The stranger is found after some time, the brows of the pale man knitting as it dawns on him that he had likely been lingering for some time. For how long, he dreaded to know. He just knew he was there, staring, and it was enough to feel like all that fell under his gaze was burning.

To shield himself, the worn shovel was brought up to hide his gaunt face and his eyes were cast to the ground. His stomach was churning as his mind spiraled through the many reasons he may be staring, but eventually his tongue remembered how to form words.

"𝕾… 𝖘𝖙𝖆𝖙𝖊 𝖞𝖔𝖚𝖗 𝖇𝖚𝖘𝖎𝖓𝖊𝖘𝖘."

"... But what if I like what I'm seeing?"

The survivor bristled as he processed such a refutation, having yet another response he expressly wanted to avoid with his snapping. It was followed by a subtle squint, his gaze thorny to match his pale rose eyes.

He could not discern whether or not he was genuine. Perhaps he was simply unable to pick it apart from the many years of cruelty thrown at him. Whether or not the words were kind or barbed, of course, it did not matter. Regardless, any set of eyes laying upon it burned the moment he felt them upon his wretched skin. He cared so little for these sorts of compliments because of this, and so he could not find it within him to entertain them.

The grave keeper’s pinkish brown eye briefly widened, slowly lowering into a squint as he listened- leering at him as if he could try and read his intentions if he looked hard enough.

It took him a moment to process, clearly not used to such things as respect being given to him at all, let alone things so subtle as a gesture. Guilt crept into his eyes, suddenly drawn to the ground as he wrung his hands in a not-so-subtle worry.

The Gravekeeper had kept his eyes cast downwards, only nodding to affirm he had listened to his response. He was grateful, truly- finding it difficult to admit that he would not be as forgiving of a man to simply shrug off being snapped at. He was trying, but such things were weeds that had strongly taken root within him.

Though, he must remember that weeds were not always true menaces at their core. Sometimes, they were simply dubbed a nuisance by those who thought them ugly, but still had greater purpose regardless of what opinion was made about them.

The stranger would remind him of this as he felt fingers upon him, taking the opportunity presented by his lack of vigilance to play with one of his eggshell white locks before putting it away behind his ear. It began to burn the moment he felt his digits brush against it, the pale man’s cheeks turning pink at the unexpected compliment and his eyes finally flicking upwards only to be met with his gaze.

‘You’re too kind.’ were the words that first came to mind, a phrase that held much more suspicion of the man’s overly saccharine compliments. In this moment, he couldn’t tell if it was out of years long mistrust or if instinct was correct to be wary of him as he stared straight back at him.

“𝕯-𝖉𝖔𝖓’𝖙- 𝕴… 𝖕𝖗𝖊𝖋𝖊𝖗 𝖓𝖔𝖙 𝖙𝖔 𝖇𝖊 𝖙𝖔𝖚𝖈𝖍𝖊𝖉.”
