Maybe a controversial opinion
Tbh, it's understandable that the councillors thought that Shepard was insane about the whole Reapers thing in ME and ME2. Imagine some random soldier of a newly joined species comes to you and tells you that there are intelligent machines that want to slaughter a bunch of people every 50 000 years. And their evidence is all gone or just a bunch of experiences they (and their crew) witnessed. The crew's biased, obviously they'll follow their CO. Shepard wasn't even a high-ranking officer, only a Lt. Commander. Sovereign could be written off as a Geth creation because the Geth had kept to themselves for hundreds of years and no one knew what happened to them or what technological breakthroughs they had. The whole thing would probably sound like a conspiracy theory.
I feel like since we see the whole thing through Shepard's eyes, we believe that the Councillors were stupid for not believing the Commander. But we've also got to remember that these 3 people are expected to be responsible for billions or even trillions of people.
This is insane what is happening in Kansas.
They just—took away an entire population’s valid IDs. With a stroke of a pen. No grace period. No chance for anyone to get their IDs “fixed” in time, not that they should have had to in the first place. They even made it illegal for people to drive themselves to the DMV to get a new ID. That’s insane y’all. That is dystopian level madness. It is petty and cruel and literally dehumanizing.
They have also invalidated their birth certificates, thus jeopardizing their ability to prove citizenship and vote. It’s voter suppression on top of everything else.
They wanted to make an entire population into criminals with a stroke of a pen and that’s what they did.
And the rest of the country just… hasn’t noticed. No one cares. There’s no headlines. Nothing on the news. Because it’s Kansas. Because it’s trans people.
But if it can happen somewhere in this country, it can happen anywhere. And if it can happen to trans people, it can happen to you.
tier 1 media analysis: why did blorbo do that
tier 2 media analysis: what is the story communicating by setting things up so that blorbo would do that
tier 3 media analysis: what does it say about society that stories keep being set up in these ways
the "oh this game is kind of cool so i'll watch this mediocre cis man's youtube videos on it" to "ohh this cis man youtuber is a total shithead huh" 1-2 combo that happens to me once or twice a year
Holy fucking SHIT this is AWFUL. Decades of ghibli woobification leads to turning a biomechanical horror franchise into a pastel ghibli-AI version
This is like actively insulting to Keith thompson’s work lmao
“Biomechanical horror franchise” I absolutely love the Leviathan trilogy but it very much is a solid Young Adult trilogy aimed at a younger audience.
I think calling this a “ghibli-ai” version is extremely disrespectful to the many artists who worked on the animation to bring this series to life. You can even see the concept art in the tags here on tumblr. 3D animation =/= AI.
Keith Thompson’s work is so singularly excellent I don’t think there’s a studio alive that could bring it to life at the budget I’m sure Studio Orange was cleared for. The Netflix adaptation is obviously a completely different vision and that’s ok.
It being a young adult series doesn't erase that the beasties are constantly portrayed as disgusting and unethical. Changing what was originally a clearly sentient blob of flesh whose only purpose is to be a fucking balloon into a faceless jellyfish (which is barely sentient and honestly wouldn't even notice that it was a balloon) completely robs a core aspect of the story. All the clanker characters are physically repulsed by the beasties, especially when they're inside them.
It is an important part of the work because it helps to blur the line between good and bad, kids are gonna assume the Germans are Nazis but when you have sentient animals being twisted into forsaken by god monsters to fulfill mundane purposes it really breaks the normal framing of ww1.
Even as a kid, the descriptions of how they "train" beasties made me sick, and I was able to realize "oh hey this is just straight up torture of a living and breathing animal that cannot exercise full autonomy because they removed its limbs/drilled scaffolding and engines into its bones"
My flesh was dull gold...and my blood, rotted. Corpse after corpse, left in my wake... As I awaited...his return.
This character analysis shit is easy
