The rogue was still angered from Lotus’s comment. At this moment, he would’ve at least take the chance for revenge now. Yet he seemed puzzled by the rhetorical question.

This topic was asked a lot to him. Just thinking about ‘why’ was always asked from Gaston. And he still had many ways of replying. As for now, he needed to respond in weak defense, dodging at least a portion of the question.

Lotus tilted his head—was Phantom really that foolish to believe he couldn’t kill anyone while he followed this path? As the spirit had already learned, as long as the world existed, there would be those who opposed the Black Mage’s way. They would preserve their home, no matter the cost. Lotus didn’t entirely understand it himself, but when humans got like that? They were unstoppable, against all odds.

“As long as you follow him, the people of this world will defy you. I wonder… could you really face them? The heroes – they were your friends once, were they not? Do you really believe you can get by without killing them?” The spirit had an unsettling grin as he spoke, knowing Phantom would have quite a difficult time accomplishing that regardless of what his answer was.

“Honestly, Phantom. I have no idea what kind of world you think the Black Mage will create, but he doesn’t care about you. He didn’t care about me or any of his other commanders, and he never will. You are deluded if you believe the outcome will favor you in any way.”

Phantom pondered for a short amount of time. He was not having any doubt, but the thought of his old comrades faintly didn’t give any sign of emotion either. Then again, from second thought, this isn’t the Lotus he might have faced. It’s a conflict whether he should see if he is right or not.

Phantom didn’t become fully loyal to the Black Mage. No, the thief still kept a good side and even kept the Skya a secret from the other commanders. All he wanted to do is to run away from his grief and see what he can do to get it away.

It was true that Phantom’s words cut quite a bit. Now that Lotus had proper emotions and an actual frame of reference—he did feel some regret for the Empress’s death. She hadn’t truly deserved it, but he felt sorry for her and Cygnus, not Phantom.

Although… the spirit was wondering about something. It was far out of his understanding, but it was love that drove Phantom this far, wasn’t it? Sure, Lotus’s actions were the catalyst… but if Phantom hadn’t cared as much as he did…

It made Lotus feel even worse.

Love was a thing that drove people to toss every ounce of logic out the window. It caused them to go against all sense of sanity. Looking at himself, not even he was immune. Lotus knew if it ever came to it, he’d face the Black Mage with his bare hands if it was what he had to do to protect Orchid. This incarnation of Phantom was no different for his beloved Aria, despite the hypocrisy.

But as long as Lotus held his guilt as his most hidden secret, he held much above Commander Phantom—at least he thought he did. He had endless ways to pick at this lovelorn farce of a man.

“To think you and I have swapped places. How amusing,” Lotus cackled at him. He had absolutely no desire to continue in the Mage’s footsteps ever since Black Heaven, having realized he was a mere pawn on the chessboard.

“Shouldn’t you be asking yourself the same thing? Your precious empress wanted peace more than anything. Haven’t you realized by now that I slew her at the Black Mage’s behest? And here you are, prancing about like the Mage wouldn’t command you do the same to anyone who gets in his way.”

Ah, yes. Lotus felt nothing but pity for the creature that stood before him.
