How to write kids, if you don't remember being one or haven't lived with any
1. Kids never feel as small as you see them. A three year old thinks a one year old is a baby and a six year old is grown up. A six year old thinks a three year old is a baby and a twelve year old is an adult. Age is about perspective. One year is a huge age difference to a little kid.
2. Little kids might not be conscious of their physical limitations, but they can still be frustrated by them. A seven year old might see an adult do something relatively simple, like draw a straight line or perfectly crack an egg, and try to do the same thing, only to be frustrated when it doesn't work.
Imagine suddenly having an injury that makes a skill you use every day become difficult- you feel you should be able to do the thing, and you understand the thing should be easy for you, but it isn't. It can be immensely frustrating to have a brain that grasps a concept that language or fine motor skills haven't caught up to.
3. You know when you forget a word, and have to make something up on the fly to describe the word? That's pretty much exactly what learning your first language is like.
You know what you intend, but you don't have a way to express it, and it can move you to tears with frustration when everyone around you is suggesting the wrong thing, or seems completely certain they understand what you mean, and they don't.
You don't have a word for "Later"? You might try saying "next time", or, "after", or, "before tomorrow".
This might result in saying, "Are we going to the park next time?", "Are we going to the park before tomorrow?", or, "Are we going to the park after?", all of which can result in different answers.
4. Kids feel like adults are a different species. They don't get why we do certain things, and they don't understand why we don't want to run around with them all the time.
If sitting still is boring, coffee tastes bitter, and long conversations only happen with weird-smelling strangers who talk to them like they're stupid, then they truly will not understand why anyone would *want* to be left to have coffee with a friend without welcome distractions to make it bearable.
Aren't you bored? You aren't doing anything. How could you possibly be stimulated without any food or toys or music or anything? Why don't you just leave? Do you *have* to be there, the way you had to go to work? Adults are weird.
5. Children have complex social relationships that are just as varied as yours.
A room full of third graders might look like indiscriminate chaos to an adult, but pick a well connected kid, and they'll tell you that Megan is the fashion icon who can do hair really well, Thomas is the athlete, Gray gets mean when he has to share so nobody wants to play with him, Paisley can't read and the boys make fun of her for it so don't make her work in a group with Anthony, Dillon put a bug in their food once so they'll never trust him again, and Matthew's parents let him watch family guy so he says bad words and makes grown-up jokes that make other kids uncomfortable.
You don't see this stuff because you aren't inside the society. They are, and they do.
6. Time. Moves. So. Slow. Five minutes really does feel like half an hour. Sit still for five minutes? That's like you sitting in a waiting room at the DMV for an hour. Wouldn't you get annoyed and impatient? They haven't learned to hide their irritation yet. That's really the only difference.
7. "Reading in your head" requires understanding that you have a Voice, which people can hear, and Thoughts, which are audible only to yourself. This can be a difficult concept to grasp. If a kid is reading out loud, and you tell them to read quietly, there's a good chance they're going to whisper or mouth the words instead of going totally silent the way you might. Splitting the self into multiples like "Internal monologue VS public perception" or "What I look like VS how I think I look" is alien and bizarre. If a kid thinks they look like a Dragon and you laugh at them? Ouch. They might be mad for a while.
8. Repetitive chores make no sense when your awareness of time doesn't extend beyond a week or so. Why should I wash my blankets? They don't look dirty and I don't smell anything bad. Blankets don't get dirty unless you put dirt on them. If you put a blanket in a washer, you can't use that blanket AT ALL the ENTIRE TIME it's being cleaned. That might be an hour, but it will *feel* like a week. And you have to do that every two weeks?? That's overkill. Why even bother?
9. Kids have opinions about adults. They will have a sense about whether an adult is "real-kind" or "fake-kind". An adult who listens respectfully to what they have to say, asks thoughtful questions, and takes their concerns seriously? That's a good adult. An adult that oversimplifies their struggles, ignores their complex social rules, and gives bullshit advice like "just walk away from bullies" and "turn your chores into a fun game"? That's not a trustworthy adult. That's an Adult™. An Adult™ doesn't consider them to be a real human being with thoughts and emotions. An Adult™ sees them as an inferior, amusing pet. And they will actively sabotage An Adult™ like that.
