I've been interested in this for a very long time now, but how much do people in fandoms care about the "order" of a ship name? An example:

Hinata x Kageyama = Kagehina OR Hinakage

Usually I find that the order of a ship name is used to show the dynamic of a ship. The first name in the ship name (e.g. Kage) is the top/dominant one, and the second name (e.g. Hina) is the bottom/submissive.*

In the context of polyamory, I've seen the same rule apply, except the character(s) who's name(s) is/are in the middle is/are usually a mix of the two possible dynamics (e.g. top/sub, bottom/dom) or something else entirely.

This is useful in the context of smut, where position and dom/sub dynamics are often relevant, but in a non-sexual context this is more so associated with stereotypical dynamics. It tells you who in the ship is the more stereotypically masculine one or more feminine one, or who is less masculine or feminine. This often presents a need to put ships into boxes of ship dynamic, not uncommonly reducing the actual dynamic that the characters have to a stereotype that "fits them."

Alternatively, one solution I've seen that aims to be more inclusive is this:

Kaiser x Ness = Kainesskai

This option puts together "Kainess" and Nesskai" to create a ship name that includes both dynamics and is open to interpretation.

So, my question is:

Participating in my own poll, why not

I choose the ship name based on which one is most popular and then use it for any dynamic, since I don't want it to restrict me. I find that the many ship names for one ship can get rather annoying for people who don't associate them with a dynamic, like myself, and rather go by what sounds/feels better or is more popular. The most annoying part is tagging, but also I don't want people to think I have a preference just because I only use one ship name (this doesn't mean I don't have a specific dynamic for them in mind, I just don't want to indicate it in which name I use).

Uhh a good example of a ship I like where the order is made redundant by their dynamic is Leokasa. Tsukasa and Leo's dynamic is about equality, so to use the ship name to indicate who's more "dominant" would be taking away complexity from their characters and their relationship.

Predictions for the ship name poll I just set loose, based on fandom:

Blue Lock fandom is either gonna care too much or not at all. I mean, based on the "order" Isagi is always in the "bottom/submissive" role unless you purposefully switch the ship name

Witch Hat Atelier fans are gonna resonate deeply with the "putting a ship into a stereotypical dynamic box" part because of the recent growth in the fanbase (meaning the increase of Orufrey fans) since the anime release

Link Click mmm.... Probably the same as Witch Hat Atelier, since the show is way too complex to just be reduced to stereotypical ship dynamics. It's more popular than WHA though, so more people are probably gonna care about the order of a ship name

It's been so long since I've looked at the Bungo Stray Dogs fandom, but based on memory they're gonna care. A lot.

Okay I think I might have actually given myself some form of lactose intolerance from years of not drinking milk and now I'm not sure whether it's worth going to my doctor or if I should just ignore it

I haven't felt like drawing for a while now, but today I felt the urge to draw Naru-chan. For my first time drawing her, I'd say she turned out well, even if the hair looks strange. Her eye and hair colours caused me to have a little crisis though, because her sprite doesn't use flat colours there

This makes sense, Hiorin is always my favourite and Kainess are definitely my second favourite (shoutout to No Need to Say it, though the fic has been deleted it is still my favourite Kainess story)

I need it to be known though that Isagi x Yukki is a CRACK SHIP that just makes me laugh too much not to choose them (I think I picked them over Kunigiri once...)

My sister recently told me that for her every task, from small to big, has the same priority in her mind, which is an ADHD thing. It was really eye opening to me because until then I didn't know why I had trouble getting myself to talk to friends or do something I really wanted to do or even just washing my face in the evening

Anyway, sometimes I just have too much energy (I like to describe it as feeling high, but I don't know what a high actually feels like) and so I sometimes make to-do lists so that I know what I want to do and don't forget

Yeah this ALL holds the exact same priority in my mind... It's so annoying. I'll try organising them a bit to figure out what I can get done quickly and what needs more time/mental energy
