There was something about his smile that had caught her off guard. There was no denying that Lucas was handsome and even someone as inexperienced in the romance department like her was not immune to his charms. But there was nothing superficial or shallow about the strange butterflies she felt when he smiled at her. And because she had let her guard down, she fell for him. Literally. “Eep!” A high squeal was forced from her lips out of the shock of falling so suddenly. If she had been paying attention, she would have seen the signs of him close to falling and done something to prevent it. But Hana did something that was so rare for her on the ice, she fell hard.
But instead of the impact of the solid ice like she had been expecting, Hana hit something softer and much more warm. “Lucas! Are YOU ok?” In the fall she had ended up crashing into his chest. Practically falling back as she got off from him, her own hands brushed against his head to check for any injuries. “No this is my fault. I should have been more careful.” Once again she began to rant in Japanese, but this time it was to chastise herself. “Stupid Hana!”
All he could register was her question before Hana started speaking in Japanese and then all Lucas could focus was on her face, how she seemed so worried about him. Sure, he was her student and it was her duty to keep him as safe as possible, but he could see that Hana was someone who took things beyond professional matters. She cared about him – and Lucas had to remind himself that it would be the same with anyone else there, he wasn’t special.
“’m fine, don’t worry,” he smiled at her and raised a hand on a thumbs up to keep her calm. But instead of getting up Lucas kept there, lying on the ice. He did grow up in very cold places, after all. “No need ta worry, I didn’t break anything, falling is part of my profession too.” He had played in the snow before, and although it wasn’t this hard it still was worse, falling and feeling the snow soaking through his uniform. “Yer fine, right? Yer didn’t hit the ice?” Lucas asked, sitting down and looking at Hana. He moved forward, tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear. “Falling and getting up is part of this.” He smiled at her. “Now how about we get up and you let me pay yer a coffee?” Lucas offered. “Fer being a clumsy student.”

Day drinking is a rare luxury. But then again combo it with sports and it’s pretty much acceptable anywhere.
‘m not supposed ta be night drinkin’, but it is not a soccer game if ‘m not drinking, keeps me calm.
natexromero:
Bottoms up, man. Never a bad time for some day drinking.
Now yer saying th’ truth, it’s always a good time for some beer. Jus’ missing a good Guinness ‘ere.
Drinking middle day an’ watchin’ yer country play soccer is a recipe for disaster, lemme tell yer. At least we didn’t lose.

Never had anyone put doubt in such a new perspective. People often had said that they understood what she was going through, but Lucas actually did. For once in her life, Hana didn’t feel as bad for her doubt or wallow more in it. He made such a good point. “Maybe I will perform…”
“Trying shows great promise.” Trying showed her that he had a drive and that he was putting effort into the things she was teaching. In reality he didn’t even have to. “You are?” Hearing that he was experiencing the same type of calm and joy that she felt whenever she skated was the greatest compliment. There he went again with the sweet talk, her ever present blush was now a soft pink from her adjusting to his smooth talking ways. “I really am glad to hear that you’re happy.” Squeezing his hands again as he attempted a stop, she was beaming with encouragement. “If you’re ever feeling down, please come and find me. I mean it.” Being a new person in a new place was hard, and Hana wanted to help anyone who was feeling what she had.
“Whatever yer do, jus’ remember ta not pressure yerself too much, right?” He could say a thing or two about that subject, but they had just met and Lucas didn’t want to sound like he was pressuring her into doing something she didn’t want to. Maybe in the future they could sit together and talk about the high demands on every person who practiced some sport, but for now he was happy Hana was at least considering it.
That was new to Lucas, a woman who didn’t want anything from him. He could see that she meant it with the best intentions in the world, not anything else. Usually women would suggest all sort of things to take his mind off his problems, but in the end they all wanted something from him, whether it was fast money or a commitment, they always expected something. Not Hana. “Don’t worry love, I come see you,” and he meant it too. Because now Lucas felt like he couldn’t wait for the next time they met. He smiled at Hana, hands squeezing hers back as he tried to stop again. Except this time his feet didn’t help, distracted as he was with her face and her, Lucas felt himself falling down again, this time pulling Hana with him. His back and head hit the ice and he closed his eyes. “Shite!” The Brit yelled. “Yer alright there Hana? ‘m so sorry!” He touched her arms to check on her. “Shite skater I am.”

