Had Az not been inundated with his own grief, he would have seen the living twin jump in her seat when his thighs hit the table. As he bolted, her head buried into her hands, palms pressing into her eyes, trying to erase a playback, trying to quell tears that she just didn’t have anymore. As the world in her head stilled it was was replaced with anger. She was angry for feeling this way still. Angry that Az had to deal with this now. Angry that she couldn’t stop it. She was tired.
She knew she had to follow him. Az may have done his best to protect both twins in school, but Ellie had never really let him - not that it stopped him from doing his best. It was times like this when she would have stood as strong as him. She wasn’t strong now. Not even with the three shots. Especially not with the three shots. She reached across the table and took one of his, looking it in the eyes. Amber glinted like the eye in the dark of the rabbit hole. There was a moment of hesitation, a moment of better not, of drunken sobriety. Then it was gone anyways.
With a deep sigh, she pushed herself up. She didn’t know exactly how long she had given Az on his own, but she wasn’t worried. He would have been gathering himself. He wouldn’t leave her there. She trusted him that much, inherently. She slipped from the table, moving like a liquid. She was starting to feel her insides slosh as she walked outside. She was quiet as she approached Az.
“Hey,” Her voice was soft, standing right in front of him. This quieter Ellie was rare. This gentleness was something perhaps stolen from Vix, but it didn’t change how genuine it was when she opened her arms, leaning towards him for a hug.
Az sighed his vocals quivering reminding him of the way he cried when he was a child, sniffles escaping involuntarily after a fucking good cry. He wrapped his arms around her, his elbows locking together. He needed to feel her close. He closed his eyes as his breathe synced with her heartbeat. The thump-thump, thump-thump engulfed his eardrum mimicking the clap of thunder just a few miles away.
Az soothed quietly at the feel of her fingertips softly rubbing against his back. He could feel the build of conversation imminent. She took in a breathe a smile crossing her features as her body tensed at the beginning of speaking. Their togetherness didn’t feel awkward, but they couldn’t stay out here all night draped upon the other next to a pile of mildewed clothes, broken beer bottles, and rusted dumpsters.
At her words, Az snorted shaking his head against her shoulder as he sat up looking into her identical eyes. El. Vix. They were so different and yet so similar. He hated how identical they were. Especially now, but in some ways, it made him happy to feel her so near. His thumb rubbed her shoulders as he resisted the desire to lean forward, his body closing distance completely with his lips aching for a need to feel her against his bare skin. He tensed. His breath caught briefly as he played it off with a cough and a sniffle.
He looked up at her rolling his eyes. “I can show you some time to-to. Shirt ripping and button popping come with a warning label. Be prepared to melt upon impact.” Az smirked winking at her. His wet eyes glistening in the outdoor artificial luminescence while the moon hid behind a cluster of rooftop shingles and tin tapestry.
Az took in a deep breathe, unwilling to pull away but the need lay present all the same. This was too heavy. Too much for a sober Asbjorn. He needed a drink...or twenty. It was not so suddenly apparent that 2 a.m. would arrive and his need to punch or fuck something would roll by like a much-needed taxi.
