English 101

Final Reflection Paper

I had just previously finished English 90 before starting this class for second semester. When this class started I thought it was going to be essay after essay but even though it didn’t have a lot of essay there were a lot of small things that collectively made the class hard to do. Somethings that I will be talking about that I improved, stayed the same, or didn’t improve on is writing, communication, and reading. Writing for me in this class was a lot different than any other English class I did. I did a lot of responding, breaking down what happened, and filtering out what ideas where in the text or video etc. that we were looking at. Communication in this class for me didn’t get better because the professor never really looked up at the students and didn’t always explain things clearly if asked a question or just at the beginning of the class. Reading, it didn’t come to a surprise that I would be doing a lot of reading for an English class so, when I did all those discussion board assignments it constantly kept me thinking about whatever it was we were doing that day. For example, when we had to figure out ethos, pathos, and logos in a speech. Throughout this semester I feel that because the professor’s inability to keep communication as a priority, but always having the class thinking with nearly daily discussion board problems, and writing nearly daily helped me improve in two of the three main ideas.

When it comes to the Rhetorical Knowledge category, the outcomes had a positive effect on my progression throughout the semester. First, analyze and respond to the needs of different audiences and rhetorical contexts, throughout the semester. I have seen and done this because of the discussion board but also because the movie critic assignment on the movie Black Panther. In my movie critic I say “The director of this movie Ryan Coolger gives a different aspect to movie making with the cast of this movie being mostly African American with only two key characters being white. The way Ryan Coolger puts the architectural and technological advances in this movie visually really puts an image in my head of a true fantasy world that anyone would want to be a part of”. In this I sum up how the director Ryan Coolger really does a great job introducing aspects into a movie well awaited. I show how much I know this category with my in-depth unwrapping and explaining of the key reasons why this movie did so good. For this outcome making rhetorical choices consistent with a controlling purpose. I can show you when I worked on my personal essay. For this part of my essay I said, “I immediately screamed as I saw a stick in my right hand with blood everywhere”. I put this in my essay because I first started off with how traumatic of an experience it was. I feel this shows how I dealt with this outcome. lastly, recognize basic elements of persuasive and argumentative writing (appeals, claims, reasons, evidence, etc.). With the two artifacts that I have I have nothing to show how well or not that I did this but for my position paper I feel that I did ok on this sense I got an A on the paper.

Critical Thinking/ Reading was probably one of the more harder categories for me to improve on over the semester. One of this categories outcome was read texts actively and analytically, identifying the purpose(s) and audience(s) for which a given text has been constructed. This outcome had a good effect on me because of my movie critic assignment on the Black Panther movie. When I said, “This Plot is giving this movie outstanding revenue at almost $400 million, that’s $200 million over their movie budget” and “All the ideas shown by the director Ryan Coolger explains why this movie got a staggering 97% on rotten tomatoes”. In these examples you can see that I explain how because of what was in the movie showed extremely good results. As for making informed connections and distinctions among others' ideas as well as between one's own ideas and those of others, I feel that because of my movie critic I performed adequately. When I said, “The Black Panther movie has loads of fighting, comedy that is on the same demographic as its viewers, and drama that got me and will get others watching this movie off their seat every time they watch this movie”. As you can see I showed a distinction in the aspects in the movie and what that will do to the person watching the movie. Lastly, Understand knowledge and information as existing within a broader situational and cultural context. When it comes to this I don’t think I did this this semester with the two artifacts that I have.

The researching/ writing category I feel had a little improvement on me because I already have a strong idea on the category. one of the outcomes was to Understand and practice writing as a recursive and strategic process, utilizing prewriting/invention, drafting, revising, and editing. With my personal essay I utilized this outcome when I looked over it again to edit anything that seemed wrong. What I saw where all these grammar errors that if I didn’t look at before my essay would sound wrong every so often. For understanding the collaborative nature of writing, and demonstrate the ability to critique one's own work and the work of peers. I fell that I met this outcome because every time we did a big assignment we would critique others. For example, in our personal essays, we all had to critique other classmate’s essays. The last outcome learn the basics of academic research, I feel that I meet this outcome because of my midterm essay where I got 4 different sources. I learned how and where to get good credible sources, how to make them in the right format, and how to analyze them.