10. Emotions are physical at a young age. Joy might make their body buzz until they can't help but wiggle or jump around. Sadness might be a huge physical pain in their throat and heart. Everything they experience is still relatively.New to.them, so there is very little frame of reference to decide if this is a "big hurt that will last forever and ever and never go away", or a "small hurt, that can be fixed easily and won't matter in five minutes". If someone lies to them about getting a cookie, that very well might be all the betrayal of your best friend sleeping with your husband.
Fortunately, a child probably won't be able to burn all your clothes in the yard without your notice.
This is all so true! So many of these points I can clearly remember living with, and some are still the case today!
Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

Words for Skin Tone | How to Describe Skin Color
We discussed the issues describing People of Color by means of food in Part I of this guide, which brought rise to even more questions, mostly along the lines of “So, if food’s not an option, what can I use?” Well, I was just getting to that!
This final portion focuses on describing skin tone, with photo and passage examples provided throughout. I hope to cover everything from the use of straight-forward description to the more creatively-inclined, keeping in mind the questions we’ve received on this topic.
Standard Description
Basic Colors
Pictured above: Black, Brown, Beige, White, Pink.
“She had brown skin.”
This is a perfectly fine description that, while not providing the most detail, works well and will never become cliché.
Describing characters’ skin as simply brown or beige works on its own, though it’s not particularly telling just from the range in brown alone.
Complex Colors
These are more rarely used words that actually “mean” their color. Some of these have multiple meanings, so you’ll want to look into those to determine what other associations a word might have.
Pictured above: Umber, Sepia, Ochre, Russet, Terra-cotta, Gold, Tawny, Taupe, Khaki, Fawn.
Complex colors work well alone, though often pair well with a basic color in regards to narrowing down shade/tone.
For example: Golden brown, russet brown, tawny beige…
As some of these are on the “rare” side, sliding in a definition of the word within the sentence itself may help readers who are unfamiliar with the term visualize the color without seeking a dictionary.
“He was tall and slim, his skin a russet, reddish-brown.”
Comparisons to familiar colors or visuals are also helpful:
“His skin was an ochre color, much like the mellow-brown light that bathed the forest.”
Modifiers
Modifiers, often adjectives, make partial changes to a word. The following words are descriptors in reference to skin tone.
Dark - Deep - Rich - Cool
Warm - Medium - Tan
Fair - Light - Pale
Rich Black, Dark brown, Warm beige, Pale pink…
If you’re looking to get more specific than “brown,” modifiers narrow down shade further.
Keep in mind that these modifiers are not exactly colors.
As an already brown-skinned person, I get tan from a lot of sun and resultingly become a darker, deeper brown. I turn a pale, more yellow-brown in the winter.
While best used in combination with a color, I suppose words like “tan” “fair” and “light” do work alone; just note that tan is less likely to be taken for “naturally tan” and much more likely a tanned White person.
Calling someone “dark” as description on its own is offensive to some and also ambiguous. (See: Describing Skin as Dark)
Undertones
Undertones are the colors beneath the skin, seeing as skin isn’t just one even color but has more subdued tones within the dominating palette.
pictured above: warm / earth undertones: yellow, golden, copper, olive, bronze, orange, orange-red, coral | cool / jewel undertones: pink, red, blue, blue-red, rose, magenta, sapphire, silver.
Mentioning the undertones within a character’s skin is an even more precise way to denote skin tone.
As shown, there’s a difference between say, brown skin with warm orange-red undertones (Kelly Rowland) and brown skin with cool, jewel undertones (Rutina Wesley).
“A dazzling smile revealed the bronze glow at her cheeks.”
“He always looked as if he’d ran a mile, a constant tinge of pink under his tawny skin.”
Standard Description Passage
“Farah’s skin, always fawn, had burned and freckled under the summer’s sun. Even at the cusp of autumn, an uneven tan clung to her skin like burrs. So unlike the smooth, red-brown ochre of her mother, which the sun had richened to a blessing.”
-From my story “Where Summer Ends” featured in Strange Little Girls
Here the state of skin also gives insight on character.
Note my use of “fawn” in regards to multiple meaning and association. While fawn is a color, it’s also a small, timid deer, which describes this very traumatized character of mine perfectly.
Though I use standard descriptions of skin tone more in my writing, at the same time I’m no stranger to creative descriptions, and do enjoy the occasional artsy detail of a character.
