So I did some extensive research when I turned 18 on how to adult. This is an incomplete list and I'm still trying to figure it out, but here's what I've accumulated so far. If I missed anything comment below! On a second note I am going to try publishing once a week on Wednesdays. Emphasis on the try part.
This may be the best poem I've ever written - why did I not include tumblr? - because what like even is my tumblr...
When you didn’t study for a test...
I thought.
I thought we could be friends. Based on a similarity of interests and situation. Maybe because you're in the hospital as often as I am Or your sleep schedule is the same fucked up as mine. I thought if we were friends, We would relate. But you spoke behind A small whisper A tide of bother. I thought we could be friends. I suppose I was wrong. __________________________ Written based on a recent personal experience and encounter. Also it's friends day and I think there needs to be some happiness and sadness because relationships are complicated. For a happy post check out my Instagram @ashyevie

it’s a bit serendipitous that the first day of the semester also lands on the first day of february - a month that i find to be a subtle beacon of hope offering the quiet reminder that there is still time. that there’s still polishing to be done on the intricacies, a surplus of chances left to be taken. the weird thing about college that no one really talks about is that the idea of “home” is no longer defined by a set place and your heart starts constructing homes in so many different niches. smooth transitions are nowhere close to being my forte, so time away from one place makes me nostalgic from the other and vice versa. quickly switching between the two takes a definite, exhausting emotional and circumstantial effect, oftentimes digging a rut that i get stuck in for weeks/months at a time. even if the number of miles between homes may not be far-reaching, the distance still manifests itself in bitterness, confusion, and loneliness.
i moved back to biola last night and have already been reminded of how lucky i am to have a community to fall back onto during rocky seasons. what was intended to be a quick trip to a fast food joint turned into a long debrief on what personal spiritual battles had been fought despite external victories over the past six weeks of winter break. as heavy as it is to outwardly acknowledge fears and failures and shortcomings, it gives us the freedom to really, truly do life together. it opens doors to what it really means to love other people. to see the dirt and grime but Jesus’s handiwork all the more.
so maybe my soul will never be at total ease in any physical location, but one thing i do know confidently is that it finds its rest in Christ. in seasons that feel like you’re just trying to swim against the current or ones where everything seems stagnant and unmoving, He is still working closely in your heart and is intimately involved in every aspect of your becoming. in the middle of your unending identity crises and relational inconsistencies, He calls you his beloved son/daughter. see what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God. (1 john 3:1)
today i walked through campus having and hearing joyful reunions, smiled and hugged, was swept up in the excitement for new projects + classes, and danced in the sunlight streaming into my dorm room. i hope you find that joy, that strength to pick up the weight of january and move forward with beaming eyes.
happy february.
