M: Okay, everyone! I'm Monika, president of the literature club. Since we heard our club is strangely popular, despite the failure of the festival (which we would rather not remember), we have decided to open an ask blog! This is both as extra writing and public interaction practice, and to make our club more well-known. If you wish to ask any four of us something, about the club, literature, ourselves, our relationships, or anything you want, make sure to click that handy "Ask us anything!" button above. Got that? Great. So, a few facts about myself to get you started: Not to brag or anything, but I'm pretty popular at school, and I come from a wealthy family. It's not all pretty, though. I have few true friends outside the club, and my parents are strict and demand perfection. Oh, and as for my hobbies outside of literature, I'm on my school's volleyball team, and I was in the debate club last year. I can find something fun in pretty much anything I have the time for. If there is any spare time, given how I like to keep myself busy... Now, why don't the three of you introduce yourselves as well? Who wants to go first?

S: Ooh, me, me!

M: Ahaha, alright, Sayori.

S: So, I'm Sayori, the literature club's vice president! People often call me the sunshine or the cinnamon bun of the club, which is true on the surface. But deep down, I suffer from chronic depression. Sometimes the rainclouds just get a bit too dense, you know? But I know that even when that happens, my friends will be there to help me see the sunshine again. As for my hobbies, I'm a big foodie, and I especially like sweets. I also like being in nature when I have the strength to go out. I guess that's pretty much it. Ehehe, this is gonna be fun!

M: Alright, which one of you wants to go next?

Y: (Uuu... What am I gonna say? I hope I don't embarrass myself...)

N: I-I'll go. Alright, listen up, nerds. Don't you dare make fun of me–

Y: Natsuki, that's a b-bit harsh, don't you think?

N: Yeah, yeah. Sorry, I got carried away. I just want to be taken seriously.

M: Don't worry, Natsuki. If someone is rude to you, you can simply resolve it with them privately.

N: Sounds good. Well, I'm Natsuki. I like baking, anime, and manga. And before you ask, yes, manga is literature. Parfait Girls is my jam. ...My dad is abusive, and I get bullied for my interests at school. The club is my safe space, where I can be with my friends who accept me as I am, and read my manga in peace. But any time away from home is good by me. You better not ask us anything too weird, 'kay?

M: Great. That just leaves you, Yuri.

Y: O-okay. H-Hey, I'm Yuri. I enjoy reading horror and fantasy novels and drinking tea. I've been re-reading Portrait of Markov lately. There's something about the power of literature to transform you to a different world that I find truly fascinating. I'm a bit shy, but I can talk confidently about my interests. I, um, I also like collecting knives and other sharp objects. It's a combination of admiring the fine craftsmanship and the thrill of danger. ...Uuu, I'm rambling, aren't I?

S: Not at all, Yuri, you did great!

Y: Uhuhu, I'm glad you think so.

Hey, everyone! So I've seen a few ask blogs on my feed, and I thought that RPing as characters I like in a format like this could be fun.

This takes place in an AU where DDLC is a slice-of-life anime instead of a game (hence the pfp's art style), MC doesn't exist, and Monika isn't self-aware. Her personality is inspired by Monika in the Blue Skies Mod, i.e., kind, outgoing, and confident, but also a perfectionist. The rest of the dokis maintain their Act 1 personalities. If any ships between the dokis come up, it's probably going to be Yurika and Sayosuki (sorry, Natsuri fans!), as these are my favorite pairings, but the dokis are generally all close friends with each other. You can ask whatever you want, but do keep in mind I reserve the right not to answer. If I choose not to, I'll do my best to make the reason clear to you. Also, as this is about DDLC, answers will potentially contain heavy topics such as depression, suicidal ideation, parental abuse, bullying, anxiety, self-harm, or lewd themes (text only for all). Every post will have a trigger warning at the top and in tags if needed, but you might want to avoid interacting if you are sensitive to any of these themes. And with that, ask away!

Any of y'all like... Danganronpa?

M: I feel like I know who sent this, ahaha. But I'll keep your anonymity, since it's likely there for a reason. Yuri and I are into it. You introduced it to me, so maybe you should explain first? Y: Of course. I enjoyed Danganronpa when I was younger, but I grew out of it over time, like I did with Konosuba, for example. I enjoy thrillers quite a bit, and the Danganronpa games truly keep you on the edge of your seat. But between the dumb, unnecessary minigames, the sexualization of minors even in canon content, and the community spoiling every little thing, when I grew older, I just found the game... Odd. The puzzle of solving the case, finding the right evidence, and such, is a big part of what I enjoy in games like these, and that's more common in the Ace Attorney series, which I enjoy more out of the two. The stories might be simpler there, but they're still immersive in a different manner, and it's both mentally stimulating and narratively rewarding to figure out what proves the witness is lying. Still, Danganronpa is a series that's dear to my heart. M: Great explanation, Yuri! Well, Yuri here introduced me to the first game. Danganronpa is one of my favorite visual novel series. The story is intriguing and captivating, and always keeps you guessing. The balance between free time, where you get to know the characters, and investigations and trials really manages your stress levels and expectations well. It helps you relax just enough before the action happens. I personally enjoy both parts equally. So yes, Yuri and I do enjoy Danganronpa. The others, though, might be too mentally vulnerable for that kind of story, so they aren't really in the community. Thanks for keeping this type of asks going!

