How To: Natural Makeup In 8 Easy Steps
Your Ultimate Hair Brush Guide
To get perfect hair, you need the perfect brush! Here's a handy guide to the most common types of brushes on the market, plus when to use each one.
-Synthetic Bristle Brush
Usually made from nylon, synthetic bristles are best for super thick hairtypes. They donât create as much static as natural versions, like boar. Plus the stiffer bristles make for easier detangling.
-Natural Bristle Brush
Usually made of boar bristles, these brushes are super soft and help to distribute your hair's natural oils all the way to the ends, which makes for some seriously shiny strands! 100% boar bristle brushes can be pretty pricey, but the healthy hair benefits make them worth saving up for. Though anyone can use a natural bristle brush, girls with fine, straight hair or relaxed locks will especially fall in love, since they're gentle on delicate strands!
-Mixed Bristle Brush
To get the perfect combo of a boar bristleâs shiny hair benefits plus a syntheticâs detangling powers, go for a mixed bristle brush! These are the most popular type for hair stylists, since they're so good at doing everything and work well on everyone's hair.
-Paddle Brush
This is your basic go-to for an everyday brush, but it also makes for an awesome blow out. It doesnât create a ton of volume, but helps flatten out frizz for tons of shine.
-Vented Brush
The vents in these types of brushes help speed up your drying time, since the heat from your blow dryer can reach your strands from all angles. Since you're spending less time blasting your hair with hot air, this also helps prevent heat damage! Pro Tip: Always make sure to dry your hair to 80% (so it looks dry but feels wet) before you pick up a brush, since wet hair is more prone to breakage.
-Round Brush
If you want a blowout with major volume and a little bit of curl, use a round brush! They come in tons of different sizesâthe smaller the brush, the tighter the curl. Try blasting the section of hair with cold air before you take out the brush, since this will help set the style.
-Teasing Brush
This brush is forâyou guessed itâteasing! Purposely creating those little knots in your hair when you want extra volume in your updos isnât great for your locks, but a proper teasing brush with boar bristles is less harsh than a comb, which can break fragile hair.
-Rattail Comb
The long handle on this type of comb makes sectioning hair to create cool braids or a flawless curl set a total breeze! Plus, the fine teeth of the comb are great for smoothing out any cowlicks and bumps in your style.
-Wide Tooth Comb
When your hair is sopping wet from the shower, the last thing you want to do is go at it with your usual hairbrush. The bristles will pull and stretch out your strands, making them weak and easily broken! Instead, go for a wide tooth combâit detangles knots without tearing at your hair.
-Wet Brush
If you don't love the way a comb tugs at your scalp, you can use a brush on wet hairâas long as it's specifically designed for soaked strands. This one has bristles almost as stiff as a comb, so it won't pull as much as a traditional paddle brush.
The Best Bronzer For You
Didnât head somewhere tropical for spring break this year? You can still fake that warm-weather glow with bronzer. Find your perfect shade!
-Fair
With your super light complexion, you want to be wary of dark bronzers that could give you that oompa loompa orange-y look. Instead of a single solid shade bronzer, pick a mosaic palette that contains mostly lighter tan and pink-ish colors for the perfect, natural-looking glow.Â
Try:Â NYC New York Color Sun N Bronze Bronzing Powder in Hampton Radiance, $4.47
-Beige
Your skin gets pretty pale in the winter, but you tend to tan pretty quickly once the sun comes out. Pick a palette with a bunch of different shades of brown, peach, pink, and tan that you can layer on to play up your bronze-y complexion all summer long!
Try:Â NYX Radiant Finishing Powder in Sunkissed, $9
-Golden
Give your naturally-glowy skin extra radiance with a shimmery, gold-flecked bronzer, which can feel too glittery on lighter skintones, but looks amazing with your warm undertones.
Try:Â Physicianâs Formula Bronze Booster Glow-Boosting BB Bronzer, $14.95
-Olive
The trick to finding a bronzer that wonât make your olive complexion look ashy or sallow is to look for one that matches your neutral undertones. Go for a medium shade that is the perfect combo of cool brown and warm, golden hues!
Try:Â Covergirl Queen Collection Natural Hue Bronzer, $6.99
-Bronze
You already have a natural bronze-y color that makes all your friends jeal. Use a deep, matte bronzer under your cheekbones for a Jenner-worthy contouring effect!
Try:Â Sugar Tropic Tan Face & Body Bronzer, $20
-Deep
You might not normally think to use bronzer, but the right shade can actually have a gorgeous highlighting effect on darker complexions! This one has the perfect amount of sparkle to give you a natural-looking glow, without looking glittery.
