Sharing this on my main because it appears from the notes that it's useful for some modern viewers.

You KNOW classic SF used the limited displays of CRT television and the static of transmitted signals the way theaters use stage makeup and lighting to make inexpensive props look great fine— take advantage of the medium! But it's hard to imagine how it looked if you've only seen Blu-ray HD restorations.

There's a gambit I've seen a few times where you don't want some nascent concept/movement to spread, so you give some bullshit reason that the name most often used for it is bad, and then recommend a different, worse name that will never catch on, hopefully taking the concept down with it. Here it is being used in a reader-submitted essay in Gay Community News titled "The Myth of the Feminist Male".

Of course, she doesn't really care about the "grammatical meaning" of feminist, or else she would notice that feminist does not mean "a female who practices being a female", and also would probably know the meaning of terms like "verb". That's not the point. She doesn't want a better name for men in the feminist movement, she wants men to not be in the feminist movement.

If men want to help women gain equal rights and prevent rape and violence against women they can begin by stepping off the coattails of the women's movement.

Nobody who calls themself a "male feminist" would be receptive to the name change proposal because it's so obvious from the above quote (and the title of the essay, and really everything else about the essay except the specific paragraph in the screenshot) that she does not want their movement to flourish.

Modern users of this gambit tend to be savvier. They'll say of course I support you and your activism, but...

They'll write their actual reasons they're against the concept/movement in a different essay.
