「Fruits Basket The Stage」 will finally be opening at Nihonbashi Mitsui Hall from March 4th (Friday) to 13th (Sunday) 2022. The role of Tohru Honda will be played by Ayano Christie Yoshida, Yuki Soma will be played by Naoya Kitagawa, and Kyo Soma will be played by Shohei Hashimoto. And, Shigure Soma - the character who lives and watches over the main characters - will be played by Yuya-san. We speak to Asato-san, who had not yet started rehearsals, about the charm of the work and his enthusiasm for the stage production.
―Please tell us your thoughts when you received an offer for this work.
Asato: Actually, about three years ago when the TV series started, a producer from TV Tokyo told me, "A really good work will be starting." So, I've been watching the anime broadcast since then. But with the news of the stage adaptation arriving this time around, I thought that "Ah, it's all connected." I really felt it was meant to be.
―What kind of impression did you have when you watched the anime?
Asato: My first impression of it was that it was this fantasy show with a gentle atmosphere of how the female main character met the twelve zodiacs, but it was more heart-wrenching than I imagined, like something muddy was drawn or messed up. There were also scenes that make me laugh. As it's a work that captures the depth of human beings, I thought it was amazing. The Final Final season was also really good right? After the stage adaptation was decided, I looked back at the series from the beginning again, but this time round each line echoed deeper and I could spot the red flags or, "Ah, so that's what that expression meant." The episode about Toru's mother was really tragic...
―How do you perceive Shigure to be played?
Asato: Well, he's really mysterious, isn't he? At first, he comes across as a responsible adult , but the mystery gradually deepens... For the other characters, we can understand their character development along the way, except for Shigure, for real, I kept wondering who he really is (laughs). Because of who Shigure is, I do feel the pressure in delivering this role. But, I basically think his position is more of an older brother while watching over Toru-kun, Yuki, and Kyo, so I want to convey that atmosphere. While I'm good friends with Hashimoto Shohei (playing Kyo), in reality, he's really more like a younger brother to me. So I'm looking forward to seeing what happens on stage.
―What is your impression of Toru, the main character?
Asato: She's is a really nice girl. Toru-kun's seriousness and innocence are overwhelming that even I honestly think "Let's be a good person like her." Also, I think the relationship between Toru-kun's friends, Uo-chan and Hana-chan, is wonderful.
―How did you feel when you wore the costume when you shot the visuals?
Asato: I'm used to wearing kimono because of my Tokyo Ryuuseigun unit activities, so I don't feel so out of place while in it. Besides, including the wigs, the hair and makeup team are always with us, so we can depend on them. The make-up and costumes of the other characters are also the best, and I think that everyone who is watching will be able to easily enter the world of Fruits Basket.
―How do you feel about the performance now?
Asato: Frankly, I'm really looking forward to it. I'm happy to be able to see the work that has been loved by everyone for over 20 years, but I personally love it. I'm not worried about anything, I'm jumping over the pressure and preparing for the role while feeling the tremendous power of the work itself. The cast members, including Shohei, whom I talked about earlier, are many friends who have I worked with them previously, so I'm just looking forward to seeing how the show turns out . After that, I think that everyone is interested in what will happen to the transformation scene for the zodiacs!? Because I was not informed at the moment before the rehearsal, I am super anxious.
― Lastly, please share a message to all the fans who are looking forward to it!
Asato: I'm confident that something absolutely wonderful has been created for this production. I would like to immerse my heart into communicating the wonderfulness of this work, not just only to the manga and anime fans, but also to those who enjoy the stage. However, personally, I think that if you haven't seen it yet, you can feel it deeper if you come into the theater after touching the manga and the anime versions. I hope you'll enjoy it together! Confetti Interview: Galileo★CV (Asato Yuya x Kubota Hidetoshi )
(Published: 03 May 2021) Upcoming musical drama "Galileo CV" written and directed by Yasuyuki Tsutsumi will be based on popular fiction novel "The Jester of the Fictitious Statue" by Keigo Higashino . "CV" is named after the acronyms "Crown" and "Virtual". We spoke to Asato-san and Kubota-san to to learn more about this play and what they are looking forward to.
Plot:
There is murder at the rehearsal hall for a small theater company. The victim is Ryosuke Komai (played by Yuya Asato), the director of the theater company. The members of the troupe are suspects of the foul play but they all have an alibi. Shumpei Kusanagi (played by Ryosuke Kato), a detective who got drawn into the investigation tries to solve the mystery by borrowing the wisdom of Imperial University’s Associate Professor Manabu Yukawa (played by Hidetoshi Kubota), an associate professor at Imperial University.
― Please tell us your first impression of reading the original.
Asato: I’ve read some of Keigo Higashino's novels, and of course watched the "Galileo” TV drama series. I enjoyed the novel but I but I can't imagine how it will be executed on stage (laughs).
― What do you find particularly interesting?
Asato: Higashino-san's choice of words is amazing. I could immediately picture the scene in my mind. However, the original novel has more scene depictions than what we have in our script, so I wonder how Tsutsumi-san will be able to squeeze all of that into two hours. I am looking forward to it.
― The both of you are born in the same year (1987), although at different months. I believe this is the first time you both are co-staring together?
Asato: That's right. The wonderful 87-year (laughs). But I'm the victim, so my character dies early in the story, so maybe my character does not cross paths with Kubota-kun’s? I'd like to have a scene where I get involved with the theatrical production somehow (laughs).
― Now is a great opportunity if you both have any questions to ask each other!
Asato: Do you drink?
Kubota: Yeah. I had some yesterday and the day before yesterday. (laughs)
Asato: I see! I like highball, how about you?
Kubota: I'm from Fukuoka but I can’t drink shochu. Otherwise, besides sochu, I drink the rest.
Asato: I see you were from Fukuoka. I was born in Okinawa, we live in a slow time like this (laughs).
Kubota: The so-called Uchina time? (laughs). I heard that people in Okinawa start weddings about one or two hours behind the scheduled time. Is that true?
Asato: It's true (laughs). Weddings or any event. The schedule is usually delayed. We usually start to get ready about the time we are supposed to leave the house (laughs). I had a really hard time when moved to Tokyo. But I don't think I arrive too late now.
Kubota: I see! So when we invite the people of Okinawa, we should should give them an hour’s grace period before the scheduled time (laughs). I’m kidding, i think someone has mentioned it before but Tokyoites are just rushing all the time.
― Thank you for your pleasant chat. Finally, do you have a message for the audience and your fans who are looking forward to the performance?
Asato: I think there are many who have read the original story and know the ending, or who have a strong impression of the TV drama. Keigo Higashino’s work slowly unfolds the person’s human nature, which is something unique that can bring the story to “life” on stage. I’ll do my best to deliver his world to the audience, and I’ll be happy if the play lingers in your hearts and minds after watching it.

