((TOLD YOU I’D DO IT! HELL YEAAAAA!! My first time actually drawing Toby, and I’m quite happy with it. ^^ For context, this was inspired by an RP thread where Kyung teaches Toby how to bake a cake! She’s so proud of him! 🥺))
Toby has made his way to Kyungs camp! He had spotted some of the sligs Kyung previously mentioned along the way, but despite being told they were the good kind he was still a little too nervous to introduce himself. Maybe one day he would be able to... but for now he just tried to keep a low profile. He popped his head into the cave and upon spotting Kyung, gave her a smile and a wave as he walked over. “Hi! I’m here for my baking lesson! Is now a good time?”
Kyung perked up once she saw Toby arrive at her campsite, the main den of the ground level cave’s doors were wide open so the Mud could walk right in. Situated on top of a long, wide stone slab that was scrubbed spotless were an arrangement of ingredients and utensils and a neatly folded apron set on the furthest end of it.
“Glad you could make it, Toby! Now’s a perfectly good time for the lesson,” She greeted back, perky as ever while waving back at him. “I also figured it’d be handy for you to have an apron too, it’s yours to keep if you’d like,” Kyung beamed, one paw gesturing to said apron. “Really helps in avoiding doing extra laundry.”
On the inside, the cave was incredibly large with a high ceiling, allowing plenty of space for what appeared to be quite a sophisticated indoor-outdoor hybrid kitchen! Slightly juxtapose to the more advanced setup was the use of various boulders to create makeshift tables, chairs, counters and stools, etcetera.
“I hope I chose a good beginner level recipe… I remember really loving this cake in certain parts of the Southwest region of my homeland, and the main ingredient used in it turns it into a really pretty purple color!~”
“Thank you.” He tied the apron and smoothed it out as he admired the kitchen and adjacent dining area. “I really like your kitchen, it’s so natural and open. A lot different from the hot and stuffy cooking areas I saw escaping Rupture Farms. Although I guess you can’t really call those kitchens…”
“A purple cake sounds great!. So, what’s the first step? Oh, I shoud wash my hands first, right?”
“Ah, I can imagine so. Then again, there are kitchens that are more like factory cooking stations, yet still qualify as ‘kitchens’…” She mused, eyes glancing up towards the cave ceiling for a moment before she nodded in confirmation at Toby’s guess on what he should do first, giving an approving smile while one of her paws gestured to a rather uniquely built sink. “Correct! Whether you’re baking or cooking, it’s always important to work with clean paws in the kitchen.
“I’ve already washed up before you got here, so you can go on ahead and use the sink,” She replied affirmatively.
Next to the scrubbed rock counter was a wash basin built and functional faucet into a large barrel with room for a bottle of citrus-scented soap, a roll of paper towels situated on the side, and a trash bin on the floor right next to the barrel sink. Once Toby was finished, Kyung was already situated at the counter ready to start the lesson. Of course, she had to also give an introduction to the key ingredient! While reaching over for the bowl containing a deep purple puree, Kyung grabbed a whole tuber-looking vegetable in another paw to show Toby.
“These here are a sweet yom called an ‘oobe’ by the locals where it grows!~ It’s naturally sweet like a mix of vanilla, white chocolate with a nutty taste that makes it a perfect natural flavoring for most desserts there. But there is a general rule that it must always be cooked before eating, while it’s a healthy tuber, it contains a mild toxin in its raw form,” She explained, handing the yom to Toby so he could get a closer look at it. “The recipe calls for it to be mixed into the batter after boiling and thoroughly mashing it into a paste, so I’ve already taken care of that part to save on time.”
Toby made sure to wash his hands thoroughly with soap and water, drying them after and throwing the paper towel away neatly. He returned to the counter next to Kyung and listened to her explain the key ingredient to him, his eyes lit up in approval as she described the taste.
"That sounds delicious." He studied the yom in his hands and gave it a curious sniff as he continued to listen and made a note of all the steps. "Always cook before eating... boil and mash into a paste... okay! So next we make the batter?"

It was mid morning when the zordokon was still feeling tired, but yet she couldn't go back to sleep, which is getting more irritating the more she tries to, so might as well get up and go on of her day. As she strolls through the village, looking below while at least knowing what direction she's walking to, sorta?
