"Lady Bellum." The Heracross said lightly as the Meloetta arrived. This was not Ralph, the Heracross she had adopted. This one was much larger, and bright pink in coloration. Bellum had entered the area he had claimed as territory for his group, and she was an expected guest. Of course he would treat her with courtesy. At least, until she did something that broke the normal code of respect.
"You probably know why I am here, Antoine." She said carefully. "The Heracronite. For—"
"I am well aware of the young one you are looking after, Lady Bellum. You proposed the very idea I could look after him if something happened to you. While that idea was flattering, I’m afraid I am not the guardian type. This time, you are here to propose the idea I give custody of my prized mega stone to him, now that he has reached a certain level in his training. This idea is interesting, but you can see I am still alive. I believe the first time you hinted at the idea, I claimed I would not let go of it until I was in a grave." The bug type eyed her with malice, but remained still.
"It had been many years since you last used it." Bellum insisted. "I do no see the point in you having it."
"Ah, but how do I use it when I need it if I do not have it?" Antoine snapped. "Precisely why I have refused to give it to the boy."
Bellum was silent for several moments. “I see your point. But… Is there any way I would be permitted to at least borrow it. Let the young one take a look at it? Or maybe there is another one not too far from here?”
"I know of no other Heracronite stones," Antoine scoffed. "And borrowing mine… How can I be sure you will give it back?" He narrowed his eyes.
"Give me a time period. I will try to train Ralph with the stone in that time, and when it has passed, you may come and collect it." Bellum suggested.
"That is not an interesting offer to me. I require proof the lad is strong enough to even be in its vicinity." The Heracross looked lazily around, becoming less and less interested by the second as he had claimed.
"He is… Currently not here. I sent him on an errand the other day. But… He is hopefully not too far. Perhaps I can go and—" Bellum had started to get up but was stopped as Antoine raised a hand.
"I shall send Priscilla for him. She is the fastest. Just tell her where she is and she will be back in less than a few hours." He said, gesturing to a Leavanny that had just appeared.
"Very well." Bellum said stiffly, biting her lip.
"Ah, That’ll be 17,500 poké my dear Ralph! Your dojo sure buys a lot of training goods every month, Are these goods really that easy to break?" The Kecleon asked as Ralph took the poké out of his wallet.
"Let’s say we have some fanatic young ones Mr. Kecleon!" Ralph chuckled, rubbing the back of his head. He handed all of the money Lady Bellum had supplied him to the Kecleon, who began to count it.
“Oh, you’re 500 poké short Ralph!” Kecleon exclaimed, looking up. He counted again just to be sure, nodding when the amount remained the same.
"Oh! Lady Bellum must have miscounted… Here, I’ll cover it with my own—" Ralph was about to take out his wallet again when he was interrupted by Kecleon.
"Oh, no-no-no, my friend, it’s okay! You guys purchase so much each time you visit! It’s more than enough to support me and my business, plus you guys do so well protecting the area from miscreants! I’ll let the extra Poke slide. Think of it as a loyal customer discount."
"But, Mr. Kecleon, I can’t accept that! You spent your own money getting these goods! "
"It’s not like you and the dojo are my only customers, Ralph! Five hundred poké isn’t that big of a deal for me."
"Oh well, okay then. Thank you mr. Kecleon! That’s very nice of you!" Ralph chuckled, putting his wallet away. He picked up the bags in which the supplies were held and prepared to leave. "Well, I should head home again! It’s a long way to go! See ya next month, Mr. Kecleon!"
"Bye Ralph! Say hi to the rest of the dojo for me!" Kecleon cried as Ralph walked away.
"I will!" Ralph said while walking away waving goodbye.
"Ralph is such a nice boy…" Kecleon said softly to himself, dropping the wave once Ralph was out of sight. He momentarily dropped his smile and looked concerned. "I do hope he finds that note…" He mumbled, but suddenly smiled again as a new customer walked up, pushing away his worried thoughts.
"Phew, the supplies are heavier than usual." Ralph noted as he was walking through some woods. "I wonder what’s making it so heavy?" Ralph put down the bags and opened the heavier one, looking for anything out of the ordinary. He was surprised to find a large rock inside. On it was a paper tied firmly with a string. Untying the knot, he took the paper and began to read.
