Its honestly hilarious how immature my opinions on death note were 4 to 5 years ago (when i was 9 or 10)

Me at that time was just this rabid L supporter who’d hate on Light for every little thing for the sole reason that he killed my absolute favourite character (← at that time) ((not that L isn’t my favourite anymore, just that i have more characters i like now? Idk)) I was also insistent on the fact that L was “justice”.

I rewatched it again in 2015 (age 12) and my views changed again? I understood Light more and didn’t find L as interesting as i first found him. I found Light smarter i guess and i no longer hated him as a character.

Back again in 2017 (14) and I’m still debating the “who’s smarter” aspect of the whole thing. Light isn’t as mature as i remembered and he isn’t as composed either. The other characters stood out to me more than they did last time and are all equally as interesting as L and Light. Matsuda has also found a special place in my closet full of cinnamon rolls and i feel like i enjoy the series more as time goes by?

I really wonder how my opinion on death note will change again next time? Maybe ill find my current view immature- eh.

As for the “who’s smarter” thing, i still can’t deside. Even though the “Death Note : How To Read 13” shows the stats with Light and Near at 9/10 and L at 8/10 in terms of intelligence, when interviewed, L was said to be the smartest character “because the plot required it” (quote). To me, though, it all depends.

Light : I think his charisma and manipulative nature gave him the upper hand. In terms of intellect I find him to be on par with L but his social skills and connections gave him an advantage in my opinion. Light does get worked up quite easily, though. If he didn’t kill Lind L Taylor impulsively, L wouldn’t have gotten such a major lead. This major flaw, his emotions and childish reactions to some situations, evens out the advantage he has thanks to his social skills which places him at a tie with L.

L : Even though L’s stats were placed at 8/10 in terms of intelligence, I find that he’s on par with Light as I’ve said above. Even if his intellectual abilities were to dim in comparison to Light (though i still dont think so), his overall calm demeanor did give him an edge. Well initially, at least, since I do feel like L lost that composure at some points in the show but that makes him all the more human. In the extra book “L FILE No.15”, a young L (around the age of 5 to 10) was already shown as a child with exceptional intellectual abilities so thats a plus. His lack of social skills, however, doesn’t benefit him at all.

Near : Whether or not Near was the smartest (intellectually) of the three, i find that he’s lacking in many other ways. I by no means dislike him as a character (hes actually one of my favorites) but he’s far too dependent on others to stand alone like L, much less Light. L himself can be considered dependent but Near is a whole different level. If Near were to be left alone, no matter how smart he was, i doubt he’d be able to accomplish much. However, Near is undeniably smart and he may actually be the smartest of the three but because of all the other traits he lacks, i find that he falls short (pun nOT intended).

I don’t think anyone will read this but all this is mostly just for my future self to cringe at my current opinions. Im sure everyone has different opinions and i wish i could hear more of those opinions too.

All in all, i still cant choose who’s the “smartest” but at the same time, i dont see the need to choose the smartest either (funny how i say that after typing all this) all the characters created an amazing balance and i have no complaints.

Light is a surprisingly avid prankster, but his pranks are always carefully thought out and have waay too many steps who tf makes a spread sheet for April Fool’s??

Sayu just likes to see how many times she can get Light to smash his face into the saran wrap she taped in all of the doorways

Sachiko won every once in a while with a sneak attack

Soichiro just tried to stay out of the shenanigans but he usually failed

i offer u the HC that izaya plays AC in a way that would piss off AC twitter. he relentlessly bullies the villagers he thinks are ugly and hits them with nets and surrounds their houses with pitfall seeds. every other day he rips up his entire island with terraforming tools. shizuo plays maybe once a week when izaya demands he visit his island and still hasnt upgraded resident services from a tent

I like that HC, thank you anon fhdgjdh Izaya would be pissing everyone, even with a game like that and I’m definitely Shizuo here, all my friends are terraforming and making the best islands, and I still don’t even have KK, my house only has 2 rooms, it’s a mess-
