PSA
For those who follow my brother over at artyholmes and/or iamahatter he is currently on a hiatus right now, he’s got a very life changing decision to make right now so he may or may not be back. (he’s fine, he’s not dying or anything, but he’s choosing whether he wants to have surgery or not)
I’m reblogging this on his accounts, I just thought I’d post it here too.
Arty smiled proudly at the older man, his eyes glued to his forehead as he spoke, it was closer to his eyes than his chin, and eye contact was polite, he wanted to be polite around the man he idolised. “He’s a consult-sult-sulting de-de-de…” He took a breath and tried again,...
Arty’s existence was generally kept a secret, for his safety if nothing else, and of those who did, only a few knew who his father was and what he did. He barely registered the way the man’s face lit up, to him that just meant that he was saying the right thing.
He was aware that most seven year olds didn’t read such complex books, it was one of the reasons he was bullied, and why he no longer read his books from home in class. “I lo-love mmmaths, an’ sp-sp-space. I want t’be an, um, ast-astro-ph-physicist.” The boy grinned, proud that he’d got the word out without having to take a breath.
His little face lit up at that, “Rrreally? I’d li-like that very mmmuch, prof-professor. Oh, we-well, that’ll be because he li-likes chem-chemistry mmmore.” Arty checked his watch, he was surprised that he hadn’t been found yet. “D-daddy will be here ssssoon, we co-could ask him?”
"M-mummy... I had a bad dr-dre-dream." Arty hugged his bear to his chest, his blankie draped over his shoulders as he walked into her room.
Molly rubbed her eyes as Arty walked into the bedroom. “Oh no sweetie that’s not very good is it?” she said sitting up and held her arms open to him “Come here little one and have a hug.” She whispered.
artyholmes
His bed was soaked so he was glad she’d agreed, he’d changed his pants and trousers and stripped the sheets but the mattress was still wet. Arty laid his head against her chest, “It was dar-dark, an’ I was all al-alone, an’ it was ssso lou-loud, an’ pe-people were la-laughin’ an’ yellin’ an’ I di-didn’t li-like it, but it wo-wouldn’t st-stop.”
Molly continued to stroke Arty’s hair as he explained his bad dream to her, it was not unlike the ones she had when she was younger. The fear of being alone seemed to be common in young children and the laughing was something that Arty must be worried about because of his stutter. “Oh poor you, but it’s ok now it’s just me here and it’s nice and quiet.”
Arty curled up against her nodding, he wasn't afraid of the dark, and he didn't mind being alone, most of the time he preferred it, but the darkness felt like it was going to swallow him whole. His stutter was worse now, because he was tired and upset, "I l-love you m-mummy."

His arms wrapped around her neck, climbing into her lap, simpering as she rocked him comfortingly. “Ca-can I sl-sl-sleep in here wi-with you, pl-please m-mummy?” Arty whimpered, he was still getting used to sleeping at his mummy’s house.
Molly nodded. “Of course you can sweetie if it will mean you can get to sleep.” she said laying down with the boy curled up against her. “Why don’t you tell me what your dream was about?” she asked stroking his hair.

Arty’s cheeks were damp from his tears, and his pajama bottoms no longer matched the top as he ran into her arms, nuzzling his face into her shoulder, sniffling slightly. “It was ssso sc-scary, m-mummy.”
"Oh my poor baby come here." Molly said holding Arty close against her body and wiped the drying tears from his cheek and kissed the top of his head. "It’s ok sweetheart mummies got you now." she said rocking him back and forth.