Try:Â Black Radiance Artisan Color Baked Bronzer in Rum Spice, $4.99
10 reasons you might not have scored that internship
Find out first-hand the interview mistakes that could cost you that dream internshipâand what employers are really looking for.Â
1. You don't have a good answer to the question, "Where do you see yourself in ten years?"
I don't deny this is a clichĂ© thing to ask â the Ritz cracker of job interview questions â but it can greatly influence my opinion of a person. For instance, if you're interviewing for a job in social media and you say you want to be a creative director, I'm going to wonder why you're not interviewing for a design job. If you interview for an assistant job and say you want to be interviewing Justin Bieber on the carpet in ten years because "OMG I love him so much he's so cute," I'm going to have a hard time taking you seriously. There are ways to intellectually discuss an interest in Justin Bieber, don't get me wrong, but if you seem to be using the organization as a means of gaining proximity to celebs, you can turn right around and find somewhere else to work. Perks should be just that: perks! Not the sole reason for pursuing a given career path.
2. You didn't Google me before you showed up.
Not everyone is going to have a huge presence on the internet, but if you're interviewing with a person who DOES, you should have figured that out before you showed up and, once you're in front of them, say things that suggest you've taken five seconds to Google them and read their five most recent tweets or the latest press release about their work. I am so impressed when I meet people who mention details about my career or Twitter feed or something else they found out by doing a quick Internet search because so few people come that prepared.
3. We're just not a good fit for each other.
There is nothing you can do about this, but it's good to realize that if you didn't get a job, it's not necessarily because you lack talent, passion, or a future in the field you're pursuing. Some managers want employees who don't ask any questions, some managers want employees who ask questions all the time. And sometimes, I can just tell that my management style isn't going to bring out the best in someone. Sometimes I pass on people who seem amazing but possess similar skill sets and expertise as several other people on my team and I just have to go with a person who has a different point of view. The good news is, I remember all the talented people I interview and try to recommend them to my friends who might have a better opportunity for you.
4. You seem entitled.
If you come into my office with an attitude that suggests you're going to have a problem with menial tasks, I'm going to hire the person I just saw who told me, "I'm happy to do grunt work, I am just dying to work here." No one enjoys doing menial jobs, but everyone has to do them at some point. The person interviewing you probably rolled up their sleeves when they were starting out and made copies and restaurant reservations and booked airline tickets. The truth is, if you're not willing to do that stuff cheerfully, a lot of other people are.
5. You didn't follow up.
I don't care if you email me to say thank you or send me a hand-painted card in the mail, but I do look for a thank-you note because it shows you want the job. If you don't follow up, I assume you don't care and don't really want it.
6. You're overqualified.
If you've been working for two years out of school and have been doing work that's a lot more advanced and interesting than what I need from an entry-level opening, I'm not going to hire you. You'll be bored! Managers usually want everyone they hire to feel challenged â like they're always taking steps forward and always growing. And if a manager doesn't want that for you, they might not be such a great person to work for.
7. You didn't over-prepare.
Bringing several hard copies of your resumé is the bare minimum. If you want to be a writer, you should also bring a folder of your published work that your interviewer can keep. If you're applying for a graphic design job, bring a portfolio of your relevant artwork. Write three references down on a separate page with phone numbers and email addresses and leave that with your interviewer, too. Most people under-prepare, but even if you just do standard preparation (like, print three resumés) there's a good chance someone will come in with a packet that blows my mind and make you seem less impressive.
8. You didn't properly study the company you're interviewing with before you showed up.Â
You should Google whoever you're going to interview with the morning of your interview. You want to be totally up to speed with whatever they're doing that day, not just what they did yesterday. Also, if you have a week to prepare for an interview, use it! That way you can reference things the company did last week that caught your eye, which shows you've really been keeping tabs on all company activities.
9. You're nervous in a bad way.
Nerves are actually fine â when I can tell someone's really nervous about meeting with me, I know they care about making a stellar impression and want the job, which is something I really look for. But if you're so nervous that you're forgetting key talking points or flubbing answers to more than two questions, your nerves are unfortunately working against you. Here's some advice I once got that made me a whole lot less nervous about interviewing for things myself: the interviewer wants you to be The One. Hiring is tedious, incredibly challenging, and time-consuming. I desperately want every young whippersnapper who walks through my door to be The One. So if you feel your nerves getting the best of you, remember: the interviewer is on your side!
