Singing in Colors by Ashley Vasquez

In Progress Picture: Outside Lightening:

Materials: Acrylic paints, pouring medium, mixing bottles, plastic cups, paint brushes, plastic cover, canvas, plastic spoon (mix materials), and glittered acrylic paint.

Inspired by Jackson Pollock’s “drip paintings” and acrylic pouring on Tik Tok, I was motivated to create my own version of a painting. I began by gathering my materials. I went to the store and got a canvas, pouring medium and four different acrylic paints. Once I got home, I placed a plastic tarp underneath my canvas so nothing would spill on the ground. I then gathered a bottle where I added my pouring medium into each paint color and mixed these consistencies. The pouring medium had a silicone material that would help create bubbles as this changed the fluids viscosity. After, we poured each colored paint into a plastic cup, with the teal paint first, then the white, rose gold, and then the red. I repeated a different order in the next pour, and this created a mixture of paints in the cup.  I filled two cups up with the paint mixture and then poured one diagonally from the bottom right corner and the other from the top left corner. Quickly the canvas was filled with splashes, bubbles, and different patterns and mixtures of paint. It was really cool to see the paints mix and come to form a very loud yet complex nonrepresentational painting. I then let the canvas sit and dry overnight. The next day, I felt like something that represented me was missing. I noticed that while I was working on my painting, I was listening to Taylor Swift’s music non-stop. I realized that I wanted to incorporate a reference to Ms. Swift, and I decided to print a Taylor Silhouette of her singing in the eras tour. I had to edit the silhouette before printing it to make sure it would be of great proportion to my canvas. After editing, I cut out the silhouette and then traced it with my pencil. I then went onto trace the pencil lines with a sharpie, and then paint the outline with black matte paint. After I waited for the black paint to dry, I went in with a different brush and used a sparkly glitter acrylic paint over that area. After doing all that, I went over it with a clear topcoat, to seal in the paints. I loved how my painting Singing in Colors turned out, and admire the contrast of textures and patterns, colors, and shimmers.

My canvas features the form of acrylic pouring and painting. It is a representation to honor my admiration of Taylor Swift as well as make my own version and interpretation of a “drip painting.” I refer to the different textures, patterns, and colors as my thoughts that are just running around in my mind. Acrylic pouring is something I have been wanting to try and this was a perfect way for me to try it out. I look forward to making more in the future and customizing them further.

#1 Writing, Thinking, and Looking Critically:

Although Jackson Pollock studied with Thomas Hart Benton, he was not a huge fan of representational art. He instead found a connection with rhythmic structure and contrast of light in dark, which is what his original work began with. His admiration of artists such as Picaso, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro featured the style of original European modernism that included abstract imagery. During this time, artists also focused on the implemented techniques of airbrushing, flinging of paint, and controlled accidents, which I believe to have guided Pollock’s techniques with drip painting. Jackosn’s interest with native American art shaped his art style, since one native exhibition featured a demo of dropping colored sand of the ground. Pollock’s first works were archaic like, featuring rhythmic structures, contrasting color, and abstract imagery similar to that of native culture. These original works performed well which motivated him to continue exploring with these techniques leading him to discover drip paintings. His new place outside of the city also allowed him to work with more space including the ground which led him to his new painting style. His original works were explorations of him trying to discover his own technique and with time he finally felt comfortable to just represent the true form of his material and ideas on a canvas which resulted in his drip paintings. His famous drop paintings also seemed to stem from a sober place within him that was battling sobriety with alcohol.

Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti as Venus

The painting Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti as Venus, made byNoel-Nicolas Coypel, is an oil on canvas that is 54.3 by 42 inches big and currently featured at the Ringling Museum of Arts. Coypel’s painting is a portrait of Elisabeth de Bourbon, Princess of Conti, who was quite beautiful and a subject of much attraction, as clearly depicted. The painting has the allure of a bright dream-like outside scenery alongside flowers and flowing silks that quickly catch people’s attention. There is a trend of light pastel colors such as light pink and white garments, a baby blue sky, and pale colors that highlight the pampered life of French court. Baby cupids also adorn Princess Elisabeth with pretty flowers, which remind the audience of her youth and charismatic charm. Coypel and Elisabeth clearly worked on creating her public image to feature this delicacy and goddess of love illusion through the balance of colors, dimensions, and rococo fragility. Being a fan of the Rococo style drew me into this painting, and while deeply inspecting it, I was reminded of feelings of love, attraction, and even womanhood because of the delicacy and love illusion imbedded within the oils, which I believe is exactly what Elisabeth and Coypel intended the audience to feel.