Creative Description
Whether compared to night-cast rivers or day’s first light…I actually enjoy seeing Characters of Colors dressed in artful detail.
I’ve read loads of descriptions in my day of white characters and their “smooth rose-tinged ivory skin”, while the PoC, if there, are reduced to something from a candy bowl or a Starbucks drink, so to actually read of PoC described in lavish detail can be somewhat of a treat.
Still, be mindful when you get creative with your character descriptions. Too many frills can become purple-prose-like, so do what feels right for your writing when and where. Not every character or scene warrants a creative description, either. Especially if they’re not even a secondary character.
Using a combination of color descriptions from standard to creative is probably a better method than straight creative. But again, do what’s good for your tale.
Natural Settings - Sky
Pictured above: Harvest Moon -Twilight, Fall/Autumn Leaves, Clay, Desert/Sahara, Sunlight - Sunrise - Sunset - Afterglow - Dawn- Day- Daybreak, Field - Prairie - Wheat, Mountain/Cliff, Beach/Sand/Straw/Hay.
Now before you run off to compare your heroine’s skin to the harvest moon or a cliff side, think about the associations to your words.
When I think cliff, I think of jagged, perilous, rough. I hear sand and picture grainy, yet smooth. Calm. mellow.
So consider your character and what you see fit to compare them to.
Also consider whose perspective you’re describing them from. Someone describing a person they revere or admire may have a more pleasant, loftier description than someone who can’t stand the person.
“Her face was like the fire-gold glow of dawn, lifting my gaze, drawing me in.”
“She had a sandy complexion, smooth and tawny.”
Even creative descriptions tend to draw help from your standard words.
Flowers
Pictured above: Calla lilies, Western Coneflower, Hazel Fay, Hibiscus, Freesia, Rose
It was a bit difficult to find flowers to my liking that didn’t have a 20 character name or wasn’t called something like “chocolate silk” so these are the finalists.
You’ll definitely want to avoid purple-prose here.
Also be aware of flowers that most might’ve never heard of. Roses are easy, as most know the look and coloring(s) of this plant. But Western coneflowers? Calla lilies? Maybe not so much.
“He entered the cottage in a huff, cheeks a blushing brown like the flowers Nana planted right under my window. Hazel Fay she called them, was it?”
Assorted Plants & Nature
Pictured above: Cattails, Seashell, Driftwood, Pinecone, Acorn, Amber
These ones are kinda odd. Perhaps because I’ve never seen these in comparison to skin tone, With the exception of amber.
At least they’re common enough that most may have an idea what you’re talking about at the mention of “pinecone.“
I suggest reading out your sentences aloud to get a better feel of how it’ll sounds.
"Auburn hair swept past pointed ears, set around a face like an acorn both in shape and shade.”
I pictured some tree-dwelling being or person from a fantasy world in this example, which makes the comparison more appropriate.
I don’t suggest using a comparison just “cuz you can” but actually being thoughtful about what you’re comparing your character to and how it applies to your character and/or setting.
Wood
Pictured above: Mahogany, Walnut, Chestnut, Golden Oak, Ash
Wood can be an iffy description for skin tone. Not only due to several of them having “foody” terminology within their names, but again, associations.
Some people would prefer not to compare/be compared to wood at all, so get opinions, try it aloud, and make sure it’s appropriate to the character if you do use it.
“The old warlock’s skin was a deep shade of mahogany, his stare serious and firm as it held mine.”
Metals
Pictured above: Platinum, Copper, Brass, Gold, Bronze
Copper skin, brass-colored skin, golden skin…
I’ve even heard variations of these used before by comparison to an object of the same properties/coloring, such as penny for copper.
These also work well with modifiers.
“The dress of fine white silks popped against the deep bronze of her skin.”
Gemstones - Minerals
Pictured above: Onyx, Obsidian, Sard, Topaz, Carnelian, Smoky Quartz, Rutile, Pyrite, Citrine, Gypsum
These are trickier to use. As with some complex colors, the writer will have to get us to understand what most of these look like.
If you use these, or any more rare description, consider if it actually “fits” the book or scene.
Even if you’re able to get us to picture what “rutile” looks like, why are you using this description as opposed to something else? Have that answer for yourself.