Then by surprise she unintentionally bumps past a mudokon who happens to be wearing jumper pants and a button up shirt. She didn't notice the mudokon walking by, which then startles her as she turns her head up and around with an alarmed and yet apologetic expression. "Oh, crap! I'm sorry, I didn't notice you there!" Sei then takes a couple steps back in case she might've startled this mudokon, too.
It just so happens that Toby hadn't woken up in the best state himself. Whether it was from a bad dream he immediately forgot upon waking or it was just 'one of those days', Toby wasn't sure. All he knew was that a feeling of anxiety had been plaguing him the entire morning and even the familiar comfort of his beloved manuals wasn't distracting him. After giving up on that, Toby decided he just needed to work off all the excess anxious energy he was feeling and a walk might do him some good.
With no particular direction in mind, and with his focus more on his own steps than his surroundings, it was no surprise he didn't notice he was right on a collision course with the zordokon. And taken by surprise in his still anxious state of mind, he ended up making an unnecessarily loud yelp as their shoulders knocked against each other.
He quickly clamped his mouth shut and took a step back the same time she did, trying to calm his breathing.
"No, it was my fault! Sorry I wasn't looking where I was going." Toby stared at his feet in embarrasement and hoped she didn't notice his overreaction.
From the sound of his yelp and the sight of him breathing heavily, Sei couldn’t help but feel bad for scaring him while she didn’t notice him passing by.
Shit, I startled him that badly, did I? Sei thought to herself as she looks down to her side.
As the mudokon spoke and apologized, the zordokon looks up at him along with noticing his embarrassment, which then makes her feel more bad, but at least he didn’t seem to do it on purpose. “It’s okay, no worries..But I really didn’t mean to startled you, I’m so sorry...” She then fiddles with her fingers. “I’ve must’ve been so tired..”
I wonder if he’s as tired as I am?
“Oh, I’m Sei. So, what’s your name? Are you new in this vil-” Sei then notices the RuptureFarms logo on the front of his jumper pants. Another former slave from RuptureFarms? She’s thinking that Alf must’ve known him since he came from the same factory as well, so he must’ve been around here for as long as Alf has been here in this village.
“Oh..”
Ah, she probably noticed didn't she? Now he looked weird and awkward. Not a great first impression...
He tried to calm his breathing as subtly as he could, feeling a little ashamed of himself. When she trailed off he blinked in confusion and tried to follow her gaze but couldn't spot where she was looking at. Was something wrong? Maybe he should just answer her question.
"Uhm... my name's Toby..." He paused awkwardly, trying to think of something else to say. "Uh... you're a friend of Alf's is that right? I've seen you at the rehab a few times..."
As his introduction catches her attention from looking at the familiar RuptureFarms logo on his jumper pants as she looks up at him. "Oh, sorry! I just noticed something familiar on your outfit, hehe..Well, hi, Toby, pleased to meet you."
Sei then nods as an answer. "That's right.. And you must be his brother because of that logo on your pants..Well, from what he told me about his brothers from that same place.."
"Yeah, I'm usually there..but I'm sorry I didn't see you around there..I don't always notice things.." Sei then scratches the back of her neck.
Oh right the Rupture Farms logo. That makes sense.
"Mmhmm." He nods in confirmation. "All of us from Rupture Farms are siblings. It's a little strange to think about..."
"It's okay, I don't usually get noticed." He said matter-of-factly. "I don't talk to people much. Not that I'm anti-social or anything I just... erm... I'm quiet." When he wasn't talking to his brother we was usually hidden away in a corner of the rehab. Staying under the radar had been useful in avoiding many dangerous situations in his old life, but now he was free Toby was having a hard time breaking the habit of quietly fading into the background.
"Alf's always encouraging me to talk more but I'm not as uhm... outgoing as he is."
Sei nods as she’s listening. “Yeah, that’s what Alf told me.” Which she was referring to the large number of siblings he has. “When he told me that a long while back, I was shocked, if I remember correctly..” Sei then taps her forehead and looks down to her side, trying to recall the rest of that conversation she had with Alf about the big family of his. “Is it…200? 250 of you guys? Sorry I don’t have much of a good memory..”
Sei nods as Toby continues, mentioning that he’s not that social. “Huh..I see..I used to be like that when I was younger.” The zordokon then lightly tugs at her cloth that’s tied to her feathers a bit nervously since memories of those certain encounters she had years ago are a bit unsettling, which she doesn’t want to reveal just yet. “But…that’s something I can talk about another time, heh..” She then still tugs at her feather tie as she looks up at him and continues. “I’ve gotten a bit social overtime and I’ve made some friends, but I still do my own thing, hehe.”
