"It takes a village" is a common phrase about raising kids, so maybe centaurs connect amorous groups to be for raising children, so having multiple partners for diversity in raising the kiddos just makes sense. (And you look really cute wearing the flower crown! Your tags about the centaurs made me think of them making flower crowns for date mates similar to like promise rings or proposal rings)

Typically, they have one watching the children and keeping an ear out for trouble, one gathering the food, and one resting
If there are more in the group, they split the duties between them
Also, multiple family groups make up a herd, and are often made up of close friends
So basically
3 or more adults involved romantically + their children = family group
Multiple family groups + individuals that hunt + travel together = a herd
However there are also non-traditional family groups, but they may not be considered a proper family outside their herd, bc its more difficult to survive that way without the safety of a herd
Then there are lone centaurs that leave their herds to either work or to start their own family groups like matthew

Ok ok so
There are five genders (its a bit more complicated than just sex or gender, as both are more or less meaningless, gender is just the easiest way to put it) and each serves their own purpose within mermaid society

The first gender is the one most often seen on the surface, the lures. They're very pretty, and often have long hair and nice singing voices, and often are quite vain. They often work with the hunters, luring food into the water.
Next are hunters. They are the ones that actually catch the food, and are nearly impossible to spot before they grab you. They often blend into their hunting grounds and have very sharp teeth, perfect for ripping into their prey.
Following that are the transients, hunters that double as lures. They are rare, often caught while they are very young, and treated as royalty in the courts of Skiylia, though there are a few in Rasmium as well, as they are prized both for their beauty and hunting ability
Even rarer to find are the royals-- they fit into none of the above categories, and being born one earns an automatic invitation to live in the palace under the sea, having every want and need provided for. It's a very comfortable thing
And finally, there are those that follow the deity (essentially priests and priestesses), that can fall into any of the four other genders, but are marked with the diety's blessing, excusing them from their former duties
(The deity is the parent of all mermaids as well as water sprites and the concept of stormy seas, so they are pretty important, and their followers are considered pretty important too)