“His skin reminded her of the topaz ring her father wore at his finger, a gleaming stone of brown, mellow facades.”
Physical Description
Physical character description can be more than skin tone.
Show us hair, eyes, noses, mouth, hands…body posture, body shape, skin texture… though not necessarily all of those nor at once.
Describing features also helps indicate race, especially if your character has some traits common within the race they are, such as afro hair to a Black character.
How comprehensive you decide to get is up to you. I wouldn’t overdo it and get specific to every mole and birthmark. Noting defining characteristics is good, though, like slightly spaced front teeth, curls that stay flopping in their face, hands freckled with sunspots…
General Tips
Indicate Race Early: I suggest indicators of race be made at the earliest convenience within the writing, with more hints threaded throughout here and there.
Get Creative On Your Own: Obviously, I couldn’t cover every proper color or comparison in which has been “approved” to use for your characters’ skin color, so it’s up to you to use discretion when seeking other ways and shades to describe skin tone.
Skin Color May Not Be Enough: Describing skin tone isn’t always enough to indicate someone’s ethnicity. As timeless cases with readers equating brown to “dark white” or something, more indicators of race may be needed.
Describe White characters and PoC Alike: You should describe the race and/or skin tone of your white characters just as you do your Characters of Color. If you don’t, you risk implying that White is the default human being and PoC are the “Other”).
PSA: Don’t use “Colored.” Based on some asks we’ve received using this word, I’d like to say that unless you or your character is a racist grandmama from the 1960s, do not call People of Color “colored” please.
Not Sure Where to Start? You really can’t go wrong using basic colors for your skin descriptions. It’s actually what many people prefer and works best for most writing. Personally, I tend to describe my characters using a combo of basic colors + modifiers, with mentions of undertones at times. I do like to veer into more creative descriptions on occasion.
Want some alternatives to “skin” or “skin color”? Try: Appearance, blend, blush, cast, coloring, complexion, flush, glow, hue, overtone, palette, pigmentation, rinse, shade, sheen, spectrum, tinge, tint, tone, undertone, value, wash.

Summary: You and Henry have a little talk about someone that almost turn into an argument
Part of I Hate That I Love You mini-series: Family Trip | Worried | Going Public
Pairing: Henry Cavill x Female Reader
Note: I hope you guys like it (Proofread & Edited)
“What’s so special about her Henry?! You never announced our relationship on social media.” Miya said on the phone.
Henry rolls his eyes. “I thought you blocked my number, Miya! You call me because of my relationship?”
“YOU LEFT ME FOR HER!” Miya yelled over the phone.
Henry shakes his head sitting in his living room in front of his laptop waiting to join his cast-mates on zoom. He listens to her ramble on how upset she was as he saw you walked out towards the kitchen.
Henry sighs. “Miya!” As soon as he said her name that got your attention real quick. You slowly did what you had to do listened to his conversation while getting what you need from the kitchen.
“Henry How fucking dare you?!” Miya cried.
Quickly Henry hangs up on the phone with her. He didn’t have the time to deal with her bullshit anymore. He doesn’t even know why he continues to take her call, to begin with.
“You still talk to her, huh?” You sat on the edge of the couch eating fruits in a bowl.
Henry almost jumped hearing your face. His eyes locked on you. “Babe, it’s not–”
“No, don’t explain yourself. I don’t know what it is, but I knew she been calling you like crazy this whole week.” You weren’t trying to hear what he had to say.
“If you want closure to go right ahead, but remember an ex will always try to keep you apart from anybody you with.” You spoke the truth he probably wasn’t ready to hear.
“Don’t forget I’m gone for a week, so go ahead and do what you want to get that feeling or confession off your chest.” You walked off trying to cry.
“Y/N!” He called out to you.
Henry leaned back against the couch thinking what the fuck until he heard a voice from the screen on his laptop.
“Henry hey!”
He quickly got himself together and join his cast-mates from the Witcher on the screen and his team.
“Hey, you guys.” Henry smiles seeing everyone on the screen.
“Finally, you said something about you and y/n.” Kimberly’s voice came out excitedly.
Anya rolls her eyes. “You guys we are here to talk about season two not Henry’s stupid relationship.”
Everyone gasped but end up laughing. Anya was known to make jokes and have people smiling.
“Did you guys get the script?” Henry asked everyone.
