But honestly, where would Fisher go? What would he do? Without the ship...

He started to wonder how much shorter and simpler life would have been if he had said no.

The Guardian offered up the chunk of tail meat he had ripped off. Maybe if the creature had a taste, his life still could be much, much shorter.
