i just need to vent somewhere other than in my own mind, so i'm sorry, don't read this if you're sensitive or whatever this is the only social media i don't have family following me on so FUCK I WANT TO DIE the only thing keeping me alive at the moment is my job, upcoming beauty and the beast, and the animals that i know need me i feel so alone, all i've done all vacation is work a little, clean a little, and sleep like I'm so fucking depressed jesus fuck, everyone else is going places and hanging out with their best friends and having fun, and then i'm just home doing nothing. i wonder why i have no close friends sometimes but then i realize it's because i'm such a depressing piece of garbage and i wouldn't want to be friends with me either, i hate myself and then my ocd tells me that if i don't say goodnight to all of my pets, the only thing that really keeps me on my feet, that my pets are going to fucking die overnight, and if i screw up on any of my rituals it's all over for the animal. like fuck i know it's irrational but what if they all die one night because i don't say goodnight to them the right way? then what the fuck do i do, i have nothing left. i just live in this constant state of fear and my mom for some fucking reason hasn't scheduled me another therapy appointment and i don't have my therapist's number so i can't schedule it so i'm building up all this emotion, but i also can't even tell my therapist i want to die because then she has to report me, but like i only want to die, it's not like i'm going to actually do it because my animals need me

Okay You Can Put that in a Bowl

I realized I’ve never shared what may be my favorite story from working in pet care. (If I have, just play along and pretend this is the first time you’ve heard it.)

A dad and his kid (about 8 years old) come in to the fish section, looking for a “cheap” pet, bowl in hand. You know where this is likely going. Of course they ask about the goldfish, and I give my usual spiel about goldfish needing an actual huge tank or pond. AND THEY BOTH LISTEN. WHAT. The dad tells the kid they’ll just need to save up for a pet they can afford.

Well the kid still really wants *some* kind of pet, he doesn’t care what it is. After a few seconds his eyes wander to our cricket bins, and he gets really excited.

“Dad, can I have a pet cricket? Please!” He turns to me, “Can I put a cricket in a bowl?”

Trying not to laugh, I tell him sure, but the cricket will probably jump/crawl out if there’s no lid, so I take them over to the kritter keepers and explain, I dunno, general cricket care.

The dad is a really good sport about this, and so they buy a kritter keeper, some decor for the cricket to climb on, and those water crystals, on the condition that I sell them a nice quiet female cricket. Probably $15 on the luckiest feeder cricket ever.

I wish him and his pet cricket the best.