[Series column] 2.5D Director Yoshitani Koutarou introduces the charm of young actors #13: Asato Yuya

When we first met, I thought that he was a man with an air of mystery surrounding him. His amicable nature made him good at closing the distance between people. This was not just towards fellow actors, but also towards staff. He gets closer to you with a carefree smile and a joke or two.
Although he may come across as ditzy in nature, but he could fully understand the atmosphere and the work just from the insight he gains from his surroundings. He gives relevant advice to fellow cast members, and even shares his suggestions with the director.
He is none other than Asato Yuya.
You will be able to produce an ideal work with Asato-kun around. Actors use their bodies and hearts to express themselves, which is why it is only natural that the innate nature of that person can be seen. His acting has this kindness that comes from the heart, which gives off a huge sense of security especially in the roles he plays. As for his singing and dancing, he is good with his vocals and physical balance, and has strong performance ability.
In addition to that, his special quality is being able to perform naturally without forcing it. There are no unpleasant lines or unsightly movements. With him, the range of expressions for the character expands further, and his expressions seem to be warmly welcoming the audience.
Even in the productions that I'm directing, there are times when I get see Asato-kun's acting. I like how he expresses that kindness through his lines and his songs. I'm sure that his performance has a purifying effect on the heart. If you do a voiceprint analysis of his voice, you will surely get such a number. Also, as shared earlier, he is good at observing his surroundings – which he makes use of in his talk shows. In the past, I've been on several talk shows with him, he was able to talk to the guest at the right timing while observing his surroundings. He is not someone who is assertive. Through his movements, you could feel that he is not impatient nor being chased by a sense of mission.
I think he makes full use of the cheerful disposition of Okinawan people. Perhaps his number one motto as an actor is to bring joy to the person in front of him. And, his biggest reward as an actor are the smiles of his co-stars and staff, and of his audience. Well within the stars or threads of fate, I’m sure that this is his destiny. When I searched the internet, his favorite foods are sweet Japanese curry and cinnamon toast. His specialty is rolled egg and omelet rice. His tongue is sensitive to heat so he has to let his food cool down before he can eat it. He loves children and animals, and is bad with horror and insects. Now isn’t that a gentle image?
He is a kind man who would observe his surroundings and allows other actors and his work to take centerstage. An important characteristic as an actor for Asato-kun would be his depth of expression – it’s an indispensable part of him. I do look forward to performances which exudes his personality from now on.