“Yeah, season two going to be fun and something new to learn,” Joey said.
Being on zoom with his cast-mates Henry shares some stories and laughed. He had a fun time talking to his cast-mates. After being on zoom for almost two hours he shit his laptop down and went to go check on you.
“Y/N honey.” He tried to get your attention.
You were busy getting your clothes together to find out what you wanted to take with you. You weren’t sure if you should pack enough or very little.
“Y/N.” He call your name again.
You ignored him still trying to figure out what to pack.
“Y/N!” Henry snatched your clothes out your hand finally getting your attention.
Y/N turns to look at him like he was out of his mind. She tried to grab her shirt back, but he kept it behind his back. “Henry!”
“Baby don’t act like this!” He stood there still looking at her.
“Act like what exactly?” You crossed your arms over your chest. “I’m fine.”
“That’s bullshit babe.” Henry could see right through you.
“Miya really? Really?” You scoffed.
“It’s not–” You cut him off.
“No, it’s ok to talk to her do what the fuck you want Henry! Because obviously, you do have a clue why you keep in contact with her.” You took your shirt back from him then continue to pack. “Don’t worry, I’ll be out of your way tomorrow.”
“Y/N I–” You cut him off one more time.
“Do what you want Henry.” You continue to finish packing while ignoring him.
Henry opens his mouth to speak until his phone rang. He looked at you before he answered his phone and walked out the door.
You heard the door close shut when you stopped packing and stood there feeling a tear roll down your cheeks.

I swear I proofread this
Ivar rolled his eyes, before glaring at his phone screen.
“Why are you getting upset?” Ubbe asks his brother.
“Because y/n keeps liking this assholes pictures.” Ivar replies glaring at his brother.
“But you’re dating, so what’s it matter?” Ubbe asks.
“It matters.” Ivar starts “Look it just does y/n is mine and-“ Ivar stopped mid sentence before holding his phone closer to his face. Ubbe raises an eyebrow sitting up straighter on the couch.
“Un-fucking believeable.” Ivar mumbled to himself.
“Y/N!” He yelled.
“What!” You yelled back from the bedroom you were in the middle of a show and things were starting to get juicy.
“Come here!” He yelled back.
“Jesus! What Ivar?” You huffed entering the living room clearly annoyed.
“Why did he add you Instagram?” Ivar asks holding up his phone, which was on your followers.
“Because I’m amazing- look I don’t know I like his pictures and he added me it’s not like we’re planning on running off to get married.” You stated hands on your hips.
“Do you like him?” Ivar asked sitting up.
“As of right now yes, because he isn’t interrupting me from watching my shows.” You replied arms now folded across your chest. Ubbe placed a hand over his mouth trying to hide the large smile on his face. Ivar glared at his brother before turning his attention back to you.
“Unfriend him.” Ivar demanded as he stared you down.
“No.” You replied before turning on your heel and going back to the bedroom to finish your shows.
“Fine! You’re cut off.” Ivar threatened.
“Cut off from what? Sex? Please I can go without sex longer than you.” You’ll be begging to even see my pussy.” You countered.
“Yeah right you’ll be crying to see my dick by bedtime.” Ivar countered. Ubbe’s laughter filled the silence that had settled between you and Ivar. You rolled your eyes before shutting the bedroom door behind you.
“I think you’re going to be in a world of trouble.” Ubbe said wiping the tears from his eyes. Ivar just scoffed leaning back into the couch trying to focus on the television.
-THREE WEEKS LATER-
“I am telling you girl he’s been trying to seduce me for the last four days now.” You said into in the phone.
Ivar made his way into the kitchen hair pulled back into a ponytail.
“Girl, I’ll call you back later.” You said before hanging up the phone.
“Morning, breakfast is in the oven.” You said glancing at your boyfriend.
“You already ate?” He asked rubbing the last of sleep from his eyes.
“Of course not, I was waiting on you.” You replied picking up your phone to finish scrolling through your work emails. Ivar nodded going to the stove to get the breakfast you’d made.
“How long do you plan on resisting me?” Ivar asked picking up a strip of bacon.
“I don’t know what you mean.” You replied flashing him a coy smile.
“You won’t let me touch you, I know your pussy is weeping for me.” Ivar said his gaze drifting down to your cleavage, you had purposely wore a low cut pajama top, and matching shorts.