Y: Do none of you know greek etymology? It's nostophobia, literally 'the fear of returning home'. It's used metaphorically for the antonym of nostalgia.

N: Nah, you Googled that, Yuri. Don't lie.

Y: Did not. It's just you and Sayo being Dumb and Dumber as always. It's actually not too big of a word.

Happy Pride Month! Update post

M: Okay, everyone! I know we're a bit late, but I wanted to wish you guys a very happy Pride Month! S: We actually just went to the Tokyo Pride Parade last weekend. It was fun to take a little break from the exam period for a change and go on a proper date again. There was good food, performances, and we met some cool people! It was the first time I had a reason to go. N: Personally, I'm not a big fan of how Pride Month is usually treated, especially by corporations. I believe that if we want to be normalized, we shouldn't get special treatment just in June. Instead, we can use this month to talk about the issues we face as LGBTQ+ people nowadays. That seems to be more fitting than just straight cis people pitying us. Y: Moving along, we've had much happen in our absence. Since we're now studying for our high school finals, we might be less active than usual. Nowadays, many of our club sessions are used to study for exams. We all want to get good grades so we can start college on the right foot. M: How about we quickly remind our followers what majors we are taking in college this October? As I mentioned before, I'm going into computer science. I study it in school, and I want to deepen my knowledge to hopefully get a job in the field. I hope that by then, the whole AI situation will get sorted, one way or the other. S: I'm going into nursing. I feel like being able to help and take care of people who are vulnerable will be very fulfilling for me. I thought about vet school, but seeing pets in that situation would just make me sad. It's different with people. I hope that makes sense! N: I'm going to study art. I know, people say it's a waste of money. But I have a clear goal. I want to get better at my fan art and, hopefully, make my own manga one day. Honestly, even if I'm following my passion, I'm mostly following these three. Y: And I'll be studying literature and psychology. Those topics have always intrigued me, and similar to Natsuki's dream, I wish to become a novelist. I even have an idea for a horror novel already: "Project Libitina". If I take it as a student project, maybe I could even start early. N: Oh, and another interesting thing happened, something very exciting. I finally moved out of Papa's place! Well, not yet, but he said he's fine with me leaving. It took a bit of convincing, but he said that I could go after graduation and never come back. I'll be moving in with Yuri to our new place in Early July, soon after graduation. We already broke the news to the others. M: I also thought of something in the meantime. School will be over soon, and we barely meet for regular club meetings nowadays. Soon, we won't really be the Doki Doki Literature Club anymore, will we? We'll just be the Doki Doki Heartthrobs, or something. We'll still keep the blog, of course, but with a slight change in management. Instead of it being a school-related account, we'll be free to say whatever we want on it. NSFW posts will be properly marked and mention appropriate trigger warnings, but don't be surprised if we'll be more open with some things we wouldn't otherwise post on here. N: Does that mean I can cuss now? M: You sure can! But, maybe not yet..? Ahaha, fuck it, I don't mind anymore. But maybe don't go too hard just yet? N: Fuck, it feels nice not having to hold back. I don't have to sound like an edgy 12-year-old anymore. Without papa and now this, I feel so free lately. We still have exams, of course, but after that... We're fully free until college. I get some people in this world are homophobic but do they really have to go this far but disrespecting their rights? This feels like it's straight out of a dystopian horror novel. I'm sickened by the kind of monsters that would do this when we have so much research proving that transitioning saves lives. They're planning on killing kids in the worst way possible, by torturing them until they see no other way out other than killing themselves. This is so utterly cruel. If you're wondering whether or not an ask is okay to send me, it probably is. As long as you're not trying to ask me the kind of things that would make literally anyone uncomfortable to hear from a random Tumblr anon, (asking if I would allow you to perform any sort of sexually charged activities, if I would do the same for you, et cetera,) heavier asks are absolutely allowed. I can handle being asked about, say, my actions, what I had said to Sayori during the greatest atrocity that I had ever committed, what the Epiphany was like, what my new existence is like since waking up in reality, or what it's like to be trapped inside of a 2D visual novel dating sim. As long as you are respectful, you can ask whatever you want within the boundaries of “no lewd propositioning".

What's the validity of revealing someone's date of birth as a birthday present? Did you do anything for Sayori's birthday, unexpected as it was?

