Summary: Five times Maes Hughes looks at Roy Mustang. One time Roy Mustang looks back.

An unbiased observer would perhaps say that Roy deserves the nightmares, deserves that the memories of what he’s done follow him every waking moment, and every moment that he’s not awake as well. Deserves being haunted in his sleep, where he’s defenseless, where he can’t escape, can’t distract himself, where he always has to experience the horrors of Ishval again and again until the end of his days. Maes is not unbiased.

Concept:

Roy is a stupid idiot with a giant unrequited crush on Hughes, officially, they’re just two best friends who sometimes go out for some drinks. One morning, Roy wakes up half-naked. Hughes is making breakfast. Roy has no recollection of the last night.

Roy spends some agonizing days unsure if they fucked or not. Hughes never brings it up, so Roy won’t either, but he *doesn’t know* and it drives him crazy. Doesn’t help that Hughes accidentally innuendos the whole time.

Hughes: “Last night was pretty fun.” Roy: “…” Hughes: “Didn’t know you could do that thing with your mouth. Very impressive, man.” Roy: *internally screaming*

This must be what being an alcoholic feels like, he sometimes thinks while staring at the bottom drawer of his desk as if a snake was hiding inside, one that could immediately lunge at him should he set it free. As if he’d caged a wild, venomous animal, one he was unable to stop thinking about, to check back if it was still where he had seen it five seconds ago.

Too bad that he himself is this animal, too bad that his own thoughts are the poison.