 The Portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti is associated with the Rococo art style and was painted during the Enlightenment (18th century). Although the Enlightenments focused on scientific learning and philosophical ideas of life, liberty, and separation of church and power, there was a popular appeal with elite members communicating their wealth through rococo- styled art, interior design, architecture, and more (2.1 Shifting Sensibilities: The Enlightenment and Rococo, ART 188). Princess Elisabeth, being an enlightenment follower herself, illustrated this dramatic shift from the previous baroque style into the lively rococo style when depicting herself. She and Coypel worked on illustrating her image far away from the remote, aloof, and formal style into this delicacy, lighthearted elegance conveyed through light and pastel colors (portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti). Understanding the imagery and alluring beauty of this painting tells the audience that Coypel enjoyed painting natural beauty and depicting love and its allure through lightness and asymmetrical pose. Ringling described it as “This Rococo pose reminds us of the change and fragility that love encounters” (portrait of Madame de Bourbon-Conti). The message of great shift and nature beauty found with youth and bright accent is illustrated throughout the painting for the audience to see, as is the image of Elisabeth as a playful and charming goddess. There are also references to how the elite's pampered life and wealth through luscious silks and pearls. There are many references and illustrations to convey the message clearly.

Overall, I think the importance of this art is to bring a different perspective to a changing society. I think it creates this idealized perspective of wealth, love, and beauty. There is something about its specific naturalistic complexity, such as the princesses’ beauty compared to previous works of art, that makes it attractive; however, there’s also referenced to love with baby cupids and imaginary figures. I believe this painting was made to catch the audience’s attention to this dream-like scenery and entice us with beauty while reminding us of love. As a woman, I particularly felt drawn to its beauty.

JOURNALING:

Unity-  similar, coming to form 1, consistent

Variety- multiple options, diversity

Balance- the equal and peaceful area between opposing things, order, symmetry/ asymmetry

Emphasis- centering something by enhancing and drawing attention

Subordination- taking away attention from, displacing something to make it undistracting

Directional forces- arrows and path drawn up, guidance

Repetition- same thing happening again, or reoccurrence

Rhythm- regularly occurring, customs happening over and over again

Scale- sizing and comparing the size of things to each other

Proportion- comparison of sizes of things to each other when composed as a whole

Examples of unity and variety can be seen at a supermarket, where there is a variety of different scales and brands of crackers all in a section of the store creating unity by all of them being placed in an aisle. I think working around a busy schedule and finding a way to work, attend school, and maintain a social life is an example of balance I see and personally experience every day. The roads I drive on daily guide me and create directional forces to my destination. The stop light at the entrance of my neighborhood follows a rhythm or order of who can go, with the main road turning on first then my neighborhood, and lastly the street across. This order is also always occurring or repeating no matter how crowded one street can get. When simply eating dinner, our pates are made up of different food group proportions. Someone asking to read outload in class is an example of them emphasizing their existence. The stage crew behind a play is vital yet hidden or subordinated since they are often overlooked as the audience draws their attention to the actors and play.

2. CONNECTING ART TO YOUR WORLD:

Color to me has always been taught to be used as a way to express emotions. There are certain color hues that I view to be associated with happy emotions such as yellow and gold, while I associate red and pink with love and blues and greys with sadness. However,  the saturation or intensity of a color can change my perspective of it, such as light blue and dark blue. I associate dark blue with sadness or maturity while light blue is more fun and younger. To me the value of a color can really change and define the depth and strength of a figure, creating something beyond what is just seen as a 3-dimensional illusion. Colors are a way for me to illustrate and explain my emotions without using words, as they can describe and depict subjects, moods, light, depth, and much more.