“You know nothing Lothbrok.” You replied. “And I do let you touch me, we’ve been kissing, holding hands, cuddling in bed and when we’re watching tv.” You rambled on.
“I want more than that.” Ivar half shouted obviously frustrated with your feigned innocence.
“You’re the one who cut me off remember?” You stated. “I know that but that, but that doesn’t mean you should’ve listened.” “The one time you actually listen to me and it’s about that.” Ivar continued.
“This all started because of you freaking out about someone following me back on Instagram.” You replied.
“It’s not just someone it’s your celebrity crush.” Ivar said growing angry again.
“Just ask him to add you too.” You said grabbing your dishes to wash.
“He blocked me.” Ivar mumbled cheeks tinted with a light shade of pink, his gaze anywhere but you.
“What?” You asked laughing a little. “He blocked you? Why?” You asked between giggles.
“Because he’s jealous.” Ivar replied now annoyed.
“Or...it could be with your not so subtle spamming.” You say holding your phone up now on Ivar’s page. “What are these poses, and those outfits?” He probably thought you were imitating him.” You continue looking at your boyfriend who was know glaring daggers at you.
“Aw babe.” You coo approaching Ivar as he continued you stare you down, his gaze softening ever so slightly as you looped your arms around his neck. Ivar relaxes into your touch his hands finding their way to your waist pulling you closer.
“I love you.” You say before kissing him. You can feel Ivar smile against your lips.
“ I know, my love.” He mumbles against your lips one hand moving between your legs his smile growing as he felt the damp spot in your panties.
“So you have been crying for me?”Ivar asks a cocky grin on his face. “Of course I have, now let’s go to the bedroom so I can really weep for you.” You say before kissing Ivar again. Ivar smiles following close behind you.

HOME
“Geralt!” The bard calls approaching his friend a large smile on his face.
“Good to see you.” Geralt says as he continues to brush Roach’s mane. “Travels been good?” He asks looking at his friend.
“Well the people have been fighting over me, and I have to give the people what they want.” Jaskier replies a confident smile on his face.
“They must be all tone deaf.” Geralt replies a playful grin on his lips as he takes a step away from Roach inspecting his work.
“Keep it up and you won’t get the surprise I’ve gotten you.” The bard threatens.
“Your last surprise had almost gotten my face melted and Roach eaten, now what is it?” Geralt asks eyeing the bard. Jaskier only smiles digging into his bag.
“Well I may have stopped in this quaint little village and-“ Geralt held up his hand stopping Jaskier mid sentence, the moment Jaskier opened his bag he caught the scent, that oh so familiar scent of roses, chamomile and a bit of lavender.
“I don’t need you playing match maker.” Geralt grumbles.
“She misses you and is worried and she thought you were dead you should’ve seen the look on her face when I told her I was coming to see you.” Jaskier explained frowning a bit. Geralt didn’t want to think of your face...how upset you must’ve looked, heartbroken and betrayed.
“I did try to smooth things over, I told her I also thought you died as well until Vesmir reached out to me and set up this little meet up here.” Jaskier continued.
“Why did you have to go and see her?” Geralt asked ignoring his friends explanation.
“Because she’s my friend and I worry about her and the fact she fell in love with an emotionally incompetent man who doesn’t enjoy my singing.” Jaskier replied. “Look just read the letter and write her back and maybe be clear about your intentions.” Jaskier says finally pulling out the letter. Geralt stares at it for a beat before finally taking it from the bard.
“Well now that, that’s settled onward to our next mission.” Jaskier said with newfound energy.
It’s late when the two find a tavern for the night it’ll be another day or two depending on the weather before they reach their destination. Geralt sits on the bed staring at the unopened letter he brings it to his nose enjoying your faint scent still on it,finally he opens it.
My lov Geralt I’ve gone through this in my head dozens of time...I hope this finds you well. I miss you . I thought you were dead. I’m hurt, angry and so confused. I hope that- I hope that you find whatever it is that you’re looking for and I wish you could’ve found happiness with me.
Geralt stares at the letter for a long time, he reads it several times. He loved you, loved you more than he thought more than he should have. He knew it was wrong to just leave the way he did...in the middle of the night while you slept a gentle kiss to the forehead and quick note about a monster and he’ll return soon. But he knew he wouldn’t and it hurt him. Geralt sighs he thinks about replying, would you even read it what would he say.