Throughout the semester in class we very often had discussions on many things so with all that and more the Academic Writing Conventions category had much improvement for me. For the last category the outcome, understand what it means to join an academic "conversation" on a topic. In class it felt like everyday we would go on the discussion board and talk with the people around us about the topic at hand. For example, when we were coming up with our ideas we had a talk with the person next to us about what we were going to talk about. Another outcome would be use conventions of structure, style, grammar, mechanics, and format appropriate to the rhetorical situation. For the personal essay I used or at least tried my best to use proper format, grammar, etc. with every paragraph. To show for this I said in my personal essay” My brother and I decided to go to their house, a couple houses down, because it was a nice day out (had to be in the summertime), barely a breeze, and they were the only kids that were around my brother and I’s age”. This shows me including my commas in the right way and the certain style of explaining what I was doing.

Throughout this semester I feel that because the professor’s inability to keep communication as a priority, but always having the class thinking with nearly daily discussion board problems, and writing nearly daily helped me improve in two of the three main ideas. This semester there have been a lot of ups and downs academically for me but, I feel that I learned a great deal more from when I started out in the semester. If I have to learn anything from my mistakes it would be to take more out of what I get for research and critically think more thoroughly and accurately.

My name is Shawn Aschenbrenner and this is my brief but spectacular take on why football is more than a sport. Football is obviously a popular sport for many but they only like it for the popularity and the skill of the players and or team. For me it is a lot of people students or not with the same mentality helping others become better people and release the days struggles and get in better shape. football helped me forget about bad things that have happened to me in that day or the days before. the coaches are there to help you and mentor you with whatever you need. In the beginning you might think it’s just a bunch of people trying to gain muscle and hit other people but its people trying to do better in their life. Hitting people might be a main reason but it’s your grades and your behavior outside of the sport and or in school. If you love football you would be forced to try and do good in school with your grades. If you physically or mentally try and hurt someone that will reflect on you and your football life. Football helped me become a better person because of my previous failing grades, and my social behavior towards others good or bad.

Im shawn and this is my brief but spectacular take on football being more than a sport.

This Happened?!

In my lifetime I have had a lot of ups and downs no matter what it may have been but when my hand had a stick in it I have to say, that was the bloodiest thing I have ever encountered. I was the scariest thing for me and the most dangerous thing that happened to me.

You see my family and grandparents co- own a condo in a place called door county and we went there and are still going there very often but when I was younger, there were two kids that me and my older used to play with. I don't remember their names but it was a boy and girl and the girl was older than the boy. Me and my brother decided to go to there house a couple houses down because it was a nice day out (had to be in the summertime) barely a breeze.

So when me and my brother got to their house they weren't doing anything just that we all had to behave because their parents had a couple of their friends over for something. So for a little while we played on their PS2 and played medal of honor and once we were done playing that we decided to go outside and sword fight with branches and have duals, you know little kids stuff. So we were out their playing and I got my stick, otherwise know as my sword, hit out of my hand so while they were all fighting each other I quickly and in a hurry reached out to a tree that we all broke our swords off from and tried to get a grip on the closest branch when I realized that when I reached for the branch someone had previously broke a portion of it off and left a point when instead of grab the side of the branch, I grab the pointy end.

I immediately screamed as I saw a stick in my right hand with blood everywhere, when my two friends and brother heard me they came over to help me. My brother frantically ran home to get our parents while my two friends went to their parents for help. Everyone their was very scared, all together no one by me was over 8 or 9. By this point the stick fell out of my hand because it wasn't very huge but it sure wasn't a splinter. I was standing on the porch alone because my friends didn't want blood in the house and they all left to get help. So as I was bleeding out my friends parents and their friends came to me and lucky for one of them was a nurse so they quickly helped me, and by they finished stopping the blood my family came to me. An ambulance would have taken too long to get there so my family and grandparents all got in my dad's truck and went speeding out of town.

Door County the town I was in doesn't have a 24 hour hospital so we had to go 45 minutes to the nearest hospital to get me help. I needed about 10 stitches but didn't have to stay overnight at the hospital, we were just there really late. To this day I still have the scar on my hand showing me to not rush to get a fake weapon but to take my time and be thankful it just pierced my hand and nothing else. Sense then I have never had blood come out of me, at least not on accident. This really made me realize how if your not careful with what your doing with other or around you. After this day have have been very hesitant with what i did when i played outside or even played around trees when i was outside.

1) she has convinced me that it matters but I probably will not comply. she established a great deal of importance because of all her research, facts, or examples for her topic but I would not do this because of how hard it would be to do this.

2) one of these is the third world country job loss, she response to this with though that would be bad, this would bring a new conversation to environmentalism for the united states. another argument is that why try and grow certain fruits in places where they don't grow best, and she says buying local should making you want to buy as much as possible from that farm. another argument is that small farms are not as efficient compared to larger farms, she says it’s a common misconception and how overall large farms are more efficient but per acre small farms are more efficient.