If I had to pick a color scheme for my life, I would pick green primarily hunter green. Not only do I love this color, but it suits my physical features. More importantly, I love and am drawn to nature which is why I would describe myself with that color. It is a color that illustrates feelings of balance, health, and growth, or at least the vibe I get from it. Although my life can get pretty busy, it is balanced in its own way, and I feel at my prime health being that I am just 18 years old who is just beginning to experience life for the first time with a distinct perspective. Lastly, the color hunter green gives calming and prosperous energy which is how I would describe my life now as I am super excited for my future after high school.

I know these logos as I am familiar with them since they are constantly in my surroundings. For example, my phone is an iPhone which means I see the apple logo constantly. I see the HP logo on the regular since I own an HP computer. My little brother loves building Legos and leaving them everywhere which means I see the Lego logo constantly. I work at CVS, so I am reminded by the CVS pharmacy heart logo as its on my uniform. My workout clothes is also from the two most popular sport brands, Nike and Adidas.

My understanding of the value of logos is that a visual symbol can help make a brand easily recognizable. However, a logo is much more than just a representation of a company, it is also their reputation, identity, and uniqueness. If two logos were too similar to each other people would confuse them or not really define the logo for either company as its not as unique. It is also important for a logo to have a well-known and defined logo that people are attracted to and hold the right values. I think a logo is one of the most important things of a company.

Writing and Research:

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley Vasquez. I am 18 years old and will be graduating high school with my associates, all in hopes of pursuing a career in medicine. A fun fact about me is that I am heavily involved in my community, particularly the Boys and Girls Club. In fact, I was named the 2022 Youth of the Year for my local Club, and I have represented my club in Anaheim, California. This spring, I may even be able to go on a cultural immersion trip to South Africa or Hungary with my peers and the Club.

For this discussion, I was assigned Hieronymus Bosch’s The Garden of Earthly Delights. The following are some of the things I have learned about Hieronymus Bosch.

Not much is known about artist Hieronymus Bosch as his writings did not survive history. The lack of information and understanding of Bosh’s life has left his artwork for lively debate.

The painting was made over 500 years ago, or at least that is what historians have estimated since Hieronymus didn’t date his paintings.

Historians placed The Garden of Earthly Delights at a town palace of the Counts of the House of Nassau in Brussels, where heads of state and court figures visited, leading them to know that the painting was already highly valued at the time. Other indicators of its success were the tapestry and painted copies made of the work after his death.

The paintings panels are said to be read like a book, from left to right.

Bosch’s vision was highly fantastical, with a strong moral message that made his work extremely popular. The imaginative quality in his work had a significant effect on the development of Surrealism in the 20th century.

If I am going to be honest, I originally found The Garden of Earthly Delights weird. However, it was strangely weird in the sense that it captured my attention and hunger to learn more about this art piece and the artist. Its strange human-like appearances and miniature fantasy-like world was creepy to me, but after researching more about the painting I was able to understand it more. After learning about the paintings message, the significance of the colors, fruits, and hidden music aspects stood out to me. The painting’s message was always there, it was just hidden beneath all these layers of creative and intriguing depictions. I learned the depth found in art with The Garden of Earthly Delights and realized that the painting’s weirdness was what made it so unique.

2. Art and Writing

            The painting above was painted in 1968 by Dyer M. Reynolds, who worked in the circus with Emmett Kelly Clown. The art media used to create this painting was oil paints. Oil paint is slow drying making changes and corrections easy, as well as blending accurately with each other to make subtle variations in color and details of light and shadow. I think for some people, like my mom, with fears of clowns, the painting can be off or creepy; however, I think it is beautiful and interesting in the sense it shows the side of sadness to a clown, making them have a different level of depth.

Hey everyone! I am an 18-year-old Latina, and also a dual enrollment student. My family is from Ecuador, but I was born and raised here. I love hanging out with my friends whenever I can, especially going to see the sunsets while eating froyo. I have been a member of the Boys and Girls Club of Sarasota and Desotot Counties for the past 11 years, and currently work at CVS. I think I am unique in the sense that I am very passionate about what I do and set clear goals that I will work hard to accomplish. I also love travelling and visiting new places, in other words I am super adventurous.