I’m sorry for making you carry that heavy rock, but I had no other choice.
I need to tell you something very important, but I’m being monitored, so I couldn’t tell you in town.
There’s a thieving club active in the forest and around the town. They’re known as ‘Team Aqua Robbers’. They attack at high speed with whirlpools and aqua jets. There’s no time to react before your goods gone—stolen. Be careful with the expensive goods you carry. They love valuable stuff, so you’re a potential target. Listen carefully to the sounds around you. You might hear them come with your young ears!
I hope you get through safe and read this in time!
Don’t worry about me, I’m stronger than I look! I’m sure they’ll back off if you manage to teach them a lesson, anyway.
With lots of hope that you’re doing well,
—Kecleon”
"What?!" Ralph suddenly looked around, surprised. "How didn’t I notice this? He acted so natural and calm!" Ralph walked over and sat on a fallen tree.
"I didn’t notice any ‘mon arou- Hey, this tree is wet!" Ralph said, standing up and turning around to look at the tree. "That’s not natural.. I think it’s been put down with force… with the use of.. water!" Ralph quickly looked around again for anyone else. "I need to get away from here, it’s too dangerous!"
Ralph put the note back in his bag and held the stone in his hands. He walked as quickly as he could for a long time, always looking around. After a few miles, he was panting, out of breath. “I need to rest a few minutes, I have no other choice.” He said to himself.
Ralph puts down his bags and sat on a nearby rock. “That poor Mr. Kecleon, I wish I could help him.. Wait! I actually can! I need to warn my friends so they can come along and beat that ‘Team Aqua Robbers!’ ‘Teach them a lesson’, like ‘he’ said! I really want to help him, he did so much for us. It’s time to do something in return! Thinking about how he could help Mr. Kecleon, Ralph got lost in his thoughts.
Suddenly, while he was thinking, a column of water struck Ralph from behind with little warning. There was a scampering sound, like a Pokemon has stumbled in front of him. Most likely the attack was Aqua Jet.
"Augh!" Ralph quickly jumps up avoiding a following Whirlpool attack. "Hey, this move combination! It must must be that Team!" Ralph thought quickly. In a moment of panic, he looked down where his bags were, only to find they were gone. "My bags!" Ralph screamed "Give it back! Those are mine!" Ralph quickly started to chase down the pokémon. But as he was chasing the first pokémon, he didn’t notice another sneaking up behind him. He was struck with another Aqua Jet, causing him to stumble and fall.
"Don’t dare to follow us again!" Ralph heard as another Pokemon scampered by to catch up with their companion. The voice itself was obviously feminine.
This is my chance! He thought. Ralph stood up and focused on the Pokemon running away, taking a breath and blowing some air. It turned pink and formed a heart—Attract, then struck the Pokemon. Immediately, the Pokemon turned, revealing herself to be a blue Pokemon with a dark headfin, orange stomach, and orange points sticking out of her cheeks. She wore a slight blush as she looked at Ralph, taking him in.
"It’s a Marshtomp!" Ralph had not expected a Pokemon like that at all. "I have no time for this." He thought, suddenly opening his wing case and flying past her, ignoring her exclamations. He had to catch up to the one with the supplies. Luckily, Ralph was faster in the air than he was on the ground, so it didn’t take him very long. He soon came across a fork in the forest path, but upon close inspection he realized one part was muddier than the other. Carefully following the tracks that the Pokemon left, Ralph continued his pursuit.
Unfortunately, as Ralph got closer to the Pokemon, it realized he was following it. Ninja stars flew at him, but they were made of water. Despite that, they were still sharp as metal and grazed Ralph. He endured the pain and prepared a Mega Horn. When he aimed for his target, he charged, striking the pokémon. The two of them both fell over, tumbling in the dirt. Ralph flew to lessen his momentum and hurried back over to the Pokemon, who was trying to regain the stolen supplies.
"A Greninja!" Ralph cried as he noticed what the Pokemon was. He suddenly realized a bag landed near him, so he quickly picked it up.
"Give me that bag." The Greninja demanded coldly. It glared at Ralph, making it clear she was serious. "Give it! Now! Or do I need to attack you again?"
Ralph noticed the Greninja also sounded feminine, like the Marshtomp. He attempted an Attract attack, but the pink air was scattered by another Water Shuriken. Ralph had never has seen such an attack before, so he didn’t know how to defend himself against it.
