“Ah, I see”, Azrael simply replied with a small chuckle. “These are quite extraordinary…”
He still couldn’t quite stop staring the the flowers but tried his best to carry on with their little conversation.
“My favourite flowers used to be lilies in fact, especially the red ones. They are quite eye catching. The white ones are quite lovely, too. In recent years, I have grown quite fond of hydrangeas as well… an old friend of mine had them in his garden and I can’t quite figure out why, but they fascinated me.”
He was lost in thought for a few seconds, fingertips still carefully wandering over the flowers, eyes studying their petals. Suddenly he looked up at his friend and asked: “What are your favourite flowers, Rene?”
It felt somehow weird using his name… he would stick to ‘petite lièvre’ in the future. It rolled off his tongue a lot easier.

Rene smiled happily as he admired the flowers. Partially because he had taken great care to raise them, but also because it simply brought his heart joy for them to see them appreciated.
“Oui, lillies are quite lovely as well. The white ones tend to stand for purity, as many white flowers do, while the red for passion. As a whole, they symbolize life and rebirth.” He would make sure to remember those, for the next time he brought Azrael a little gift. “As for hydrangea, they have a few different ones...Understanding, grace, boasting, an apology-- to name a few. Though their sensitivity to soil contents make them fascinating to grow even without meaning. Their flowers change color based on the acidity level in the soil, so one can change it with some encouragement.”
Personally, he had never worked with them. But what he had read on the flower made Rene curious to test if that fact was true. How lovely that would be, to change the blossoms into an array of different colors!
Silence settled between them for a moment once Rene was done sharing his knowledge. He watched Azrael, curious but hesitant, until he looked up. The question wasn’t as surprising as the demon using his name, as such, it took his mind a moment to process what he had asked.
“I am fond of daffodils! Much like lilies, they are a symbol of rebirth and life. Every year without fail, even if they do not blossom, they still break free of the earth come spring. It is admirable, non?”