“Feeling like what?” She had been stuck in her own head and self pity that Hana did not realize that her melancholy was noticeable. When she looked into his eyes and saw the smile he had for her, she knew that he wasn’t pitying her or faking his concern. There was an understanding that she felt that he had. And for once it was just nice to know someone got her. “I-I’m not sure… I’ve just always been like this.” So insecure and unconfident. She had never really admitted it until now.
“Right.” Once again with ease she moved herself so that she was skating backwards in front of him. This time she ventured to hold both of his hands, for his own safety of course. “This might take a few tries but it will be ok. This stop is called the Snowplough Stop.” As she spoke she directed how to slowly stop by shifting one of his feet sideways to have one of his blades drag on the ice to show him down. “Can’t let my best student get injured while learning how to stop.”
“It’s okay ta doubt yerself from time to time, everyone has these days.” Lucas knew bad moments were part of an athlete’s life; he had moments of doubt and wondering if he should keeping playing or not, but his passion made him keep going, and so should Hana. “But trust yerself and yer talent, I’m sure yer students would want ta share th’ ice with ya.” And Lucas sure would like to watch her perform.
He watched her and paid attention to her instructions. Holding to her hands Lucas tried to stop, sliding a little bit and almost falling before he did it. It was awkward and not too bad, but at least he was still standing. “Don’t know about being th’ best student, but I’m trying,” Lucas was focused on training his stopping technique, afraid of falling and pulling Hana down with him. “Yer know, this is sort of therapeutical, ‘m feeling way happier today than I was a few days ago.” And that was the truth, Lucas had been miserable when he arrived in Belhaven. “But tha’ can be th’ teacher too.” He added, winking at her.

“Are all soccer players smooth talkers, or is it just you?” There was no doubt in Hana’s mind that Lucas Ashworth was a popular one with the ladies. Why was it so hard for her to take a compliment? She would rather deflect from the conversation than actually accept the fact that a conventionally attractive male said a nice thing about her appearance.
“I’m… conflicted on whether I should do the show.” She had been in a constant battle with herself over if she should perform again, even if it was in front of a small local audience. The size of the crowd wasn’t the problem in her mind. It was the fact that it would be in front of her students and people she was starting to open up to. What if it wasn’t good enough for them? It was a lot of pressure on the poor girl. “You’re making me sound much more fancy than I am.” There was something about his eyes that just made her knees feel weak, something a seasoned skater like her should have worried about but as they skated hand in hand she found herself ok with the strange feeling.
Her question made him laugh; throwing his head back before answering the player took his time. “It comes with th’ profession, lass, but if ‘m being honest ‘m sorta of a smooth talker too.” Thinking about it Lucas couldn’t recall a single player who wasn’t that, a player. When you get too much money so soon in your life it changes who you are. “Like I told yer before, I only say things when they’re truth, I swear.”
Focused as he was on not tripping or falling Lucas didn’t want to lose focus, but he could look at her quickly, and he could see and hear the sadness coming from her. It was clear that it was a touchy subject for her and the least thing Lucas wanted to do was to make her feel uncomfortable. “Do yer mind me asking why yer feeling like tha’?” He squeezed her hand as if to reassure her, offering Hana a smile. “Ice skating is pretty fancy to me, and my mates would think so too.” Or they would probably think he was going crazy by picking such a risky thing to do. “I think now would be a good time ta teach me how to stop, yer know, I can’t risk an injury.”

A pie. I kept hearing how people makes pies for the holidays and I wanted to try one.
What type of pie? Not tha’ I’ll turn it down, just curious.