"Do that again and I’ll execute you right here!" The Greninja snapped, already in a fighting stance.
I don’t want to fight!” Ralph insisted, holding his hands up in surrender. “Please, go away and I won’t tell anyone about your existence and your partner marshtomp.” Ralph was pleading, but he was also trying to understand part of the Greninja’s motive.
At the mention of the Marshtomp, the Greninja panicked. “Where is she? You didn’t hurt her, did you! DID YOU? ANSWER ME!” She was really agitated, apparently because the Marshtomp was a sensitive spot for her. Ralph wasn’t sure why that was, but he answered her carefully.
"She’s just about a mile back, I infaunted her, but she’s okay. She’ll eventually snap out of it, don’t worry." Ralph said calmly. "You should leave me and check upon her, it’s no use fighting me, I’m far too strong, didn’t you get enough damage from that Mega Horn?" Ralph said, trying to convince her.
"How can I trust you? It can be a trap!" The Greninja looked around suspiciously, as if she was looking for people waiting for an ambush. When she found none, she turned back to Ralph, eyes narrowed.
"I never lie." Ralphs says "Go now, I won’t chase you down. Find your partner, hit the road, and flee! Go away from here! You won’t be safe here anymore!"
"Why would you say that? Why would you tell me what to do? I won’t accept this!" The Greninja, still suspicious of Ralph, began to fire a barrage of questions, a wild look in her eyes. Eventually, however, she took a few breaths and seemed to calm down.
"I.. I’ll decide to trust you this time! But the next time I encounter you, I’ll knock you out!" She insisted, spitting the words at him. She meant business. When she was done speaking, she jumped into the trees, leaving the other bag, and darted back in the direction she came from.
Ralph followed her movements with his eyes and when she was out of sight he finally relaxed. “Phew, glad that’s over!” Ralph said, walking over and checking the other bag. “And everything is still in here, too!” He closed the bag and stretched his wings. “Ah, they’re fine as well! You never know what water does with them!” He chuckled as he picked up the bags.
"Quite the feat there, young one." A voice called. Ralph turned around, suddenly gazing at a fellow bug pokémon. It was tall and yellow, with leaved draped all around its body. Ralph recognized it at once: A Leavanny.
"Who are you?" Ralph asked. "Are you also a part of Team Aqua Robbers?" His voice was tight, but serious.
The Leavanny gave a groan and shook her head, as if disgusted by the thought. “Certainly not! Such barbaric manners! At least I have a sense of dignity. If I were to steal, I would snatch something with my String Shot as you walked past, not barrel into you. But that is not why I am here. Lady Bellum has sent me to collect you for something important.”
"Lady Bellum? What? I never have seen you before, who says I can trust you?" Ralph scanned her, looking for any signs she may be hiding something like an attack. Her limbs were thin and long, but in sight. Her face was soft, gentle, but had a bit of a masked pride. Ralph knew this look well: Lady Bellum often carried it when she watched them train back at the Dojo.
"Lady Bellum assumed you would be suspicious…" The Leavanny murmured. She reached under one of her many leaves and pulled out what looked like a charm necklace. Something dangled from the end and shone as it hit the sunlight that managed to push through the trees. "This should prove I have been in contact with her, yes?"
Ralph looked at the object for a quick second, recognition suddenly hitting him. It was Lady Bellum’s key to a very important room in the dojo. It was from this room Bellum had retrieved the Water Stone to help Janet evolve. Who knew what other wonders lay hidden inside it?
"Th-that’s Lady Bellum’s!" Ralph exclaimed almost immediately. "So… I guess she did send you. Miss, uh.." He looked at the Leavanny expectantly, not sure if she said her name or not.
"Did I forget to introduce myself? I apologize." The Leavanny sighed, returning the item to its hiding place. "My name is Priscilla. I am among many that have taken Lady Bellum in as a guest, and you are now expected as well. Please, on the orders of Lady Bellum and Sir Antoine, follow me." She even picked up one of Ralph’s bags, an offer to help him carry them as they travelled.
"I’ve never heard of a ‘Sir Antoine…’" Ralph mumbled. "But lead the way." He said, ready to follow the Leavanny wherever she went.