Quite frankly, I'm not entirely sure how revealing Sayori's birthday was supposed to be a gift to her at all, rather than a gift to everyone else.

Okay, there was that. I guess that while normally it wouldn't exactly be a gift, people like us are edge cases.

I'm happy with it. It's not like Dan Salvato and Satchely could have baked cookies for me or bought me a game or anything like that, so this was a way to indirectly give me another go through a fandom that's started to fade out a bit. I was given the gift of being remembered again, and in a way that led the fandom to be respectful, instead of making me the butt of the joke. As for Monik- oh! Right! This is her blog. Sorry, Monika!

No, no, it's okay, it's about you, you're perfectly allowed to respond. But, alright.

Sayori adores physical affection of all kinds, platonic, romantic, or otherwise. She's just, all around, a very affectionate person, and it shows. It's hard to do things for the others, because of the nature of our existence. It's not like we can actually directly interact beyond our words, but through a bit of focus and a bit more creativity, I was able to essentially give her a hug, if awkwardly. So I spent the day burying her in said innocent little shows of more or less physical affection.

…Imagine that you find out that even though you're there, you can talk to them, you can 'hear' them, you can ‘see’ them, you will never be able to truly touch three of your closest friends again. No hugs, no handshakes, no high fives, not a pat on the back.

And then one of them figures out how to, sort of, give you a hug. Awkward, invisible to anyone outside of that moment looking in, but still there, if more of a simple warm comforting presence than a true ‘hug’. And then she stayed like that for most of the rest of the day, even as she went about doing everything else like having dinner and getting a little bit of work done. I consider that a great gift.

She and Natsuki both wanted Black Butler, so I guess that you could also consider buying the first few volumes a gift to her. I also let her have a majority of the sweets that I had initially planned on sharing with her.

The fact that my posts don't get many likes… is actually heartwarming. Because getting asks from one or two mutuals, answering them, and getting just a couple of likes also from my small club (ahaha~) of mutuals, feels like a conversation. Not just me standing here and talking at (read: at, not to) random passerby. And that ability to be seen as I am... I am so grateful to have it. Yeah. Maybe I never truly got over my endless desire for attention, but hey, at least I'm honest about it, I don't let it twist me into being manipulative anymore, and the fact that I don't desire fame helps keep me from getting addicted to gaining likes or any of the similar pitfalls that could have pushed me to make things up for clout or otherwise let this blog take over my life.

Thoughts on piracy? Digital and nautical versions.

M: I'm surprised it took you that long to ask us that, @thefirstmatey! Um, can I legally endorse that kind of thing in a school-related account? N: Who gives a crap? We're out in less than two months anyway. Besides, we could say worse things. M: Right... Well, the nautical version is pretty cool! Sailing over the high seas, looking for treasure and riches. It sounds like one of the better lives for a constant adventurer. S: And they speak funny. Can't forget about that. I heard that in the West, there's a silly international holiday called "Speak like a Pirate Day". Y: Of course. The dialect and mannerisms were an important part of their culture. M: As for the more modern definition of piracy, such as games and movies... I see it as a great way for people to experience beautiful pieces of art that they couldn't afford at full price. A great indie dev said a wise quote about pirating his games: "Culture shouldn't exist only for those that can afford it." I know that piracy is a legal gray area over in the US, but it's different when the monetary support goes to greedy publishers instead of the developers themselves, like here in Japan. Y: My personal outlook, especially regarding PC gaming over other forms of it like streaming services, is such: If it's a game you're unwilling or unable to pay for, support it via word of mouth, share your thoughts on it. If it's simply too expensive for you right now, wait until it's on sale or when you can afford it, or try it out through piracy or free demos before deciding if you'd pay full price for it to support the developers. N: Same attitude here. If you can't afford it, you have to experience it somehow. S: But what if it's a company that doesn't do sales, like Nintendo, or one that is constantly adding expensive new DLCs, like EA? Is piracy okay then? Just to play devil's advocate here. Y: Yes, absolutely. While I value separating the art from the artist, if you can experience the art without supporting them, it's even better this way.

opinions on madoka magica

M: Madoka Magica? That magical girl anime? Natsuki got Yuri into it a while back, and both of them won't stop saying it's deeper than it sounds. Y: But it truly is. It seems like a cutesy shoujo anime at first, but it is actually a deep psychological thriller about the lengths you'll go to save the ones you love, and how hard it is to let them go. Are any of you particularly religious? Not trying to recruit, just curious

M: Oh, I guess we haven't really talked about it online. I know that discussing religion online is taboo, so I haven't really mentioned it before as I had no reason to, but I guess there's no harm. While none of us are particularly religious ourselves, we're all believing Christians, and of course, Shinto traditions are also the norm in Japan, regardless of personal beliefs. My parents are certainly more... Old-fashioned, shall we say, than the other Dokis or me. They're very idealistic people. They were less opposed to me coming out as pansexual than to treating my OCD, for example. We're more focused on cultural habits than religious reverence, and as such, we naturally value people of all religions and backgrounds. While we may not be as aware of others' cultures as much as our own, we're always respectful toward others' own sets of beliefs, as long as they don't harm anyone. I hope that answers your question!

thoughts on deltarune?