2.5-Jigen!!: We had a chat with Eito Konishi, who plays the role of Hanako and who is starring as the show’s lead for the first time, and Yuya Asato, who plays the role of the mysterious teacher, Tsuchigomori.
Q: This is the first time that you both are co-starring. Please share with us your impressions of each other.
Asato: “He’s really young and fresh-faced!”, that’s what I thought at first. After that, when I actually met and got to talk to him, I realised that he is actually a very calm and nice child. But that may just be what I noticed about him...(laughs)
Konishi: Before I started this job, I was just an ordinary high school student and I have watched the plays which Asato-san appeared in. It was so hot and cool ... so I was really looking forward to meeting him. When we finally met, I felt that he was a very kind and reliable senior. Actually, I've already bugged him with a lot of questions. (laughs)
Q: This will be Konishi-san’s first time working with director Kotaro Yoshitani for this play. As Asato-san has worked with Director Yoshitani many times, do you have any advice for him?
Asato: I think about how Yoshitani-san will approach the direction of this play. Yoshitani-san's production is very unique. His direction expands the imagination of the viewer, and the inside of his mind is like the universe itself...So, those who are working with him for the first time may be surprised. So this time round, I have taken up the role of intercepting between the cast members and Yoshitani-san, to help them follow and support the director’s vision. By that, it’s more of “I don’t really understand that part too.” (laughs).
Konishi: I'm counting on you on this! It's my first time working with Yoshitani-san, and I'm new to musicals and dance, so I'd really like to have Asato-san, who has a lot of experience and respect in this field, guide me along.
Q: In a company full of young and a fresh-faced cast members, how would you like to treat everyone as the oldest person?
Asato: Ah, that's right...the oldest person. I'm also surprised about that (laughs). As all these young and energetic people are gathering in this show, I hope to support them from the backseat. But actually, rather than thinking about it, I'm the type who takes action when I want to do something. Of course right now, I'm thinking "I wish I can support them", but how can I go about doing that...? I am looking forward to that myself. I may be the oldest, but I’m probably the most easily-manipulated (laughs).
Q: Regarding the character Tsuchigomori, may I know what kind of impression do have of him?
Asato: He has a warm personality. He’s always closely looking out for Hanako-kun wistfully. He does have a sharp tongue, but as a teacher, I think he's a really reliable parent-like figure for Hanako-kun.
Q: In your opinion what does Tsuchigomori’s existence mean to Hanako-kun?
Konishi: I feel that he is the one who understands Hanako-kun the most. He knows Hanako from the old days, and he was always there with him ... so he is someone that Hanako-kun can be at ease with and rely on. Asato-san is also a reliable person, so there is a lot of overlap between the role and my impression of him. Since it's a musical, I have a lot of things to learn about singing, dancing, and acting, so I really want to learn by chatting with him and listening to him.
Asato: I’d really like to do that too!
Q: 「Jibaku Shonen Hanako-Kun ~ The Musical」 will be the first stage show in 2021 for the both of you?
Konishi: It's my first musical and my first time being the lead, so I've been really excited since I heard about it! I want to do my best in the rehearsals.
Asato: On the contrary, I'm wondering if I should watch over from behind just like Tsuchigomori (laughs).
Konishi: Whaaaat? (laughs). I believe that you will be able to help me do my best!
Asato: No, I'm always in a nervous wreck (laughs).
Q: It looks like everyone is getting along well in the company.
Asato: It's a story about a school, so it’ll be great if we could bring out the fun and school-like atmosphere to the show. As the show is full of young cast members, and I hope that the fun of school will be conveyed to the audience who are watching it.
Konishi: Exactly what he said.
Q. By the way, this work has some scary elements, are you good with horror?
Asato: I'm no good with it (laughs).
Konishi: I'm fine! I love being frightened. Maybe it's because I don't believe in scary things.
Asato: I'm terrified because I believe in ghosts. Hanako-kun is okay, but I’m really bad with scary stuff. I don't understand the meaning of a haunted house anymore... Like why does anyone want to be scared ? (Laughs) Actually, I'm even afraid of the loud noises on stage ... But this time, I would like to borrow the ‘face’ of Tsuchigomori and create an atmosphere where I can say "This isn't scary at all?" (Laughs).
Q: Please share a message with the fans and the highlights of this stage.
Asato: I think it will be a work that the audience can enjoy, it is beautiful, a little scary, and also painful. Together with the strengths of Director Yoshitani-san and all of us, we hope to be able to deliver an enjoyable show to all of you. Please look forward to it!