10. You didn't have good questions to ask at the end of your interview.
Asking someone "what's the best part about working here?" and nothing else suggests that you're just asking questions for the sake of asking the question. If you've got face time with an influencer in whatever field you're pursuing, use it! Ask them what they think of their competitors, ask them what they want to improve in the work they're already doing, ask them where they think some facet of their industry is going. And if you have legitimate concerns about why you might not be the best fit for a position, ask about that, too. Remember that this is your chance to interview someone who could be your boss so use the time to find out as much about what the job is going to be like day-to-day as you can.
5 Easy "No-Workout" Workouts
Getting in shape doesnât have to be a major chore. Sneak these easy-get-fit ideas (courtesy of Gold's Gym) into your life, and you wonât even notice youâre doing anythingâuntil you start to see the payoff!
1. Tooth Brush Wall Squats
Instead of standing over the sink while youâre brushing your teeth, stand against a wall with your legs extended out about two feet from the wall. Slowly bend your knees to slide down the wall until you reach a seated position.
Extra How-To Details:Â Start out holding the squat position for 30 seconds (working your way up to a minute). Then, stand up, take a quick break and repeat until youâre done brushing your teeth (two to three minutes in total).
How Often Should You Do It:Â Do it every time you brush your teethâso at least twice a day!
The Payoff:Â This is the best way to tone your butt and your legs in a short amount of time.
Just Remember:Â Make sure your back is flat against the wall and your knees are positioned behind your toes!Â
2. Commercial Break Mini-Workout
Next time the ads start during Glee, instead of fast-forwarding the DVR, get off the couch and try a Star Pass. Start in a standing position with your arms over your head, holding the remote control in between both hands. Bend to your right, lifting your left leg off the ground so that your body looks like a star. Then repeat to the left.
Extra How-To Details:Â Hold the position on each side for three to five seconds and keep switching back and forth until the commercial break ends!
How Often Should You Do It:Â Try doing it during at least half of the commercials that come on during every hour-long TV show you watch!
The Payoff:Â This is a total body workout and great for toning up your legs and abs!
Just Remember:Â Keep your core tight the whole time youâre moving from side to side, to work your abs as much as possible!
3. Load up Your Bag
You need a ton of stuff at school anyway, so increase the weight in your bag by adding some extra books or super-light weights.
How Often Should You Do It:Â This works for weekdays. Try doing it on every school day.
The Payoff:Â The extra weight will increase the workout (and the calories you burn) whenever youâre walking around.
Just Remember:Â Donât make your bag so heavy that itâs going to cause a strain on your back. Also, if you carry your bag on one shoulder, make sure to alternate sides frequently so that all the weight is not being put on one side.
4. Super-Sneaky Ab Workout
When youâre in class (or at a movie or even a football game), and not taking notes, work on your abs. Sit up straight and squeeze your abs tight. Nobody will even know youâre doing it!
Extra How-To Details:Â Start off by holding the contraction for 30 seconds. Thatâs one set. Now repeat four times, with a minute between sets. As you get stronger, increase the number of sets you do during one class.
How Often Should You Do It:Â Three times a week.
The Payoff:Â Get a little bit closer to that dream six-pack. Plus, the stronger your abs are, they better your posture isâwhich means you look taller and your butt looks a little bit perkier, even when youâre just standing around.
Just Remember:Â You want to squeeze hard, but donât overdo it. And remember to breathe!
5. Park Far Away
Next time you hit the mall, try parking in the back. Not only will you save yourself the time you normally spend circling for a great spot, but youâll also burn some extra calories walking to your favorite stores.
How Often Should You Do It:Â Whenever you have time to spare and are making a trip to the mall (or anywhere with a parking lot).
The Payoff:Â Burn extra calories!
Just Remember:Â Keep your pace at a brisk walk. And make sure youâre wearing sneakers or flats, not heels!
6 ways to be there for your bff when she's going through a breakup
Have you ever seen your BFF go through a breakup? Break ups suck, and itâs hard to watch one of your friends try to get over a guy. One of my BFFs has been having a really hard time getting over her ex recently, and Iâve realized that there are a few things to remember when dealing with a sad friend post-breakup:
1. Listen. I know, I know, it gets really boring to hear the same stories over and over again. There are only so many ways to analyze a break up, BUT it helps to vent to your friends. Just suck it up and listen, even if youâre sick of it. Youâd want them to do the same for you.
2. Distract them! When Iâm going through a breakup, I feel very entitled to mope and stay in my house. I have zero motivation to go out and be social. After a few days, maybe weeks, that starts to get old. I always end up feeling happier when my friends drag me out to cheer me up. Sometimes, you just need to force your friend to come out.
