“I don’t think it’s a good idea to be ‘ere. I’m leaving and you should come wit’ me.”
The turnout was more than Mia had expected, and it did nothing to appease her fears that something was going to happen. She found herself eyeing every new person who walked in with skepticism, no matter how unfamiliar they were or how certain anyone could be that they would never start trouble. Rather than actually interacting with people, she walked around the perimeter of the party and down any hallways that led to bathrooms, coat rooms, and the kitchen. If anyone was lurking in a dark corner, she wanted it on her radar. She only paused in her constant motion when she found a mirror spanning the length of a corridor she’d turned down, and she took a moment to address her appearance to ensure everything was properly in place.
“I’m really sorry! I can do a great scourgio spell though that will get that stain right out and then I’ll be back with another tray”

It happened instantly. She was expecting some regrets and drama after midnight, but she wasn’t expecting it so soon. The need to be even remotely professional vanished along with at least half of the party guests. It didn’t take a genius to deduce that wherever they’d gone, it wasn’t going to be pretty once anyone else found their way there. It was only because there were enough familiar faces still present that Poppy didn’t immediately get on a broom and start in whatever direction came to mind. “Shit’s definitely gonna go down,” she declared, though the peace at the hotel hadn’t yet broken. “Stay with me.”
“Yeah, yeah, I’m sure you’ve read all about Noah Sharpe’s Sinister Connection to Knockturn Alley Tragedy by now, but don’t believe everything you read. Do I look like someone who sulks around shady parts of town for my illegal substances? No.”
“Just a sparkling water, even at midnight,” she gave her order to Poppy with resignation. Her feet hurt as they constantly did these days and she wasn’t as confident in the billowing cut of the dress she was wearing as she had been when she tried it on in the shop. It was silly at this point to still be concerned with cleverly cut dresses and robes and concealment charms on her work clothes. Another few weeks and none of that would be enough. She fully expected to explode outward any day. She should have already disclosed at the auror’s office. Four months. It was time to be open, but it still filled her with anxiety.
New Years Eve
I cannot speak in detail as to the feelings of my companions, but I am glad this evening has been attended by so many. I only regret that it took this long for us all to agree to speak, and do away with violence, even if just for an evening.