The boy nodded, following him back to his desk once the book had swapped hands, taking a seat opposite him. “I li-liked tha’ about it.” He mumbled truthfully, he enjoyed a challenge, especially one that would take effort to over come.
"D-daddy said som-something li-like tha’. He understood it, but he said tha’ it wo-would be har-hard fffor me t’understand." That was something he’d accepted, he was only young, he hand plenty of time to learn the things he didn’t understand now.
"Can you mmmake it out t’ Ar-Art-Arthur H-Holmes ple-please, sssir." Arty smiled politely at the professor, trying to be on his best behaviour.
Holmes, hm? That was interesting. “I don’t know any Holmes’ in the field of mathematics who would be able to understand my work. What does your daddy do for a living?” He asked, curiosity lighting up his voice. Moriarty only knew two Holmes’ who were capable of understanding his work - the question now was which Holmes.
He did hope it was the younger one. That would be fantastic. It would most certainly mean that this child was here without his parent’s permission too. Oh, Moriarty would love to have seen Holmes’ face when he had found out his son was interested in his work - it must have been priceless.
The professor scribbled down his signature in the book as well as a few words of encouragement - the usual sort of thing that he wrote for mathematics fans - before handing it back.
Arty smiled proudly at the older man, his eyes glued to his forehead as he spoke, it was closer to his eyes than his chin, and eye contact was polite, he wanted to be polite around the man he idolised. "He's a consult-sult-sulting de-de-de..." He took a breath and tried again, "De-detec-detective." People were often interested in his daddy, what he did for a living. He'd learnt to accept this as something grown-ups did, but he knew not to say too much to strangers. Even if he did feel like he could trust the professor, his daddy wouldn't like it, his daddy wouldn't like that he'd come here in the first place. His eyes lit up when his book was signed, Arty had never had a book signed before, he left it open so the ink if the pen could dry, after all the trouble he would be in he didn't want to smudge it. "Th-thank you, Prof-Professor Mor-Moriarty."
Well, that was certainly a lie. Moriarty knew lies - he worked with them for a living, and often found himself creating his own ones. For him to not be able to tell deceit at fifty paces was preposterous
.”You must be quite independent if he allowed...

Anna mouthed silently at the young boy for a few moments, not knowing how to respond. But one more look at his pleading face and she sighed, shoulders sagging in defeat. “Fine. Just- Keep it quiet.”
Taking a step back she leaned as far as she could to check if Mycroft was paying attention. Seeing he was on the phone she waved Arty in, closing the door behind him and bending to whisper to him as he passed. “Go to my room. Straight up the stairs, second door on your left. I’ll be up in minute. Don’t let it get anything dirty!”
artyholmes
Slowly, the boy unzipped his coat as Anna re-entered the room, letting the kitten sit on his lap, purring contently as he was scratched behind the ears. “M-me or hi-him?” He joked, giggling quietly, still focusing on the kitten with a grin.
Arty watched as she poured out the milk, he reached out an dipped the tip of his little finger into it, “It’s n-not war-warm, An-Anna. He’s a b-ba-baby, it n-needs t’be war-warm f-for him.” He insisted, using a single finger to stroke him from head to tail, he was so small, but carefully he placed the kitten on the towel, continuing to pet him.
Anna raised an eyebrow as she looked down at the kitten, a small frown marking her forehead. “Well, it’s certainly not that.” An exasperated sigh escaped her lips as he complained about the temperature of the milk. “Well, it’s just tough- Oh!” She huffed out a breath and dropped her face into her hands. “I’ll see what I can do,” she mumbled against her palms.
Pushing herself to her feet she disappeared into her en-suite, looking for the small travel bottles she had bought for shampoo and bodywash if she ever went on holiday. Finding them she ran some hot water into her sink and returned to pour some milk into them out of the carton.
"Right, not. These are clean. I’m going to put some milk in them and then put them in some hot water to warm up. Is that okay?"
Arty looked up, hurt and confused, he hadn't meant to be annoying or upset her, he just wanted to do right by the kitten, he had to protect it, and make sure it was okay. "Th-thank you An-Anna."
He watched her go, moving to lay on his stomach, so his face was next to the kitten, he called out as quietly as he could, understanding that his uncle couldn't know, "I'm goin' t'call him Jasper!" He mewled at him and that made the boy giggle, "He li-likes it!"
When Anna returned he nodded, that would work, and Jasper could drink from them too, like a little makeshift baby bottle, "N-not t-too hot, th-though, we don' want t'burn his t-t-tongue."