SPICE: The term "2.5-Dimensional Actor" is becoming more widespread, isn't it? It was also featured on TV. On the other hand, some people may wonder, "How is different from being an actor?"
ASATO: For example, works like "Momotaro" and "Romeo and Juliet" have their original versions, so if you adapt it on stage, it will end up being a 2.5D work. In other words, I don't think there is a rule that "2.5D Stage and 2.5D Actors must be like this.” However, if you don’t mind me putting across this strongly, I think that 2.5D presents anime and manga works as closely to the original work as possible on stage. Using make-up that is close to the original characters, and holding on to the power of the original work, we are able to deliver that to our audiences. As an actor, there is no difference in the acting aspect, but I wonder if the way we cherish the world of the original work more faithfully is the thing that sets us (2.5D Actors) apart.
SPICE: I see!
ASATO: If someone asks me "What kind of work do you do?", I usually won’t say "I'm a 2.5D actor" (laughs). Normally, I’ll just say "I'm an actor." it is indeed quite difficult to see the difference between the two. When I perform, I read the original work and get the sense of the world in the work, and then I try to transcend into that world. I try to find a place that is close to my character and myself. There are many instances that the character expresses their feelings through the artwork and without much dialogue, and in such cases, I will expand my imagination and create the character within myself. For example, I hate losing, so it's easy to get close to a character with that kind of personality. On the contrary, even if it is something I can't sympathize with, I try to get closer to the character after thinking about the reasons why I can't sympathize with him.
SPICE: How do you think 2021 will be like for 2.5D?
ASATO: In 2020, I think many people who are involved in theater and the audience who love it felt sad. The stage is influenced by the laughter, applause, and tears of our audience, and influences the play considerably. It's a raw space where everyone's feelings are conveyed properly. And it is due to this circumstances (the pandemic) that I was able to realize the importance of theatre arts. In that sense, I would like deepen this awareness by creating a stage where we can connect with everyone who watches it, even if it just one show, from now on. It would be great if we could get back to the situation we had before as soon as possible. But until that day comes, we’ll continue to stand on the stage and deliver the show.

Sumabo: First of all, please share with us your thoughts when the release of your 2021 calendar was decided.
Asato: I'm really happy that we can release it every year and release it safely this year, and also, it is thanks to everyone that we were able to hold an event while keeping infection control measures in place.
Sumabo: When and where was this calendar taken?
Asato: It was taken at a studio in Tokyo, in November.
Sumabo: Please share with us if you have a concept for the 2021 calendar.
Asato: I don’t usually specially decide on a concept every year, but this time I ran with the concept of "Somehow, Asato is cool" in mind.
Sumabo: It's nice to say something cool while being embarrassed about it at the same time! I saw the calendar earlier, and felt that "Somehow, Asato is cool" has managed to capture mature and chic shots of you.
Asato: Thank you.
Sumabo: You chose the A4-sized calendar’s January page as your favourite shot. What made you decide on this one?
Asato: I thought that black and white shots on the Asato calendar were a little unusual, and I chose that because I thought it would be a good photo for a new start in 2021. I also personally think that the A4-sized calendar’s November page is popular, so it ended up also being one of my favourites.
Sumabo: Please share with us a funny thing that happened during the photoshoot.
Asato: I’m not sure if it was the photographer that was good or that the subject being photographed that was good, but the photoshoot ended up finishing 3 hours earlier than expected. Who do you think was the better one?
Sumabo: Both Asato and the photographer were good!
Asato: I shouldn’t be saying this but... (laughs) The staff didn't think it would end so quickly, and they were like "What should we do ...?" (laughs).
Sumabo: This time, three types of calendars will be released. The A4-sized calendar, desktop ring calendar, and the desktop square-type calendar. Is there any place you would like them to be put on display?
Asato: Every year, I'm really happy to see my calendars being displayed on tabletops at work, at home or at their (the fan’s) parents' house, and on the shelves where my goods are lined up. In order for colleagues at the workplace to remember me, I have asked them (the fans) to display the desktop-type calendar on their work-desk, and if they are embarrassed about it, they can hide it inside their desk (laughs). Anyway, I want everyone to enjoy turning the pages every month.
Sumabo: if the 2022 calendar is released, what kind of calendar would you like to have?
Asato: Given that the calendar has many shots that are relatively similar to the shots in my photo books, I think it would be nice to have a whole cut called "Asato Yuya Drinks Alcohol". And, I get featured drinking different liquour every month, like "~month whiskey", "~month sake", "~month beer", "~ month awamori". If possible, I would like to start the photoshoot after drinking for an hour (laughs). I think it's pretty cool to have such a calendar.
Sumabo: That’s true! I’ve never heard of a calendar with such a concept.
Asato: I know right? Anyway that’s just an idea, and I don't know if it will actually happen, but since there are three types of calendars, I wonder if one of it can be the drinking version.
Sumabo: I think it's a very interesting project (laughs).
Asato: At the launch event of the 1st photobook last year, the photographer managed to snap a candid shot of me drinking my first beer of the day and I uploaded that shot online. And it seems that my happy expression was a hit among my fans. It was well received. Everyone reading this interview, please drink in moderation!!!

