagined most people would get around to saying.

His lips pressed into a thin line at Billie’s next words. He was about to agree with her when she sat up so suddenly, he had a moment of concern flash across his lips. His furrowed brows looked over at her, but it only lasted a moment when he realized that she was not in panic out of fear or pain, but because Billie Dawson had an idea. He would know that look from a mile away. “Billie...” he paused, unable to get a word in edge wise as she began to shoot out puns left and right about their upcoming adventure. “You know, I think if we work our grass off, we can get this done.” He added with growing grin, “So long as we don’t go on and beat around the bush.” Leave it to Billie to come up with an idea so grand that he would be foolish not to get behind.