3)"Buying local benefits smaller famers by not forcing them to compete with larger farms across the country. For example, if consumers bought beef local, beef cattle would be raised in every region and their meats would be sold locally rather than shipped from a small number of ranches in Texas and Montana" she makes this persuasive because of how she presents this to the reader. making the reader feel how real, costly, or just time costly the whole process could be.

4) these pictures contribute to her argument because it demonstrates how big farms are. They also show how many semi-trucks are on the roads making you think of what having all those trucks on the roads could do to everyone else in terms of traffic or pollution.

5) On buying locally, I overall disagree along with many others for really one reason, at least only one that I can think of really. people generally are pretty lazy in America and to have the option to pick a food that they may not like verses pick a food that they like but is from far away they will generally go towards what they like verses the environment or other factors like that, saying all the foods are in front of them right there and then. the only thing I can see that would change this idea would be the pricing of the food.

The mutt rescue website is a easy to navigate thought website. It shows an adorable dog that makes you wanna stay on the website. I feel that this website has good intentions and a good handle on their website. They have a good ideas with their organization of what to look for and what to want to know. The only thing I would have them fix is that their should be more dog pictures.

The Death Penalty

In my rough draft I had a page missing so I went in and finished my essay to begin with. Also, my sentence structure of how I was introducing my topic was a little redundant, so I had to go in and put some new ideas in and take some old ideas out. Other than that, I just had to fix up some obvious grammar mistakes that I missed.

The United States is ranked fifth for the highest number of executions, considering only 21 countries even carried out with the death penalty last year that is an outstanding number. There are many people that consider the death penalty to be cruel and not called for but there are those that consider it meaningful or upholding justice to those that break the law. This is a very controversial topic because there are peoples lives that loved ones may never see again. The death penalty has been around since the 18th century and it being that long there has been many times where people despised it a lot and there has been times where people really liked it. The death penalty in words would be expensive and brutal but also justice. In my opinion though I would lean more towards justice.

The death penalty prompts the question of why we spend $3 million to maintain and eventually kill the person. According to the article The High Cost of the Death Penalty it says “In Texas, a death penalty case costs taxpayers an average of $2.3 million, about three times the cost of imprisoning someone in a single cell at the highest security level for 40 years”. Through the 5 states that use the death penalty the cost only gets higher with the article saying further on with “The New York Department of Correctional Services estimated that implementing the death penalty would cost the state about $118 million annually”. These two key pieces of information tells us that we the citizens can either say and do nothing and let literally millions of dollars of citizens hard earned money go to a wrongfully used system, or we could stand up and let the government know that they will not use the taxpayer’s money so wastefully but instead spend it on something more needed. To have a state like New York have to spend $118 million dollars yearly is outrageous and uncalled for when there are other ways to serve justices to an unlawful person. Some of these ways wound be prison for life or a mental institute if the person fits that category. Some may say that there isn’t a lot of these cases so the money being used won’t affect the economy or the states budget that much, well there have been 40 death penalty cases in the past 5 years in Texas. If you do the math that is $92 million dollars, now imagine if that money could have gone to health care or public services like the police or construction.

There is another word that directly describes the death penalty and that word is cruel. In an article out of the USA today website said “… last week took nearly two hours to execute convicted double- murderer Joseph Rudolph Wood, during most of which time he appeared to witnesses to be gasping for breath and grunting in pain”. It went on to talk about how the people watching him were filled with joy to see him struggle and be in so much pain. After reading this I felt disgusted because of how people reacted to how cruel Josephs death was turning out to be. In America its said in the constitution that you will not have a cruel or unusual punishment but with how that death row victim died, that was nothing short of cruel. Yes, Joseph Rudolph Wood was a murderer, a double murderer in his case, but everyone should have a sense of guilt whenever someone is in Josephs shoes going through what he endured that day.

On the flip side the death penalty has another side to it, like justice. There was an article in time magazine about a victim of the Boston marathon bombings that spoke out about what happened, “you cant use a weapon of mass destruction in the United states and not think that if you succeed, you’re going to face a federal jury and the possibility of the death penalty.” also she said, “Many of the survivor community feel like the death penalty offers a sense of justice being done”. She comes out saying what every person that agrees with the death penalty are thinking, you can’t intend on killing people and not expect to see a judge or the death penalty. This just comes to show that not everyone that is affected by a mass killing feels that there should be forgiveness for those that intend on doing bad. When some that has affected the lives of dozens or hundreds, it really doesn’t matter the number, he will not have the sympathy or reliance on others to get him out of the trouble he is in.