Due to COVID-19 restrictions by his agency Ruby Parade, we could not send the birthday fanbook to Asaty this year as they will not be accepting any gifts and/or letters from fans. There is also no chance to slip the fanbook into the present box of his other plays as the organizers have banned the acceptance of fan letters and/or fan gifts at the theatre. Working around these restrictions, we decided to do a digital gift this year.
3) Which organization are we supporting for this project?
We will be supporting the Australia Zoo’s ‘Adopt an Animal’ programme. It is a self-funded organization, and focuses on animal conservation and research, and is the legacy of the late Steve Irwin (the famous Crocodile Hunter) and home to his family Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin. Working with Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors, Australia Zoo also supports the most successful tiger conservation program in Asia. Australia Zoo has also been very kind to help us with this project, and we’re excited to work with them. We hope that Asaty will be able to meet his tiger buddy in Australia someday, and take the opportunity to connect with his fans in the region.
4) Are we really adopting the tiger for Asaty?
Not quite. The adoption is a symbolic gesture. The tiger will remain under the care of Australia Zoo. The adoption fees towards the nominated animal will go to animal care & conservation efforts in Australia Zoo, tiger conservation efforts in Asia and research in zoological institutions under their charge.
5) What will Asaty get when we adopt the tiger from Australia Zoo?
Asaty will receive an e-Certificate of the adoption, an accompanying letter from the zoo and a beautiful picture of his new furry friend (all digital). The fanpage will translate the official “adoption” letter, and the photos and e-Certificate will be forwarded to his agency to be delivered to Asaty via email. We will also be doing a Twitter campaign on the day of his birthday (Dec 4) to share the adoption news with Asaty. More information on how you can participate will be provided closer to his birthday.
6) How long will the animal be adopted?
The adoption record will last one full year (12-months) from the start of the adoption date.
7) Do we need to pay money to be part of this project?
No. Just like previous Birthday Fanbook projects, the admins of this fanpage will cover all expenses of this project. However, we welcome any amount of contribution to share the adoption fee of the tiger, if you’d like.
8) Can non-English speaking fans participate?
Yes! We welcome collaborations with fans outside of the Asato Yuya International Fanpage to join us.

[Interview Excerpt] Yuya Asato x Ren Yagami
Q: What has changed before and after the coronavirus hit?
>> It’s been a while since we last had a chat. What did you both do during the Stay Home period?
Yagami: Because we can’t do any public-facing work, right? So, I wrote scripts (for plays), watched dramas and so on.
Asato: I also watched overseas dramas all the time, and a lot of anime too.
Yagami: My way of thinking has changed because of the coronavirus. It’s because of peace-time that entertainment can be delivered, and that thought hasn’t changed one bit. But to not be able to see artistes perform, well… entertainment is essentially dead.
Asato: Entertainment is the last thing on everyone’s minds, at least that was what I felt. This is why during this period, it is thanks to the availability of streaming services that the entertainment industry is able to stay afloat.
Yagami: Yes. Perhaps Asato and I are not very well-known to the rest of the world, but the people that watch our plays have been very supportive. I think that even if someone launches a YouTube live-stream from the countryside, a definite number of audience will watch it, especially if the content is so interesting that it makes them want to continue watching it. But, it will be a problem when there isn’t any popular content being presented for the stage, or for actors not being able to stand on the stage, and also for young children to have no opportunity to enter this industry.
Asato: This is especially true for 2.5-dimension performances.
Yagami: There are so many artistes that are already active in their work, but I feel sorry for those young actors who are not able to stand on the stage during these times. Asato had to perform in a live show with no audience present right?
Asato: Yeah, I did that. We had the experience of having a live audience in one of the performance before, so it was not so lonely when we pictured the scene in our minds of how it would be like if they were present. Once we knew that there is an audience behind the cameras, we faced the cameras and enjoyed delivering our performance, I also learnt a lot through this experience. However, when I thought about how the audience would have felt, like “Ah, you probably wanted to see us from this seat”, I got sad. Because of the experiences I have performing on the stage, I always have the feeling of wanting to perform in front of an audience again.
Yagami: Indeed, the actual performance is really fun. It isn’t as fun when rehearsing in front of the mirrors, you don’t get any power from it. I’m sure this coronavirus situation would look like before BC and after BC. Things have changed before and after the coronavirus situation. Before it happened, no one knew about Zoom, but perhaps now new things of these sort will be coming out in the market.

About this book: "Ninodan" is a dialogue book featuring 15 pairs of actors, with each pair sharing about their impressions and memories of each other, how they felt during the Stay Home period, and future challenges. At present, many performances have been canceled or postponed due to the spread of COVID-19. Part of this magazine's revenue will be donated to Non-Profit Organization 'Peace Winds Japan' and the funds will be used by medical staff who are fighting the coronavirus.This magazine is a form of support for the entertainment industry and are featuring artistes who support this cause.

The first half of Wada Masanai and Asato Yuya’s location variety programme「Wada Masanari and Asato Yuya’s Shining Boys NINJA Showdown ～But we are not reaction entertainers though!? ～」will air on TBS Channel 2 on 4th November (Monday). In this programme, two popular actors who are active in 2.5-Dimension stage will dress up in ninja outfits at Ninja Village (Iga Province) and will face off against each other in three challenges.
This time round, we have a chat with Asato Yuya to hear from him about his memories of the location shoot as well as about Wada.
Question: How did you feel when you heard that the programme has planned for you two to be in a ninja outfit in Iga and take part in three challenges against each other?
Asato: I was like “What the…? A showdown?!” (laughs). But for us to train as a ninja as adults …made me boil up with excitement.