"Women in ancient Israel and Judah, on the whole, were better off than most of their contemporaries.”
"He’s ju-just busy is all… he tr-tries t’listen t’me… Th-thank you u-uncle My-Mykie! If I don’ he mi-might th-think tha’ it was your i-idea, an’ n-not mmmine."
"Your wish is my command, then, Arty. It wouldn’t do to allow my brother to begin teaching you that anything can be achieved by the hands of others.”
"I l-love d-daddy, very mmmuch, bu-but sssometimes I th-think I should be mmmore li-like you than him. Is th-that bad? Am I su-su-supposed t'want t'be mmmore li like d-daddy?"
Arty knocked hesitantly on the professor's door, waiting for a reply, hugging his copy of 'The Dynamics of an Asteroid' to his chest. No one had really questioned his presence on the campus, he thought that was probably too small to notice, and he was very quiet. -Artyholmes
The professor was far from happy when he heard to knock on his door. He was in the middle of completing a new theory that he was working on, but for all he knew that was a student at his door, and he had a duty to respond to his students (even if it was just to tell them to go away).
"What are you doing here?" Moriarty said when he pulled back the door to reveal who was behind it. Now, that was definitely not one of his students. “Where are your parents?”
He recognised his own book within the other’s arms, of course, That was strange. The professor did have people turn up with copies of his books sometimes, but rarely were his visitors so young.
The little boy peered up at him nervously, he was taller than he’d expected, he gripped the book tighter. He wasn’t sure quiet what he was thinking when he decided to slip away from his daddy’s side and onto the campus, but he was here now, there was no going back now.
"Go-good aft-afternoon sssir. Oh, um, d-daddy is, um…" Arty looked down at the floor, he’d never been very good at lying, his stutter didn’t help. A half truth was easier than a lie. "D-daddy is outside."
Quickly remembering his manners, Arty shifted the book into one hand and held out the other for his idol to shake, usually he didn’t shake hands, he didn’t usually do physical contact at all, but he knew shaking hands was poliet.
Well, that was certainly a lie. Moriarty knew lies - he worked with them for a living, and often found himself creating his own ones. For him to not be able to tell deceit at fifty paces was preposterous
.”You must be quite independent if he allowed you to come to my office all on your own.” That, or the child’s father was neglectful. The professor wasn’t sure which was the correct answer and, quite frankly, he did not care.
He shook the other’s hand, then motioned to the book he was clutching. “I assume you want me to sign that? Or perhaps you want to discuss a chapter? Either way, feel free to come in. I was just working on a new theory of mine.”
He'd be in trouble when his daddy found him, that he knew for sure, but it was worth it. He'd probably never get another chance to meet his idol, and his daddy didn't exactly approve of the professor for some reason.
"I li-like t'do th-things on my own, other p-p-people only confuse th-things." Arty had always been told he was an independent child, he preferred to work alone, it was easier for him that way.
"Yes pl-please, I understood lots of it, bu-but, the la-last chap-chap-chapter, was a bi-bit con-confusing." The boy wet his lips before entering the office, looking around curiously with a excited grin.

Arty let his bottom lip stick out and wobble when he thought she might refuse, he’d been walking home from school when he found the little ginger kitten. He couldn’t go back to Baker Street with it, his daddy would never allow it, so he turned to the only other person her could, Anna.
He moved silently inside, cradling it to his chest inside his coat, stroking it, mouthing a thank you at his cousin. Nodding he climbed the stairs, keeping low trying not to be seen, following her instructions and entering her room, shutting the door behind him. Arty sat on the end of her bed, petting the kitten, smiling at it as he waited for Anna to join him.
Anna shook her head as she watched him disappear up the stairs, one hand coming up to rub at her temple. “I must be mad,” she muttered to herself, turning on her heel and heading towards the kitchen.
Fifteen minutes later she was opening the door to her room, arms full with an old towel, milk and a saucer. “It’s a good job you’re cute.” Chuckling quietly she moved into the room, kneeling at the end of her bed and setting everything out on the ottoman. She quickly flattened out the towel and poured a little milk into the saucer. “There. Set them down on here. We’re okay so far. I don’t think Mycroft noticed.”
Slowly, the boy unzipped his coat as Anna re-entered the room, letting the kitten sit on his lap, purring contently as he was scratched behind the ears. "M-me or hi-him?" He joked, giggling quietly, still focusing on the kitten with a grin.
