She’d had her nose in a book full of arias, humming the melodies under her breath, when she’d heard the distant call of her name– and then she’d turned just in time to see Asher fall into the lake, sinking like a stone. “Ash!”
Bubbles surfaced, but not him: a beat, and she’d abandoned her sheet music, Eve running straight for him. She ripped off her T-shirt as she ran, then slipped out of her skirt, Eve thankfully already barefoot.
A second crash, and she was beneath the surface of the water too, Eve diving down, down, down..
She could make out the faint shape of him tumbling towards the bottom, and while it wasn’t the deepest of waters, she couldn’t see the tell-tale signs of him trying to swim. Eve glanced at the darkness surrounding them, and then she glanced up – where the sun was waiting.
A column of light struck the surface of the water, piercing through, spiraling down towards them as Eve took hold of Asher, and began to drag him up.
Eve’s breath was ragged as she gasped for air, her arms around Asher’s chest as her legs propelled them towards land. “Ash– use your legs, c’mon!”
Ash’s cheeks were comically puffed as he held his breath, sinking like an anchor in water down to the bottom. The adrenaline coursing through him did little in the way of helping him to hold his breath and soon bubbles escaped his mouth as necessity forced him to exhale so that he could take in new air. Only, the reflex didn’t understand the whole under water issue. The demigod thrashed as best he could but no amount pushed him upward, until he felt something tug him up, his eyes opened and he saw someone. Someone had come for him! His hair floated around him like dark wisps of seaweed and then he was breaking the surface, gasping for air and coughing when a bit of water came with it. “ I’m tryin’ ” He wheezed, thrashing his legs this way and that like he was climbing stairs.
The minute they hit dry land, the moment he could feel the ground beneath him, he dropped down to lay on it. “ Thanks. ” He coughed some more, then groaned, head still spinning as his hangover ignored his near death experience. “ I was lookin’ for you. ”