Question: I understand that the ninja training challenged you physically, please share with us your thoughts about the location shoot.
Asato: We went through a lot of experiences, but among them all, from what I remember in my hazy memories, the (ninja) training still remains in my head and body!

Question: Please share with us an interesting story of your first meeting with Wada Masanari, your co-actor from the same agency and someone whom you have worked with on stage, and your impression of him back then.
Asato: I might be wrong but I remember the first time we met was at an Okonomiyaki restaurant. Rin Rin was just fresh out of Osaka then. His matureness is 100 times higher now as compared to before (laughs).

Question: What is something new about Wada-san that you have learnt during the location shoot?
Asato: He really hates bees. A swarm of bees appeared during the filming and he was screaming ‘Ahh! Ahh!’ So cute (laughs).

Question: Wada-san isn’t here right now, but if you could be his apprentice, what would be the thing you want to learn from him? Please tell us.
Asato: Playing the ‘straight man! I can’t imitate that. I always end up being the funny man. Guess I’ll continue to be the funny guy even though I don’t like it.
(Translator note: Asato Yuya is referring to Manzai, a traditional style double act comedy or stand-up comedy. Manzai usually involves two performers (manzaishi)—a straight man (tsukkomi) and a funny man (boke). When put together, the scenes acted out are meant to be funny, both for the boke's idiocy and the tsukkomi's short temper.)

Question: Do you have a special skill that no one can beat? Please tell us.
Asato: My happy outlook in life! People who enjoy life are winners, so my special skill is being the happy rascal (laughs).

>>Question: The F6 2nd LIVE tour “FANTASTIC ECSTASY” has started. What kind of tour is it going to be?
Asato: Because the venue where this tour is held is bigger than the last time, I feel a different kind of pressure as compared to the last tour. I felt pressure during the last tour but when I stood on the stage, I was ‘lifted’. This time round, I’ll enjoy the experience while feeling the pressure, with all six of us working hard together.
>>Question: What do you think has evolved since the 1st tour?
Asato: In the last tour, I knew that every time I performed, I would be able to enjoy the experience together with the audience. The way of how the show is being presented, the ways we can interact with the audience, and how we can all enjoy it is gradually becoming different from the stage version. Taking advantage of that, the last「Osomatsu-san on STAGE-SIX MEN'S SHOW TIME 3」added call-and-response (in the songs), so this tour will ‘power up’ the sense of unity with us and the audience.
>>Question: During the last tour, in between performances, I heard that your mother was really good at guiding F6 members around Okinawa.
Asato: Ahahah, yes that’s true (laughs).
>>Question: Do you guys have a place you’d like to go to, tour around or enjoy this year?
Asato: It was Summer back then, so we went to the sea and a place called “THE Okinawa” but this year’s tour takes place in March so I was thinking of exploring some lesser-known places in Okinawa instead. I have already considered visiting a few places. Also… my mom will be joining us (laughs).
>>Question: You debuted on stage in April 2011, and you will be entering your 10th year as an actor in April this year. Which stage work marks the turning point in your career during the last 10 years?
Asato: It is definitely Stage Play「Kuroko no Basuke」. The first time I heard about it (the decision to cast me), I thought “Is this a lie?” and couldn't believe it. After the news was published in the "Weekly Shonen Jump" comics and me meeting the co-stars, I finally realized that “I’m really going to be acting in this play…”. As I was selected during the audition, that audition also left a huge impression on me.
>>Question: What do you mean by that?
Asato: Although there were several people at the audition, including director Mr Nakayashiki (Norihito), and Mr Nakayashiki was reeling with excitement throughout my audition. It was later that I heard that Mr Nakayashiki said, "I don't want anyone else to play Kagami Taiga except Asato!"
>>Question: In these 10 years, you have starred in various works, acted alongside many co-stars and staff. Reflecting back on this, how has the last 9 years been like for you?
Asato: It feels like time passed by in an instant, and also... I’m growing that much older (laughs). I don't feel like I'm so old. I always feel like I’m 17 years old (laughs). At this rate, when I hit my 20th year or 30th year (as an actor), I hope I can still say “Time passed so much just like that.” while continuing this line of work.
A Memorial Photo Book commemorating 10 years of Asato Yuya’s acting journey will be released in June 2020! The photos will be taken at his birthplace in Okinawa and places in Tokyo that is of significance to his career. Long interviews about his thoughts will also be featured along with the photos.