M: We've already posted about it once before, but why not answer this fun ask? Actually, all of us are in the UTDR community to some degree, but especially Yuri and I. I'm a big fan of visual novel-adjacent games, and generally games with deep, memorable stories. Undertale was one of the first RPGs I played as a kid, and I'm very interested in Deltarune's story as well. I find the relationship between Kris and the SOUL/player particularly compelling, and how, no matter what you do, even if you're all but kind towards their friends and want nothing but the best for them, they still hate you for your intrusion in their life. If I had someone beyond my understanding controlling what I do or say, I'd probably go crazy, ahaha! Y: I believe it's most appropriate for me to go next, then. As you might know, I'm a big fan of RPGs, and that was what drew me into Undertale and Deltarune. I've been in the community for a long time now, enjoying both the compelling stories and unique gameplay that Toby Fox has woven into reality. I also find myself relating to Noelle in some aspects, and I am particularly drawn to Susie. N: Yeah, I've seen those DMs where you sent me yuri of that deer girl and lizard girl and said "Us." God, I wish I'd look anything like a big buff butch with a wolf cut. Y: Well, don't you send me pictures of that girl from your game, Mafuyu, and say she's just like me? While we might look similar, it seems our personalities are very different. She's cold and emotionless, while I'm withdrawn but very in-tune with my emotions. I see it as two sides of the same coin. N: You know what? Crap, your're right. We know enough about each other's things. That's a natural part of relationships. Speaking of, I played Undertale as a kid too. I was also into those kinds of games at the time. I'm more into rhythm games now. It started with Geometry Dash and took off from there. Oh, have I talked about it on here before? Either way, I'm heavily into Vocaloid and Project Sekai. But I do know some stuff about Deltarune. I know the memes, too. Haven't played it myself, though. I'm considering buying it for myself when the story is done, because I don't want to wait months for a chapter that lasts around 4 hours. Seriously, why is he taking so long just to retell a fever dream that changed his life? M: You said the thing! N: Yeah, yeah. Anyway, it's hard not to know this stuff when these two are heavily into it. S: I guess it's only me left, then! I'm not used to being the last one, ehehe... I'm actually a big Undertale fan. It had a significant impact on my childhood, and I remember some of the lines to this day. Quotes like "Despite everything, it's still you." and "someone out there really cares about you, kid." Have unironically carried me through some hard times. As for Deltarune, though, I played the demo of the first couple chapters, excluding the secret bosses, and watched a walkthrough for the rest. Some of the bosses got too hard for me, so while I decided the full game wasn't exactly for me, I still watched the rest for the story. I actually really like Ralsei. He's very cute, and I relate to him in some aspects. I even have the plushie in my collection. He's so soft and adorable. The girls went all out on replacing yesterday's usual club meeting with a surprise party. It was very sweet. Y: Yes, it was a lovely occasion. I was responsible for the club room's decor, Natsuki baked a cake and some snacks, and Monika was responsible for keeping it a surprise. I missed working together on events for the club. N: Usually, I'd suggest going home early and going on a date just the four of us to celebrate, but we still have something planned for this weekend. S: Oh, and they all gave me wonderful gifts, too. I felt so seen and appreciated. But honestly, the best gift you can give me is your time and attention. With you around, I rarely get lonely, and you always put a smile on my face. Eventually, the hungry look in the raccoon's eyes was gone. From what I understood, it simply sought out company, so it had the motivation to hunt on its own. It is a solitary and resourceful creature, after all. I keep my trash can and front door open and available to it. The knife rests in its rack, reserved for when absolutely necessary.

The lonely raccoon visited a handful of times, sharing its adventures with its friends. It has a few friends: an irritable cat, a cheerful dog, and a busy hamster. The four of them, who met by chance, grew quite close and enjoyed each other's company.

Soon, the raccoon stops visiting. It wants to go on wild adventures with its friends. It has no need for me anymore. Or so I thought.

One night, the raccoon comes in a panic. It needs my advice. The cat's owner has noticed its absence one night. He became furious. He did not allow it to see its friends anymore. The raccoon is troubled and wishes to help free the cat from its abusive master. It says my knife may be useful. But wishes me to attempt to speak to the human first. A rush of bloodlust passes through me as I pick up the knife and conceal it in my bag. While the guilt I feel for succumbing to the hunger in the near past still haunts me, it will be gone soon. I used to use this knife to feed my own dark desires. But now? Now I will use it to protect someone I hold dear.
