The Best of Times || askthekidfrombrooklyn

It was a good weekend to take a break from the embassy. T’Challa had seen many people, most of them delegates from other United Nations member countries or agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. And he now thought it was a good time to close the office down for a bit. As he was the only Wakandan delegate, and the only person who was ever present at the roof-top embassy, that was pretty easy to do. He simply did not go there. He did, however, ensure that there would be plenty of security to monitor the embassy. The transplanted tree which grew the heart-shaped herb needed to be watched, lest some unwitting thief attempted to steal its bounty and use it themselves. The herb was deadly to those not of Wakandan royal blood; he did not wish for anyone to fall prey to greedy desires.

No, today, he would take time to explore and appreciate this vast city. It was very different from the Wakandan capitol, and filled with a very different energy. He’d been here several times before, but experiencing New York whilst trying to defeat villains and save people was not the same as visiting a café in broad, peaceful daylight. It behooved the king to learn the layout and patterns of this city well; he might have need of such knowledge at any time. Unaccustomed to what he’d heard referred to as “plainclothes” before, T’Challa strode down the sidewalk and gazed all around him. He did not bear the attitude of a tourist oggling everything in sight. He watched with the acute eyes of a tactician, memorizing building shapes and placements, stoplights, crosswalks, anything and everything he should know if ever he needed to fight in this area. With how big New York was, he didn’t expect to memorize it any time soon. But little bits at a time would be sufficient. The undercover Panther paused at a street corner, observing the intersection and the people around him, becoming aware that there was a person not to far from him who was watching him rather closely.

It was another lapse in ‘things to do’.  It was amazing really, how you could live in New York City, and with the Avengers, no less, and still find yourself bored out of your mind on a regular basis.  Besides the fact that there seemed to be a lot of drama he didn’t particularly want to stick himself in the middle of, the team seemed divided for conversation at the moment.  And he didn’t want to be stuck in the awkward mess of that either.  So instead, he took a walk.  It wasn’t the most peaceful walk you could find, but Steve found himself preferring the busy noises of the streets, to a different kind of noisy park.  It also lead to his subtle habit of people watching.  It wasn’t anything of paranoia, or of ill-intent, instead something he had picked up a long, long, time ago when he went to art school.  He still liked to sketch, and draw, so picking up slight changes in body shapes, or positions was something he always could find useful.  Of course, he didn’t just walk around with a sketchbook.  Sometimes he would stop out at a café, maybe draw on the napkins they had, and more often than not, throw them out as he left. 

Steve continued idly walking the streets, without any set destination, which he found was always the best way to map out your surroundings, because you’re forced to figure out where you are.  As he walked, he did end up in a familiar area, with a familiar person not too far away.  At first, he wasn’t sure of who it was, but as he got closer it became more obvious.  The ‘modern’ clothes on the other, wasn’t something he’d been expecting, however.  Falling a bit lost in thought as he slowly made his way over to his friend, he made a small waving gesture.  “T’Challa?” He asked, before he came face-to-face, just on the off chance he had pegged the completely wrong person.  Seeing he was right, however, his smile brightened.  It had been a while since he last spoke with the other.  “How’ve you been?”

“Yes. It is one of the highest forms of honor in Asgard, and to die a warrior’s death almost assures your way into Valhalla.” He had no idea if Steve even knew what he was talking about, and he wasn’t sure what the Midgardian alternative to that was, so he tacked on a bit more so as not to end the conversation there. “But there are also fewer female warriors in Asgard. It is not something that is practiced there as openly as it is here. The Lady Sif worked hard to find a well-deserved standing among us.” In that way the people of Midgard seemed to be a bit more advanced. But it had never been a huge deal for anyone else besides Sif, so it made sense that it did not change. He followed Steve further throughout the zoo, less interested in these small animals, but still taking in all he could. “Are we searching for something specific?” He asked, noting that Steve appeared to have lost interest in the smaller creatures too.