“I was so nervous that I can’t remember anything that happened on the Toyosu PIT stage”
Question 1: Today is the photoshoot for some promotional visuals, what is your impression of your new costume?
Asato: I always really look forward to my costumes, and was still equally really excited about it this time round, with me going “Ahh, I see. So this is how it looks like...”.
Question 2: I wonder what the show is going to be about...! 『Osomatsu-san on STAGE～SIX MEN'S SHOW TIME 3～』（aka、Stage Play『Osomatsu-san３』) , I can’t wait for it to premiere this November.
Asato: I can’t help looking forward to it too. F6 had a Live Tour, and the sextuplets had a comedy special, we were all separately challenged in different areas. We’ll be combining our learnings (level-ups) together! Something like that... Or, should I say it’s a ‘power-up’ instead since it’s Osomatsu. (laughs)
However, we are really really looking forward to it. Like how do we interact with each other on stage in『Osomatsu-san３ 』, how can we get the crowd excited during the show and all that.
Question 3: Shall we take a look back on last Summer’s staging of F6′s 1st Live Tour 「Satisfaction」? The tour took place around 4 areas namely Tokyo, Chiba, Okinawa and Osaka. And you guys were really happy to be able to make a triumphant return back to the first location (Tokyo) too, right?
Asato: I was really happy and enjoyed myself a lot, but of course it was quite a tough show to do. When I stood on the stage of Toyosu PIT for the very first time, we were more nervous as compared to anyone else. The ‘Whooooo!’ cheers from the crowd were something I have never experienced before. I had such a good experience out of it.
Question 4: What was the thing you remember the most vividly when you guys first stood on the stage of Toyosu PIT?
Asato: Oh man... you see, I was seriously so nervous that it is as if all of (my memories) of it were gone. I was able to move my body on autopilot just like how we have rehearsed repeatedly. But I gradually got used to it. The first time was super nerve-wracking, and then it was like a festival for our very last show.
Question 5: How was the dancing and singing experience like?
Asato: Well, I haven’t learned too much of it. Hasn’t it been said that Izawa Yuki (acting as Osomatsu F6 ver.) is the best at dancing and singing among all of us in F6? Hahaha.
But compared to the 1st stage, I think everyone has improved. We were even praised by our vocal coach and dance choreographer. Izawa has also personally noticed the growth of the other members. Saying things like “You guys picked up the choreography really quick!” and being really pleased about it.

Question 6: When all 6 members of F6 are together in private, what kind of atmosphere is it like?
Asato: With regard to the atmosphere when we are together in private, well, we tease Wago Shinichi-chan (acting as Jyuushimatsu F6 Ver.). For the main sextuplets, Yusuke (acting as Karamatsu) gets teased. For our side, it’s Wago-chan. Even though he is the oldest out of all of us.
Izawa, holding the position as our leader, is the youngest. He is really sweet in many areas. In that sense, the 6 of us are pretty well-balanced.
Question 7: In previous interview articles, a few of the cast members said that privately, you usually the life of the party. Is it because you have very firm sense of who you are?
Asato: That’s totally not true. But of course, I am usually the one who raises the question like “Shall we have a meal?” or “Let’s go to this place.” When we were in Okinawa, I certainly took the initiative to guide everyone around.
That reminds me, after our Osaka performance, when we were super tired, the 6 of us went bowling after our after-party. We were that close (laughs).
Question 8: The bonds between the 6 of you have deepened after being together for quite a long time, hasn’t it?
That’s right. When we were in Okinawa, Nakayama Yuki (acting as Todomatsu F6 Ver.) was unable to drop in earlier. He had some work to be done and was only able to join us a bit later. We kept in touch with Yuki while we had our dinner and he was almost in tears. it’s like we brought ‘us’ to ‘him’. When we are separated, all we think about is wanting to quickly see each other again.
Question 9: Well then, the tickets for Stage Play『Osomatsu-san ３』is sold out. And a live-viewing for the final performance has been decided.
Thank you very much! I would like you all to follow the rules of the movie theater but if possible, I would like you to shake your penlight during F6′s live part. Let's get excited together!
It’s been about 2 months since Stage Play 『Kuroko no Basuke』ULTIMATE-BLAZE ended.
I’ve been wanting to write a blog entry about it but I keep deleting what I wrote and starting all over again.
I’m not particularly good at words, much less at expressing myself through writing, and among all these things I made a lot of lame excuses to avoid writing this.
But if I left it unwritten, I get angry at myself thinking along the lines like “Why are you hesitating. Just write out your honest feelings as it is.” Perhaps that writing a blog entry about it, it would be as if all of Kurosute is over! ...In my head, I didn’t want that. It’s like I didn’t know my own self, but I’m not even clear on what I wanted to do because I don’t know much about myself. LOL Okaaaaay, let’s leave that aside for now.