There he went again, with the compliment that made her all bashful inside. “You probably say that to all the girls.” And would have probably been true. A handsome professional athlete would have been surrounded by models and powerful women every day. She was nothing special compared to any of them.
“Or you could be the first dual professional soccer player/ice skater.” Anything was possible nowadays as their back and forth banter became more and more playful. Holding his hand and focusing on his foot work, Hana was impressed at how well he was doing. “Once it gets closer to the holidays I expect more lessons to be requested, and possibly a little show for my students but for now I’m fine with personal vip classes for the stars.”
Well, Hana was right, Lucas did say that to all the girls. It was known that athletes in general were promiscuous, but soccer players were the worst of all. While many of his friends had girlfriends and wives who they chose to cheat on every time they went out – and they knew, of course they knew – Lucas would rather choose the single life. “Yer right,” he admitted. “But I mean it every time I say it, ‘his one included. Yer do have a beautiful smile, Hana.”
Lucas chuckled at her words, nodding. “Who knows, tha’ wouldn’t be so bad.” He enjoyed the playfulness of their talk and how at ease he felt next to Hana. Somehow they clicked very fast, but Lucas was not going to complain about it. “Are yer going ta be on th’ show? I would love ta watch yer perform.” He kept his eyes on the ice, not wanting to fall again and drag Hana with him. Lucas felt like he was doing fairly good, but could never be too careful about it. “Now I can brag ta all my friends back at home tha’ I have my own ice skating coach. Not bad,” he dared to take a look at her. “An’ a pretty one at tha’. What a look lad I am.”
iceprincesshana:
Oh my gosh no. I was just worried about giving you a cavity. I didn’t even think about food poisoning! What if I give you food poisoning?!
Yer not, don’t worry. And what kind of sweet are yer doing ta give me a cavity with just one try?
xminnienotmouse:
Sooooo, go ahead and guess who gets to put another candle in her cake tonight? 😏
Happy birthday, love. Let’s have a drink someday, on me.
iceprincesshana:
Really? You’d be doing me such a huge favor Lucas. I’m not good at judging my own work. Hopefully it’s not awful.
Really. I doubt yer are so bad at it anyway, and I trust yer ta not give me food poisoning.
darklvshes:
Welp, I don’t think showing up drunk to training is like… allowed? It’s not very professional. I mean, I don’t play sports professionally so it’s just an assumption.
It’s not, and it’s not a good idea because trying to run or kick a ball while drunk leads to accidents.
iceprincesshana:
So I just started watching baking videos on youtube and I need someone to be my taste tester. Anyone up for the task? I promise not to poison you.
It’s only fair if I trust yer after yer gave me a vip class, right?

“I-I… Then I’ll make sure to smile more often for you.” The sentiment was so sweet in her eyes. Any other man would have taken advantage of her kindness, that was what she was told, but Lucas was being a complete definition of an English gentleman. Though of his attention on her had left a permanent blush flushed across her face.
“It’s incentive to keep upright.” She joked as she helped him pace his pushes one by one. “Learning how to stop would be helpful.” Braking while in movement could be trickier since she had seen people take nasty spills if they were not careful. “The process goes walking, falling, stoping… then it’s crazy loops. You’re halfway there.” If anyone back home had heard her make a joke while she was on the ice, they would not have believed that she was the real Hana Kojima. But as she stood before him, for the first time in her life she felt so comfortable and free to joke around.
Hana had said smile more often, which meant they could see each other again. Lucas sure hoped so, he still hadn’t made friends in the city – he didn’t even try to – and she looked like someone fun to be around. She had some sort of innocence Lucas had never seen on anyone, or at least not anyone over the age of fifteen. Maybe he was raised in an atmosphere too crooked for people like this to exist, but still. “Good, yer have a beautiful smile.” And that she did.
He heard her answer and nodded. Learning how to stop was important, he could see how anyone could twist an ankle trying to stop the skates. “I’ll be a pro and change my profession in no time,” Lucas joked back. He attempted longer strides, holding Hana’s hand gently. Now he didn’t want to do anything stupid and cause both of them to fall. Sure, she was probably used to being pulled down by students, but not by ones that were heavier than her. “I’m surprised there isn’t more people ‘ere, tha’s seem ta be th’ type of things girls would be into.” Lucas mused. “At least it means I got a vip class.”
