How best to define art is still regularly debated. Many books and journal articles have argued over even the basics of what we mean by calling something art. Theodor Adorno claimed, in 1969: “It is self-evident that nothing concerning art is self-evident.”
Personally, I would say that art plays a large part in making our lives infinitely rich. Imagine, just for a minute, a world without art! (You may think “So what?” but please consider the impact that lack of graphics would have on your favourite video game.) Art stimulates different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. Art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. For some people, art is the entire reason they get out of bed in the morning. You could say “Art is something that makes us more thoughtful and well-rounded humans.”
On the other hand, art is such a large part of our everyday lives that we may hardly even stop to think about it. Look at the desk or table where you are, right this minute. Someone designed that. It is art. Your shoes are art. Your coffee cup is art. All functional design, well done, is art. So, you could say “Art is something that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing to our eyes.”
The most esteemed ancient art forms were music and poetry, and those were regarded as divinely inspired. Eventually, the idea of art expanded in scope to include literature, visual art, performing art, and decorative art. But what exactly does art mean?
So, what does art actually mean?
Art begins when one person, with the object of joining another or others to himself as one and the same feeling is expressed by all with certain external indications.
To take the simplest example: a boy having experienced, the fear on encountering a wolf, is trying to relate that encounter; and, in order to evoke the same feeling in others, describes himself, his condition before the encounter, the surroundings, the woods, his own light heartedness, and then the wolf’s appearance, its movements, the distance between himself and the wolf, etc. Here infecting the same fear to the hearers and compelling them to feel is art.
Even if the boy had not seen a wolf but had frequently been afraid of one, and if, wishing to evoke in others the fear he had felt, also would be an art.
And it is also art if a man feels or imagines himself the feelings of delight, gladness, sorrow, despair, courage, or despondency and the transition from one to another of these feelings, and expresses these feelings by sounds so that the hearers are infected by them and experience them as they were experienced by the composer.
The feelings with which the artist infects others may be most various — very strong or very weak, very important or very insignificant, very bad or very good: feelings of love for one’s own country, self-devotion and submission to fate or to God expressed in a drama, raptures of lovers described in a novel, feelings of voluptuousness expressed in a picture, courage expressed in a triumphal march, merriment evoked by a dance, humour evoked by a funny story, the feeling of quietness transmitted by an evening landscape or by a lullaby, or the feeling of admiration evoked by a beautiful arabesque — it is all art.
If only the spectators or auditors are infected by the feelings which the author has felt, it is art.
To evoke in oneself a feeling one has once experienced, and having evoked it in oneself, then, by means of movements, lines, colours, sounds, or forms expressed in words, so to transmit that feeling that others may experience the same feeling — is the activity of art.
Art, at its simplest, is a form of communication. It means whatever it is intended to mean by the artist herself, and this meaning is shaped by the materials, techniques, and forms of the art, as well as the ideas and feelings it creates. Art can also simply refer to the developed and efficient use of a language to convey meaning with immediacy and or depth. Art is an act of expressing feelings, thoughts, and observations. There is an understanding that is reached with the material as a result of handling it, which facilitates one’s thought processes.
