Hey, I’ve started reading Guiding Light and wanted to share my initial impressions. I really do appreciate you writing Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Guiding Light. Generation seven was my favorite at the time that you wrote it, and I would’ve wanted a mystery dungeon game all that so badly, but your story ended up being a heavy influence on me. It motivated me to create my own Pokémon characters and stories, and it led me to meet several friends. I’ve only started reading the story more seriously recently, and I do think there are several problems with it, like some of the dialogue being kind of corny, and the special episodes can be a little longer than necessary. Still, it’s definitely above most other fan works. Shane is deeply flawed, self-centered, and extremely ignorant of how his actions affect others, and he hides behind a facade of heroism because he doesn’t wanna deal with his problems. I know he’s written to be unlikable, especially at the beginning, but as somebody who does a lot of stupid things sometimes, I can relate to him a lot, though I doubt I would do some of the things that he did. Honestly, the biggest problem with him is that we initially don't understand his mindset, which makes it hard for us to understand his actions. Plus the him being revealed as dark matter doesn't help things it feels more like a justification of his earlier action, and Tessa having to learn to deal with him and dealing with her own issues of self esteem was an interesting direction to go, especially since in the Pmd games, hero is the one that generally helps the partner, but that this fanfiction kind of plays on the expectation and it becomes more so about them initially hurting each other, and then solely helping deal with their own issues. As for the main villains of the story, Prisma/Zero and Necrozma/Nicky. I think one works far better for the fanfiction as a whole compared to the other, and I think it's Prisma/Zero. Prisma/Zero refuses to let go of the things she previously had and is willing to do anything to get them back, even if it hurts everyone around her, regardless of the damage it causes to other people. She could have let go of those things and probably could have found happiness, but instead, she lasted out when her escapism didn't work. Necrozma/Nicky, on the other hand, is supposed to represent somebody who lashes out at everyone when they feel like they were wronged, especially Shane.
Well, there's nothing wrong with this. I feel like a lot of the dialogue for him basically comes down to the idea that “Everything sucks, you suck, so going to destroy everything.” Necrozma is intended to be a force of nature, a powerful Pokémon, and having these wrong rants about why everything sucks in the story kind of takes it away. I feel like his connection to Shane is more of an excuse to make him feel bad about himself, when Prisma/Zero could easily fulfill that role just based on the Merit that she could represent what Shane could become if he gave into his selfish desires, and how those affect the people around them, primarily on how she affects Tessa through her selfishactions of abandoning her and. Shane should be more concerned about the possibility that he'll end up like Zero. Zero is stern and focused on accomplishing her goals, however selfish they may be, and is ultimately The Mastermind of most of the events of the story. Necrozma, in comparison, is a cracking joke, talking about how much everyone sucks, and it's just waiting for its chance to take over as the main antagonist, and waiting for its moment to make Shane feel bad. Treating Necrozma closer to its Ultra Sun and Moon counterparts, perhaps a bit less murky, and more so, just causing suffering for everyone, would have made him a more effective villain.
Sorry if this sounds ranty, but these are my honest thoughts. I like the story, and it has inspired many elements of my own. I wish you luck with Pokemon mystery Dungeon: Path of Valor. It has elements that I'm not personally interested in. Still, I know you're much more proud of that one compared to this one, and I know it isn't as popular as your first story, but if it's the one that you like more and enjoy writing more, you really shouldn't worry about it. Thank you for reading this if you do, and if you don’t, then I guess have a good rest of your day either way xd
I mean, yes, people say to write for yourself and that's all well and good. I wouldn't have finished drafting Path of Valor otherwise. But at the same time, it can also be true that you want something you're proud of to find an audience.
So, only having a couple of folks who actively read it these days is a bummer. It's close to where I was when I started out only putting Guiding Light on Serebii. Which, after doing this for so many years, is going to be upsetting no matter how you slice it.