"There's 300 of us from the farm. Or... no, I think it's 301. I forget to count myself" He glanced at Sei's fins as she played with her tie and thought about what to say next.
"So, uhm, if I remember right you didn't arrive with the rest of us on the train. So where... where are you from?" What Toby really wanted to ask was if Sei was a different kind of mudokon as he'd noticed she looked different compared to him and the rest of the muds he knew. But he had a feeling it would be rude to just blurt that question out.
Kyung has stopped by to give Toby a gift! A little package of assorted candies from the looks of it: fragon beard candy, candied opple slices, and sweet red bean mooncakes!
"Hi, Toby! Some friends of mine and I made quite a lot of Lunar New Year treats, and I wanted to offer you some too. Hopefully these are ones that you'll like," She grins, offering the box to Toby.
“More treats? You’re so kind, thank you!” Toby’s eyes lit up as he admired the different candies, remembering how tasty the cookies Kyung made him last time were. He picked out a mooncake and gave it a taste.
“Mm! It’s good! You always have such yummy snacks, Kyung. I wish I knew how to make things like this…” Actually, now that Toby was thinking about it, it might not be a bad idea to learn something new. Especially if it could get him more sweet things to eat in the process.
He nibbled on the mooncake for a few more moments before shyly speaking up again. “Hey Kyung? If you’re not to busy… do you think you could teach me how to bake?”
The Jimseomi was beaming in unbridled joy that Toby approved of the snacks, softly clapping her paws. And then, the request to teach the Mud how to bake popped up, pleasantly surprising Kyung as she pressed her palms together and nodded her head eagerly.
“I’d be more than happy to, Toby! You’re always welcome to swing by my cave campsite, or I can certainly find a way to bring the lesson to you if that’s better,” She agreed enthusiastically, gaining a lively spark in her eyes. “There are many wonderful baked good recipes from my homeland, and a couple other continents I’ve been to as well that should make for great starters.”
Her enthusiasm was affecting Toby as well and he bounced on his heels excitedly as he listened to Kyung’s answer.
“Okay! I can come to you, I don’t mind. When should I come over?”
“Since I’ve been taking some time off, anytime in the day works for me! Here, it’s a bit far from the village, but you can’t miss it. When in doubt, you’ll know you’re close by it if you smell cooked food that leads to a large cave,” Kyung explained, taking out a spare map from her satchel so she could quickly etch a safe route for Toby to take in order to find her campsite, then handed it to him.
Just before she was about to say her goodbyes to the Mud, Kyung suddenly got a strange gut feeling about something, and her excited smile turned to a more pensive look.
“I…Oh goodness, I almost forgot!” Her eyes widened at this realization, but quickly calmed down. “Are you alright with being around Sligs…? Not the bad kind that are normally patrolling these parts of Mudos, but Sligs that are actually here to help protect escapee Mudokons?” Kyung delicately inquired.
"Sligs?" He fidgeted nervously. All his previous interactions with sligs didn't exactly leave him with a good impression of them, and the idea of being around them did scare him. But then again not every slig could be a bad person right? And he did trust Kyung enough that he didn't think she would put him in danger.
"If you say it's safe, then I think I'll be okay."
Kyung has stopped by to give Toby a gift! A little package of assorted candies from the looks of it: fragon beard candy, candied opple slices, and sweet red bean mooncakes!

{Elli}
"Hi there! I know my dad Big Face talks to ya often and I see you hanging around Abe a lot. I wanted to bring you a little something. I hope you like the stuff i picked out for ya and I hope we can be friends!"
*Inside the box Elli presents to Toby, there are a couple chocolate bars, A wooden train that appears to have been hand made and painted with wheels that can easily turn, and a couple books about various models of trains that exist on Oddworld.*

((Elli likes to present these kinds of packages where she gathers gifts of things that a person likes from what she was told about them. As a sign that she wants to be friends. her gift ideas might not always be accurate, but she tries her best.))
"Wow! Thank you so much!" Toby stared in awe at the presents before him. He flipped through one of the books excitedly, being careful not to damage it. After that he turned his focus on the toy train, seemingly hypnotised by the spinning wheels.
"This is amazing! Where did you get it from? Oh, should I give you a present too?" He suddenly worried there was some kind of social convention he didn't know about. "I don't have anything I can give you though... what kind of things do you like? Maybe I can find something for you."