That he was afraid of falling in love again, that it scared him, that he almost almost turned around to be home with you and live a simple life waking up every morning to someone who loved and adored him, no ulterior motives just someone who just wanted him nothing more nothing less. The maiden and the mutant? No it was foolish dream no matter how much he wanted it he couldn’t. You deserved better someone who would be stable and consistent. Someone who could give you a family if that was what you truly desired.
Geralt sighed he needed to meditate after this he would see you...hopefully and give you some sort explanation. Sleep does not come to the Witcher no matter how hard he tries to clear his mind, and soon he finds himself writing to you.
You weren’t expecting to hear from Geralt, okay that was lie you were hoping to hear something after running into Jaskier that was until this morning you had received a reply from the man that you had so foolishly fallen for. You eagerly opened the letter.
Dove...I’m not sure if I’m even allowed to call you that. I owe you an explanation and I know- fuck I know that I’ve hurt you. I- I’m weak and I’m wanting-all I’ve ever known is how to be a Witcher and the responsibilities that come with-but I met you and now there’s- fuck this is hard I’m sorry and I just- this is hard to explain.
You read and re-read the letter over and over again. Everyday for two almost three weeks you read over and over again before you go to bed and when you wake in the morning. And just like every morning you’d finished breakfast and went to hangout your laundry. You enjoyed the summer it was your favorite season and you were glad this particular morning it was windy your clothes would dry in no time with the heat and wind combined. After that you spent the afternoon baking trying to distract yourself from thoughts Geralt.
Geralt could see your home it was so close. Was it too late to turn back? He could smell the bread you were baking, he could also see your laundry hanging out to dry. No it was now or never he’d already ran once from you and his feelings he wouldn’t do it again. Dismounting from Roach he approached your home entering by the small yard and garden area. He could hear you singing that gods awful song Jaskier wrote about tossing a coin to a Witcher though it did sound better coming from you. It made the song slightly more tolerable.
He steeled himself as he began to step around the drying clothes. Rounding the corner you walked right into to him. Geralt let out a soft grunt. He could hear your heart pounding in your chest, dark doe like eyes gazed up at him.
“Fuck.” Geralt mumbled
“Geralt? I-you” you stuttered looking at him. Geralt stood straighter motioning to your home. You nodded leading him inside. Honeyed colored eyes took in every detail nothing had changed except more flowers and other plants, still warm, still safe. His gaze finally lands on you. Just as beautiful the day he first met you, deep brown eyes, full lips...his eyes lingered on your lips.
Then it comes Geralt feels the sting he knows it’ll leave a nice red mark on his cheek. You hold your hand glaring at him and yet despite your anger your eyes are glossy tears ready to spill any second. Then you approach him and in seconds your chest to chest, your fists pound against his frame, not enough to hurt him but he lets you vent finally you stop your forehead on his chest and she stays there holding you as your shoulders shake as you sob.
He doesn’t say anything...what could he possibly say. He continues to hold you, his own vision becoming blurry he blinks back his own tears. He doesn’t have a right to be sad he’s the one that caused this in the first place. Finally you’ve calmed Geralt still holds you though he doesn’t want to let you go again.
“You came back.” You finally say.
“I did....it was the easiest and hardest thing I had to do.” He replies.
“What?” You asked confused.
“I- I didn’t want to come back, I was scared that you’d found someone else....someone who wouldn’t put you through what I did, if you had someone else who could make you happy..a happiness you deserve.” Geralt says his golden eyes locked on you. “But I’m glad I did.” He pauses after a moment trying to convey his feelings as best as he can.
“I love you dove, I’m old, I’m selfish, and I really really fucking love you.” He finally says, before you can speak, before you can process what he says his lips are on yours his hands cradling your face. He finally pulls away and you’re both gasping for air.
He presses his forehead against yours.
“Are you leaving again?” You ask you almost regret it but you have to know.
“I will always be a Witcher but you are my home and we still need an extra income after all, Witcher’s do work up an appetite.” He answers with a soft smile. You let out a soft chuckle, it’s music to his ears.
“And when a job lasts longer than intended I will write I promise.” He continues as he continues to hold you close. He can feel you nod, he smiles again closing his eyes enjoying you.