He couldn’t say he was well-versed in Norse mythology, but he’s picked some up, after meeting Thor.  It really started playing too far into religion for him though, to compare, and he wasn’t the most devout man to feel like bringing it up.  “She’s the one that was in New Mexico with you?”  He remembered hearing about what happened there, shortly before he woke up.  SHIELD has still been fussing about it then, so he picked some information up.  “I heard there might be a panda bear around, I’ve never seen one.”  Since most things Asian were considered Anti-American back then. “They’re white bears, with large black spots, I think.”

That was a loaded question and she reacted to it physically without meaning to, her hands tightening on the steering wheel as she drove. Had he missed anything… oh boy had he ever, but she had to decide if it was her place to give him a heads up on everything or not. She decided to give him the cliff notes version in the end, “Uh… a few things.” Keep it simple, she reminded herself, “Loki and Stark are dating, Thor didn’t take it so well, so he’s bunking at my apartment that I still have… and I’m training two junior SHIELD Agents.” She tacked on the last bit if only to not say anymore on the whole situation with Thor and to think only a couple of months ago she was complaining about life being boring. Next time she was just going to keep her mouth shut.

“So, what was it anyways? Unless it’s one of those you can’t talk about it things.” She often got stuck with a lot of those herself, or her and Clint did together… Budapest being one of those hush hush things and she noticed how tight her hands had gotten on the steering wheel and quickly relaxed them her knuckles had been turning white. It was bad enough she had kind of dragged Bruce into it by telling him everything that had happened but she didn’t want to put Steve into it too. He didn’t need all of the drama, not the full effect at least or at least if he did get in it somehow it wouldn’t be because of her… though she had a funny feeling the Captain wouldn’t take sides at all and be more of the Switzerland party than she was.

Steve could tell that there was a lot he missed in the time he was gone.  If nothing but the tell-tale sign of the Widow physically reacting, something he noticed she only did when things were serious.  How serious, of course, would have to be evaluated when he got to the tower.  He gave a small nod, but didn’t say anything important in reply.  To be honest, he didn’t know what exactly to say to that.  He figured he’ll probably have to find out everyone’s sides of the story at least.  Maybe he’ll start with Thor, he seemed to understand him the best, most times.

On the topic change, he was a bit sidetracked in his answers.  Steve was both really interested in what had gone on since he left, but at the same time, was apprehensive about it all.  Seemed like everything the Avengers were involved with tended to head towards the extremes of things.  “It was mainly watch duty, and paperwork.  I felt like a security guard.”  He laughed a bit in earnest; it seemed like he did quite a few things he never imagined doing as ‘Captain America’.

The chance to get away from everything for a little bit was nice. She had jumped at the chance really what with a distraught Thunder God in her apartment and all the insanity at the tower. She really needed a mission, maybe one she could take Thor on as well to get him away from the situation as a whole, “Hey Steve.” She sat up in the driver’s seat and smiled sitting her phone aside and starting the car up, “I figured you’d get laid over with this weather.” All Thor’s doing, but she wasn’t going to mention that… it hadn’t rained this much in New York since who the hell knew when, though occasionally it would let up usually after she got the guy to focus on something else or when he slept.

Once he was settled, she pulled out and headed back towards the tower, taking her time as she was in no hurry to get back there, “So how was the mission?” SHIELD kept him more busy than they did her, it was a little unnerving but she understood the reasons why, Steve needed it, it was helping him get fully and completely adjusted to get out in the world more often.

Opening the front door, Steve threw his bags in the back, and sat in the front.   “Hey, ‘Tasha.  Seems like SHIELD doesn’t like postponing anything, if they can avoid it.”  He felt like he’s missed a lot in the time he’s been gone, and he’s hoping it hasn’t been too bad since then.  He was glad their casual conversations hadn’t been affected, at least.  “Anything happened since I’ve been gone?”  He asked the red head, relaxing slightly, while still keeping his posture upright.

“As fun as a secluded mission could be.”  He couldn’t lie, it was a pretty boring time.  It was work that had to be done, so it was, but he didn’t particularly enjoy it.  He did figure they stuck him with busy work for a reason.  Steve was still on the whole ‘culture shock’ watch, even if it weren’t so obvious.  Not so keen on learning everything it had to offer, and he did prefer the old ways, he felt like he figured out the new century well enough though.

