Immigrants in My Life
There are so many reasons as to why people migrate from their home countries. At times they may be refugees, and other time they may just want a different life. Seeing the future they have if they stay compared to the future that they could have if they migrate is what truly influences their final decision.
I interviewed a 53 year old woman who is an immigrate, born and raised in Kenya. There were so many factors that played a role in her decision to leave her home. She did not have a bad home life, but she wanted better and she knew she could reach her dreams. She had already been going to school in Kenya, but wanted to further her education. She came to America for school and work. She had already been playing basketball for the college she attended in Kenya, but this is not what she wanted for her future, even though she enjoyed it. She went to school for a couple of years and soon got a job as an IT at NJ Turnpike and has been working there ever since.
Another reason this woman and her husband chose to move to America was for their family. They wanted to start a family and knew their children would have more opportunities in America. Before they came, the woman's siblings had already settled in America. This made things a lot easier for her and her husband once they arrived. They did not have to worry about many things like a place to stay and they were also gifted with a car which made getting around so much easier for them. Being here in America, they made sure that their 2 daughters had a good education, putting them on the right path for the future. Most of this woman's family came to America before she did, giving her even more reason to join them-reunification.
This woman's husband had all of the same reasons for migrating to America, wanting a better life for himself and his family. Immigrants are put on one of the hardest paths, yet they were able to persevere and give us the best they could.
