Wingding was created by a human mage years before the war started. The humans’ magic is what brought him to life, without it he'd be a regular doll. He was sealed in mt ebbott with the monsters because his creator didn't want him to be killed, and they knew that the monsters wouldn't hurt him.
Fifty years passed, and the humans’ magic was still what kept him alive. The mage died of old age, and soon after, Wingding’s health began to deteriorate. There was nothing that anyone could do for him, as he didn't have a soul of his own, rather, he had a small piece of his mage’s soul inside of him.
As the soul shard weakened, so did Wingding. He knew he was dieing. In a last ditch attempt to save himself, he convinced sans, who worked under the royal scientist at the time, to give him some DT.
While initially the experiment worked, later that day Wingding once again began to weaken, much faster than before. He knew that it would be next to impossible to convince sans to give him more DT, but he wasn't going to give up and die.
His own drive to live, his own DETERMINATION is what pulled him into the void. Here, his patchwork legs disappeared, and in their place was a pillar made up of the same material as the void. This substance also coated the majority of his upper body, leaving only his head and the neck of his sweater uncovered.
Had he not been so driven to live, his “soul” would have simply faded out and his body would have been that of a regular doll. An empty shell.
He does not have arms or hands, rather he is capable of levitating whatever item he needs, as long as it is within a certain weight limit (Probably ~50lbs).
His eyes are buttons. His right eye is cracked and is missing half of it. He can see fine through it.
His body is made up mostly from scraps of cloth. Clothing that is too worn out to wear, squares from a tattered blanket, whatever scraps his creator was able to find. His body is multi coloured. Pinks and whites and greens and blues and everything else.
There was more care put into his head. His creator made that first, and very carefully searched for tatters of the same colour. His head is entirely white. The scars are rips that he had to fix himself after being sealed. His creator would have done a better job.
He wore black pants. His creator had originally given him their old pants that were too small for them. He keeps the pants in a drawer in his home. The grey turtleneck he wears was given to him by his creator. It was a gift from their mother that they wanted Wingding to have. They cut off the sleeves and sewed them shut, using the sleeves to make mittens for themselves and giving the edited sweater to Wingding.
((SOOOO much of this has been retconned its actually rly funny to see how much has changed about him. i didn’t even originally plan for him to exist in underswap!