Thank you so much for supporting us from 8 April 2016 to 19 May 2019! I’m so blessed to be able to act a character called Kagami Taiga from a widely-beloved work called 『Kuroko no Basuke』.
This is not just any ordinary thing. It was a miraculous encounter. It is no doubt that meeting Kagami has changed my life. It’s not merely a grandiose way of thinking or a form of motivation, but a way of life for me.
I thought Kagami is really cool. That said, there are a lot of cool characters in 『Kuroko no Basuke』. Not forgetting the Generation of Miracles, our allies. The best team that is Seirin. And also Kuroko. Everyone is cool. But no matter what, I think Kagami is the coolest.
“It’s better if I can’t win!”
”I’ll go beyond the limits!”
I don’t usually say such things or think that way. LOL
However, it’s because I was together with Kagami that I could surpass whatever hardships and setbacks I faced. I have so much gratitude for him. I’d also like to thank all of you for supporting me as Kagami from The Encounter. It’s thanks to all your support that I was able to do my best. Thank you for joining us in aiming to be Japan’s No. 1.
Those guys from the Generation of Miracles were really strong. They were so good. I could not defeat them by myself. They are the ones who are so passionate about the heated and high-level play of basketball.
Everyone on Team Seirin is also the best. I’ve received so much support from them. So much power from them. We are able to become Japan’s No. 1. because we’re together.
The moment when we won the championships was unforgettable.
Also, I’m glad that Kensho is Kuroko. No doubt that it is thanks to Kensho, I am where I am today. My respect to you.
Okay, I’ll stop staying all these embarrassing stuff that I don’t usually say. LOL
I’ve always wanted to say all these ever since The Encounter, but I’m kinda mad that it’s gonna be another long one like what happened during the curtain call of Kurosute UB. LOL
I’m fortunate to experience Kurosute with such amazing people. I really treasure the ties we’ve formed.
Taking all that I’ve learned and gained from Kurosute, I will continue to do my utmost best in my life from now onwards.

With roles in popular stage adaptations of popular works like 「Kuroko no Basuke」, 「Osomatsu-san」, 「Oushitsu Kyoushi Heine」and more, and an active member of popular theatrical show-boys entertainment unit 「TOKYO Ryuuseigun」, actor Asato Yuya launched his first photobook 『hAppy』at an advanced Release Event held on 8th June, in Tokyo’s Ochanomizu Sola City Academia.
The fan-awaited 1st photobook was set in America. It is the first time that photography and a ‘Making Of” documentary for the book was conducted while traveling by car from Los Angeles - Death Valley - Las Vegas over a long distance of about 1,400km.
Smart Boys had an exclusive interview chance at the pre-release events. We’ll be asking him to share his feelings and any interesting stories from the photoshoot for his 1st photobook.
Qn 1: Congratulations on the release of your 1st photobook! Firstly, please share with us your thoughts when you heard about news to release a photobook.
Asato: It’s my first photobook so everyone was really happy about the news. Even as it has been finally completed as of now, I still can’t come to terms that I really did it. So when I first heard about this, I was wondering where i’ll be going and what kind of photos will be taken, that sort of feeling.

Qn 2: The photoshoot was held at Los Angeles and Las Vegas, do you have any interesting stories that happened during the photoshoot?
Asato: We travelled around to various places such as Los Angeles and Las Vegas, and we ran into many mishaps such as running out of gas along the way and my pants tearing during the shoot (wry smile). But we were still able to take great photos at these unplanned locations and I was able to show myself in my natural form.

Qn 3: Were you the one who came up with the title『hAppy』for your photobook?
Asato: Although I have considered naming my book “Asato”, the staff suggested me to use “Happy” as the title of the book as I kept saying “Happy! Happy!” during the photoshoot. However, after considering several titles for the book, “hAppy” was chosen as the final title. By the way, I came up with the idea of capitalizing ‘A’ for ‘Asato’.

Question 4: The letter A in the title is in caps, that was your idea, wasn’t it? We think that is a really good title for the book. Would you be able to share what are some of the highlights of this photobook?
Asato: I wasn't planning to set "hAppy" as the theme of the photobook from the beginning, but I was trying to be as natural I as can be during the photoshoot. but it turned out to be “happy” when it was completed, so for those who are reading it, I hope that this happy feeling can spread contagiously.

Qn 5: This is a somewhat off-track question but if you can give a score to your 1st photobook, how many points would『hAppy』get?
Asato: I see, how many points? ...Full marks.

Qn 6: If you are able to do a second photobook, where would you like to set the photoshoot at?
Asato: I don’t think I have any preference location-wise but if I have the chance to decide, I would like to do a photoshoot theme that is far from "hAppy". For example, it would be nice if I could present a "DARK" or "Bad Asato Yuya" photobook (laughs).

Qn 7: Finally, do you have anything to say to your fans?
Asato: For myself, I have been injecting my own feelings of bliss and happiness, so I hope that everyone who sees it will also receive a little bit of happiness and I hope that this happiness will spread.