3. Be on their side. Telling a friend what she could have done differently or how she messed up is not going to be helpful at this point. Itâs best to just be supportive and remind them to take the blinders off. Itâs easier to look back and only remember the good times, but you can remind your friends about all the times when the ex Boyfriend wasnât so great after all. (Donât trash him though! You never know if theyâll get back together.)
4. Be honest and donât let them embarrass themselves. Example: Your BFF wants to text her exâs new girl to trash talk them at 1:00 AM on a Saturday night. Donât let her do that. She will regret it.
5. Surprise them! Chocolate, cupcakes, movie tickets, etc. Anything worksâitâs the thought that counts.
6. Give them time. Itâs corny, but itâs true. Breakups always seem less sad after some time has gone by, so keep reminding your friend or BFF of that fact and try not to let them dwell on it. Plusâthis just means that you have more alone time with your friend!
5 No Blow Dryer-Required Hairstyles
Who wants to waste precious beach time doing their hair? Ditch the hot tools when the temperatures riseâthese fun, easy styles make going from the pool to a party a total breeze!
1. Sleek Ponytail
If youâre in a total rush to get to an afternoon BBQ, slick it back into a ponytail! Use a fine-tooth comb to smooth wet hair straight back, and secure with a fun, neon hair tie. As it dries, twirl your 'tail around your finger to create natural, bouncy waves!
2. Side Twist
This cool update to the side pony isso easy to doâit's even quicker than braiding! Pull your hair to one side and separate into two sections. Twist both sections the same direction as you wrap them around each other in the opposite direction.Â
3. Textured Topknot
Salt water, wind, and sand leave your hair with tons of natural texture. To give your average topknot extra oomph, skip the post-beach shampoo and use your fingers to rake your hair up into a loose, messy bun. Pin in place and finish with some light-hold hairspray to set.
4. Braided Ponytail
When it's a million degrees out, keep your hair off your face with this fun style. Make a deep side part, then start French-braiding a three-inch piece of hair on the thicker side of the part. Continue down your head. Pull the rest of your hair into a low side ponytail, leaving about a two-inch piece of hair out. Wrap the piece around the top of your ponytail, securing with a bobby pin to cover the elastic.
5. Cute Scarf
If your hair is just not cooperating, cheat with a headscarf! Pile your strands on top of your head and secure with bobby pins into a messy bun, then just tie a printed scarf around like a headband. So cute!
Hair Care 101: 6 mistakes you're making while washing
From shampooing every day to taking super-hot showers, find out which hair-washing mistakes could be hurting your hairâplus, what to do instead.Â
1. Washing it every day, like clockwork
Stylists say your hair looks best when the natural oils that start in the scalp are allowed to reach the ends. That's why they recommend shampooing every other dayâor even every third day. If youâre worried about your strands looking greasy, spritz the roots with dry shampoo or water and restyle with a blow-dryer.
2. Two-timing your favorite shampoo
Some think switching up shampoos can make your hair look healthier, but experts say stick with what works (if it already works, that is). Your hair can't tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product. However, if you have very oily hair or like to use sticky styling products with wax in them, you should break up your routine with a clarifying shampoo once every couple of weeks or soâthis will wash away any residue.
3. Overdoing it on shampoo and/or conditioner
Instead of shampooing and conditioning all the way through, concentrate shampoo toward the scalp, and condition just the mid-shaft to the ends of your hair. Your ends need more moisture (we develop âsplit endsâ for a reason), and your roots need a little less of it so they can maintain volume. The suds will run down from the top of your head and get those ends clean anyway.Â
4. Skipping the conditioner altogether
If you want shinier locks, use conditioner every time you wash. Bonus: Conditioner cuts down on friction and breakage when you brush your hair later. And did you know that you can use conditioner to wash your hair, sans shampoo? Since shampoo can be very harsh, it's a nice alternative once in awhile. Experts in the Good Housekeeping Research Institute Beauty Lab tried it and found that while conditioner may not do the deep cleaning most shampoos will, it will still leave your hair feeling and looking nice.
5. Taking super-hot showers
While warm water opens a hair's cuticle to allow shampoo and conditioner to do their job, cold water helps to close the cuticle and seal in moisture from the conditioner â which helps your hair look shiny and healthy. So, by all means, take a warm shower, but at the end, rinse with cold water. If you really don't like cold showers, stylists recommend pouring one cup apple cider vinegar mixed with two cups water over hair after washing and conditioning. Vinegar is a gentle exfoliator that removes product build-up and dandruff from the scalp.
6. Rinsing too much (if you have colored hair)
Since colored hair absorbs and releases water much more easily, when the water leaves, so does some of the color. So hold off on rinsing for those few extra minutes. Also, stick to lukewarm or cooler water since heat makes you lose color faster.