The death penalty in words would be expensive and brutal but also justice. In my opinion though I would lean more towards justice. From what I’ve learned is that the negatives for the death penalty would have to mainly do with how ridiculously expensive it is to uphold and maintain the criminal and to kill the criminal. Also, the fact that sometimes the when the death penalty is going on there can be a problem making it last longer and making it crueler for the criminal about to die. Though it is a very bad out come for the criminal to have to endure all the pain it has a very small chance that a death row victim would have to go through a 2-hour death process or even longer or a little shorter. On the other side for the victims and families of the mass shootings or any other traumatic event, it is very favorable for them to see the person that caused all that death intentionally to go through all the pain he caused for every single person he/she killed or hurt. Over all I feel that I’m sticking with my opinion on still having the death penalty because of the relief and justice it gives to the victims and their families.

1. All 6 students have good reason or good valid points that go back to the article. From all these students stories they all have something in common, they all common form some sort of a rural background wither it be no computer access, no belief in colleges by family and friends, no money for college.

2. I feel that Autumn, john, and Ryan want to move away and start their new lives and their careers after college. I feel Richard has the best chance because of how smart he is and his determination for his future in big schools. Emily will probably not go to college because she is used to her hometown and life style. Amanda is already in college but with how her family is they wouldn't liked certain colleges but going to college made her realize that she is not a liberal like her family but a conservative.

Dear Autumn,

College is a fun experience that can be easy for you if you make friends early on and work together with people on things you believe are tough. In college there are many people, many different types of people, you will find people related to your roots. If you love college and have fun it will go fast and sooner or later you will see your family again, yet you don't have to wait for the nearest break from school, you could also call them, send letters, or text them if they are or your are feeling home sick.

Black Panther a Movie That Did More Than Set Records

The movie Black Panther is about how prince T’ Challa son of the now deceased king T’ Chaka must handle his country after his father’s murder, struggling to gain the support of his dearest friend and finds himself in a corner as a new threat is on the verge of destroying all loves dear to him and possible his whole country.

The characters in this movie T’Chaka, otherwise known as the black panther. He is a respectful, loyal, obedient, and humble person that does what is best for his country. Next would be his family; T’ Chaka is his father and past king before he died, Shuri is T’ Challas younger sister and she is smart and a smart as to more than just her family, and lastly Romanda T’ Challas mother she is a priest but a respectful woman. Someone whos is basically family to T’ Challa is Nakia T’ Challas lover who is also a spy with great fighting talent. The two villains of the movie would be Klau a thief and a killer that sells what he steals to the highest bidder and Erik Killmonger the son or an outlawed family member in Wakanda and a very good killer as he worked with American special forces before coming to Wakanda. All these characters play a crucial role in what the outcome of this movie will be.

This movie starts out with King T’ Chaka meeting his little brother when spying on the American public and finding out that he has betrayed his country and his family because of the very precious metal called Vibranium. Because of this first scene I could tell that this metal that the Wankandens have will be the main reason of all the drama in this movie because of all the technological advances that the Waknadens have because of this. All the ideas shown by the director Ryan Coolger explains why this movie got a staggering 97% on rotten tomatoes.

The Theme of this flash mob is celebration for homecoming for the student athlete's and students as a whole for the upcoming homecoming day. The steps the teachers probably went through to prepare for this was to come in really early some days and stay really late some days to practice for the dancing. It was probably hard to hide from all the student to practice for this.

The theme in this flash mob was to have the man end up proposing to his lady. the preparation that went into this was the man reaching out to professional or just dancers that want to help a guy out. Once the people got picked out they all had to meet and learn the routine that they would have to dance to. This would probably take them a month for the people to know when to come into the flash mob, all the steps to the dance, and when to start.

The theme of this flash mob is to celebrate there graduation in a fun and surprising way. There coordination for this must have been a headache because some one would of had to either follow his fellow students social media or get their numbers. they would of had to all meet in a big enough area to practice and know there dance routine.

Marriage Proposal

What I found when I researched marriage proposals is that there are a couple different ways people propose their girlfriend. First is it is in public for all to see and they have probably put a lot of money and time into it. The second one is that the guy has a relaxing, smooth and not public proposal like in a favorite spot or location. Lastly there are the people that go to dinner or somewhere relaxing or somewhere where you would look fairly well dressed. After researching this I asked my dad how he proposed to my mom and he was more of the well dressed scenario. He took my mom out to a fancy dinner and once they were finished with their meals he walked over to her chair and kneeled and proposed. There are many factors that go into a proposal like where its going to be, how big the ring is, and trying to make sure she doesn't know so that there is a surprise. Out of all of these I can see that the money doesn't matter when proposing but its how sentimental the proposal is that people will truly remember it for.