Thor looked back at the strange creatures once more before taking the camera back from Steve. “Then let us not upset them. For I am most certain that these ones would cause much damage.” Laughing, he strode back over to pen for a closer look. They were pretty huge, and he was sure that they could do some damage if enraged. But he wasn’t going to start upsetting the animals in the middle of the zoo. Even if it did sound fun right now. “One day you all shall have to come and visit my home. Warriors such as yourselves would be held in high esteem.”

Steve nodded in agreement, “I’m pretty sure they would do a lot of damage.”  Although he was pretty sure elephants were fairly docile, despite their size.  “Are there many warriors in Asgard?”  He figured everyone was, to be honest.  They were easily comparable to Viking culture, of what he knew.  Steve began slowly walking down the beaten path again, onto whatever the next animals were.  After the elephants, and bears, and lions were seen, he wasn’t sure what else waited.  He really wanted to see a panda somewhere along the line.

For once Tony had chose to sleep in his own bed, wrapped comfortably in the Egyptian silk sheets. He was so comfortable in fact that he didn’t get out of bed until around 11PM. His sleeping patterns weren’t quite… Normal to say the least.

By then Thor had finished his morning cartoons, and Steve was most likely gone. He never really said where he was going, he’d just leave for a few hours then come back. That was of course when he wasn’t in his room. 

Maybe he should try and find Steve. It’s been a while since the two had a good conversation going.

Steve was a man who rose early, and slept late.  He felt like he’s had enough sleep in his life already, and to be honest, didn’t have need for it as much after the serum.  So by 11am?  He was past gone.  He didn’t particularly have a routine, but wasting time doing nothing around the tower, was definitely not something he generally liked taking part in.  It wasn’t as if many of the others were up by six, seven a.m. anyways.

So today was supposed to be when he decided to go try a new coffee blend.  It wasn’t the most exciting thing, but there were so many flavors he hadn’t heard of, it was at least a little adventure a day.  But apparently the one shop he found himself drawn to, was closed.  Steve sighed, as he continued walking through the city streets.  It wasn’t too cold, since it was nearing noon, but wasn’t the warmest time of the year either.  So he idly walked the streets back to the tower, hoping to run into a coffee shop along the way.

Another day, another psych evaluation and being told it was likely he would never regain full control of himself. It was wearing on him, to be honest, and he couldn’t help but wonder how much of a ticking time-bomb he really was, the longer things went. He was quiet as he headed down a corridor, deep in SHIELD headquarters. He only had clearance to go to his appointments and his arranged living quarters: something that amounted to little more than a cell. He knew it was all precautionary, but it didn’t make him feel any better about it or about his chances, staying locked away like that.

He was lost in thought, enough that he didn’t notice someone coming from the opposite direction.

It wasn't a well known fact, nor did he specifically ask to keep it a secret, that SHIELD occasionally had Steve in for 'therapy'.  Probably because they were still expecting a culture shock breakdown to happen, he figured.  Steve was used to not finding anyone there, as most quickly left the psych vicinity, or it were empty.  So it was to his complete surprise that he found Bucky there.

"Hey, Bucky."  He gave a short wave, although he had the feeling the other wasn't paying attention to the surroundings at the moment.

“I can tell.” He mumbled, nose still crinkled from the smell. “Most of them are yes. Or perhaps even larger. And a lot of them are aggressive.” He explained to Steve as he pulled out the camera and handed it over to him once again. “These ones appear to be fairly docile though.” He pointed out as he went to stand closer to the edge of the cage. He watched them momentarily, questioning their strange anatomy, before turning back to face Steve so he could take his photo.

“Most animals I’ve seen are, unless you make them mean.”  Steve said, as he snapped a quick picture or two.  He was a bit torn whether or not he really wanted to see very aggressive, apparently huge, animals.  It sounded like a nice memory to have, but also unnecessary danger to put yourself in.  If any of the others had a say in it, he was sure they’ll be going to Asgard any day now.
